I guess there are pros and cons with them all. Optus Cable and premium cable will give me better speeds and longer off-peak times. And I don't have or want a phone.

Haha, don't think I was trying to sway you or anything. Cable is great for stable speeds. If iiNet provided their quotas with Cable, I would be all over that.

I was on BigPond Cable  Loved knowing you were getting your theoretical line speed 24/7, instead of ADSL which depends on your exchange.

Just a question with speedtest.net and the pingtest.net

Here are my results for speedtest

and for pingtest

Do you guys get poor packet loss or is it just me? I have checked this multiple times for a couple of months now and I always seem to have an 88% packet loss. Are there any reasons as to why this is and how I could fix it? Also, with a packet loss like that, what is it likely to effect with my internet anyways?

Have you tried pinging another server to see if you get the same kind of packet loss?

run>cmd>ping 'website'

It could be a problem with the server, your setup (cables, router etc.) or network congestion.

Interesting, I tried that with pingtest.net, google, heraldsun, nba, espn and had a 0% packet loss. I tried it with the AFL site and got a 100% packet loss.

I did pingtest to both the Canberra and Sydney servers and both got 88% loss (same with one of the NZ ones).

For some reason I think it could be the modem we have since it is a very old model. It died once but since it is on a lifetime warranty we just got the exact same model back...

Anyways, What exactly is a poor packet loss going to affect when I am on the internet anyways?

Change your filters on your line. Reset your router etc. The other factor could be a faulty NIC in your PC, fault in the router or your copper out to the street is poor.

That much packet loss will slow your experience down a fair bit I would think.

I know I can still get download speeds of around 400-600kb which seems alright.

Once my holidays start it will give me something to investigate in at least.

Just for a laugh, here are my results on Optus Cable (speed throttled until Monday). 0% packet loss even on my shitty connection so 88% would be a concern. On Monday I'll be back to normal cable and by the end of the week, premium cable. Will post results for those too.

Even when i'm capped (256kb I get the same packet loss) I get that 88% packet loss. I find it weird that it is always at 88% as I would have assumed it would spike a bit and be better/worse at times not just a constant 88%.

What antivirus program do you use?

Would have thought my Ping would be lower going to the Sydney server.

Your results are far better than mine. Best line quality I can get is a D but it's usually F. Have tried numerous times to Canberra, Sydney, Tauranga and Palmerston North.

I've been fanatical this week about checking my internet speed. Started off good, then would get a little better and a little better, and I finally managed to hit 34 Mbps (see above). But I just smashed that and got 40. Should have my high speed modem tomorrow. Any chance I can hit 90?

Now I just need to sort out the crappy speed on my iPhone (Three Mobile ).

What is your ISP/Plan?

Is that NBN?

Surely has to be. Thought the fasest pre-NBN was BP Cable Extreme @ 30mbps
