He was on the mma hour before his specialist appointment and then let ariel know how it went. Cant remember exactly, but he wont need surgery but he has a scratch or bruise on the retina. Not great but sounds like he was extreamly lucky.

What faber did by basically slapping him with a claw should be punishable even after the fight. Not sure what he was thinking and you have to give him the benefit of the dout but it seemed dirty.

Yeah, I listened to that interview but not the whole podcast. I couldn't deal with Ariel whinging about anyone he could find who had a negative thing to say about CM Punk.

Rivera didn't sound particularly impressed with Faber, from memory essential suggested that it was probably deliberate didn't he?

This was interesting to listen to.

Funnily enough it goes into something I mentioned recently. I said that I can't understand why Northcutt is getting looked after better by the UFC than Gall. Wyman explained it well for me. Gall appeals to hardcore fans and people like Northcutt and VanZant really don't. He said that Northcutt and VanZant are being pushed to try and bring in a different audience, soccer mums is what he described them as. The big money to be made is outside the hardcore fanbase. I still really don't understand the appeal of Northcutt, but I'm not his target audience.

The description of VanZant being a normal person and Northcutt being very weird was spot on. VanZant's very awkward because she's a normal person that isn't great in interviews. Northcutt isn't great in interviews either, but he's so weird and that makes up for it.

Wyman said Gall is what hardcore fans like. He sort of compared him to the Diaz brothers. They're good to compare to Northcutt and VanZant. The Diaz brothers are good draws and the UFC are hoping for Northcutt and VanZant to be. They're polar opposites though. Northcutt and VanZant are completely manufactured and the Diaz brothers aren't at all. Nate's especially not manufactured because the UFC had no interest in him being a draw since he's not what they're after. In the end he forced their hand with a bit of luck by being opposite McGregor. Nick was built up in Strikeforce, but the UFC didn't like him and it was fans who forced the UFC to put him in big fights.

The Diaz brothers certainly aren't appealing to soccer mums:

I know the UFC rankings are basically a joke and you could find all sorts of stupid rankings if you wanted. This one really stood out though. The ranking panel saw that Rivera beat Faber. So they bump Rivera up 5 spots and Faber down 4 spots. Somehow they managed to keep the losing fighter one spot ahead of the winner lol.
 
Velasquez and Werdum could be on at 207.

I think I mentioned in the 203 thread I thought it was a chance, with Stipe wanting a longer break.

Sounds like Velasquez is in, not sure about Werdum yet.
 
Sonnen's signed a deal to fight with Bellator. Sounds like UFC agreed to release him from his contract.

I guess Bellator makes more sense for Chael at this stage of his career, plus there's minimal drug testing. Fights with Rampage, Tito, Bonnar and others would be marketable, plus they'll probably be able to finally do the Chael/Wanderlei fight at some point.

I'm not surprised that he has done that, and he will probably do some broadcasting in there too.
 
Yawn. I wish Sonnen got offered a role in the Trump campaign. It would be a perfect fit. That way the rest of America can get the Sonnen experience, and not just MMA fans.

Good for him if he's getting paid well by going to Bellator. Obviously he wasn't going to do much of anything in the UFC going forward. There are people who are always going to be smart enough to beat drug tests. Sonnen wasn't one.

Tickets up the back (cheapest I think) are $80.

Next best $100/150 (front rows of upper and back of lower)

Next is $250 which is corner bays on the lower section. And average seats on floor.

Next is $350 which is side section of lower. and slightly better on the floor.

Most of the decent tickets on the floor (first/second/third) rows look to be gone (550/650/750). Bit too expensive IMO.

Not the best explanation but hopefully gives a rough idea.

They'll justify it as boutique seating due to a more intimate venue.

The days of spending big on UFC events is over for me, I have done a few fly in the morning of the event and fly out in the same day evening for Sydney and GC (with expensive seats).
 
I was online for the newsletter presale this morning and didn't end up buying anything. I was really not happy with the pricing. There was no category that I really considered value for money with 1 fight announced.
 
Yeah I think I'll be missing this one too. Not risking it on one fight and a card full of meh aussie fighters. I mean happy to see Mathews and Robbie, but couldn't care less about people like Kelly.

Never heard of being ineligible for bonuses because of these sorts of reasons. I never thought about this being the case when someone didn't get a bonus and I thought they should have. Now there's something that could explain some of the UFC's decisions with bonuses. The bonus system is just something that distracts fighters from how little they earn anyway. It encourages fighters to perform well and they just might get a bonus if they perform better than everyone else on the night. A lot of them don't get paid much and realise that a bonus would make a huge difference for them.

Good for Iaquinta. He's got something else going on with his life right now and can make money doing that. That's the smart thing to do. If you can make money outside of fighting, it's the smartest decision to do that instead. More fighters thinking like this and they'd be better off. Too many think of themselves as 'real fighters' and seemingly don't care about the money they're making until late in their career.

There's also those who think I'll keep my mouth shut and keep winning. Eventually I'll make the big bucks. Iaquinta talks about that on the MMA Hour. He also talks about being able to decide not to fight. Some fighters have to fight to make money because it's all they've got.

I must say I find it hard to imagine Iaquinta selling real estate. I can imagine someone ending up deciding not to buy the house and him swearing about it. "You don't want to buy the house now? You better not be telling me that you don't want to buy the ******* house".

Saw someone post this fairly recently.



I mentioned something about Edmond being delusional after the UFC 203 altercation. A bit over 12 minutes in Edmond says he thinks he could beat Jose Aldo in MMA lol.

I'd never really paid any attention to Edmond's fighting career. Aparently he's competed in Muay Thai, boxing and MMA. I don't really have any idea how good he was, but it looks like he had the most success in Muay Thai.

I've seen stuff saying that Edmond and Rousey don't want her kicking in fights. I've never really understood that. She wants to pressure her opponents, clinch with them and take them down. A number of different kicks would be great weapons to help her close the distance. Edmond's Muay Thai background makes it all the more puzzling that kicking hasn't been a part of Rousey's game.

I've also recently seen that Edmond opened his own gym when he was 16. I think that helps explain why his coaching seems to be so bad. Opening your own gym at that young of an age is likely going to lead you to have issues that you're not made to address, as both a fighter and a coach.
