I see the V8 supercars are wanting the new contract to make the F1 gp a championship round, as I'm not an avid v8 follower... What's stopping then now? Is it the shorter races & lack of track time?
It's something about not having another championship, or premier domestic competition, being allowed to have a round at a GP round. This as opposed to a lesser competition, a "series", which is allowed to.

It's how you have a situation in the past where v8sc couldn't have a point s scoring round, but a lower "series" like Carrera Cup and fford have been allowed to.

It's actually about sponsorships and TV deals. Sponsor X pays X amount to be a sponsor at ALL V8 rounds. When you have a round where said sponsor advertising isn't allowed due to the international sponsors, they get shitty. Same goes for the Foxtel TV deal. They have their rights and sponsors and running them at the F1 makes half of those deals null and void. So, it's a pain in the ass.

Not sure what's ever stopped them really, but if they're there they may as well have for points

Bernie in the past has stopped them so it doesn't deflect away from the main event, similar situation with the Indycars at Surfers before their political power diminished. With Ross Brawn in charge of F1 now there might be opportunity to allow a proper round.

Edit: Also there used to be a TV rights issue.

For those with Foxtel they are currently showing the Nurburgring 24hr. 157 cars from several categories ranging from GT3 cars to Corollas.

Amazing viewing around an incredible track

3 people have died this year over there.

Heads up

Le Mans 24hrs starts at 11pm aest on Eurosport.
Nismo youtube always have something happening too.

Toyota broke the 32 year old lap record this week which is deadset bonkers when you consider the regulation changes over the years.
If any team ever deserved to win it it's Toyota after losing the race on tha last lap last year.

Also a 2 horse race with the japanese giant taking on Porsche now that Audi rage-quit.

( Gibbo voice )
So , fill the fridge full of piss and strap into that favorite armchair of yours , cos we've got motor racing coming out of our a-hole !!!
