Anyone ever had any luck cracking a name-brand blu-ray player?

Thinking of getting a new 3D Samsung BD-DVD player, but if I can't unlock the BD region code, then I won't buy it. I've cracked a few DVD players, easy enough, never tried a blu-ray though. What I've read is that if a blu-ray can be unlocked it needs a mod chip.

Guess I shouldn't have bought any blu-ray DVDs from Amazon :(

Otherwise maybe I get an Oppo BDP

Wondering if anyone could give me advice on some problems I'm having atm.

One of my computer's display screen automatically goes into sleep mode on bootup and nothing happens. It's not the screen as Ive tried my other screen and it still goes into sleep mode. I've also replaced the RAM and tried a new video card to no avail. I'm hoping its not the mainboard.

I'm running a MSI p45 neo mainboard and have a 9800 gtx+ video card.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Is the PC speaker plugged in? You'll usually get beep codes for major hardware faults. At a guess I'd say the motherboard is gone, maybe look over the board in case it's something obvious like bulging caps.

**** I hate IE with a passion, especially that piece of shit IE9.

Anyone got recommendations on turning the ridiculous security settings down? Comes pre-installed with 2008 R2 servers, together with the ridiculous popups on every single page about blocked content (so I turn that off), but I can't download files from microsoft.com.

What I tend to do is install a standalone copy of Chrome rather than do my head in with IE9. But if I have a vendor that needs to remote to a server and use IE, I'd like to get things working for them. So, what should I do?

Windows Server 2008 – How to switch off Internet Explorer Enhanced Security

Yeah, didn't want to just go from one extreme to the other. I ended up playing around with the Scripting section under Options. Bit by bit I got there. But I still hate IE9. I hate how it looks no matter what you do with the menus.

I finally get to put the good people here to the test.

I put together an AMD PhenomII 555 system in Sept 2010. On Sat night it turned up it's toes gradually. The first indication anything was wrong was the network activity icon vanishing. I couldn't get it back by any means so tried a restore which didn't work either. Tried repair and kept getting unspecified errors. Tried repair using the Win 7 disc with the same result. Tried in Safe Mode but couldn't access the option.
Eventually got a command prompt and got into safe mode but couldn't do anything there due to 'paging file too small' message.

I'm leaning towards a HDD failure rather than windows although it never made any strange noises.

Opinions?

To me it sounds more like a few missing system files which are causing the problems but it's hard to tell exactly. I'm guessing it's not possible to run/view any programs? There's a program called Crystal Disk Info which will give you a fair bit of info on your HDD but it will also tell you if you've got any sector errors. I personally think a format would fix it but you could be right. But with something like the network activity icon missing and then it getting worse, sounds like it could be a potential virus which is messing with your system files which is then causing your system to get worse.

There's a way to fix the paging file size (heard people do it before) although I haven't done it myself before so I'm not sure how.

Either way, you'll probably need a second hard drive if you plan to back up your files (unless you've got a portable hdd, in which case, you can copy over the files you want using task manager in safe mode if you're able to get that up?) and then trying a reformat and reinstalling windows to see whether it runs perfectly or not.

Assuming it's not a virus, I'd be leaning towards either a RAM/HDD fault, or a simple case of "you've installed too much shit on your PC, time for a rebuild" ;)

Grab something like Ultimate Boot CD and run a Disk check (maybe something like SMARTUDM too) and memtest to see if anything comes up. If it's just a pagefile thing you can modify the size by clicking on the start button, right clicking on "Computer" and going to Properties, click on "Advanced Computer Settings" on the left, click on "Settings..." in the "Performance" section, then going to the Advanced tab..... you'll find the "Virtual Memory" section at the bottom.

Hopefully it's just a case of it being time for a reinstall, you really need to blow away your OS every now and then and start over as all the installing/uninstalling/updating of random software tends to leave crap everywhere and eventually it gets to the point where things start breaking.

It's not due to being overful with either programs or rubbish. There are 5 partitions - 3 unused, 1 with 20% and 1 with 10% used.
I like to run it very lean. I'd be very surprised if it's a virus as it's well protected and regularly checked.

The only way to access anything is in safe mode and just opening My Computer exhausts the paging file. I reckon something important is stuffed.

So everything works fine in safe mode?

I can do nothing in safe mode due to 'paging file too small'. I'll see if it can be increased via cmd.

I ended up taking it to a computer repair place and it turned out to be a Windows 7 problem that couldn't be fixed, hence a reinstall was needed.

The only thing I can think of that may have caused the problem was an interrupted defrag.

My printer is being funny atm- it is starting to rpint a page (a document) and after a bit more than the header it jsut stops. If you press the power button it will spit the sheet of paper out but it will continue to flash until you pull the plug.
Also it did print other items but it printed them very scrunched up in the top left corner.

Does the printer status window give you any hints? Or is it just stuck at "Printing"? Try unplugging the printer, deleting the device from windows, updating the drivers (if possible), and reinstall it.

I am not using windows- The printer gives me the information that it can't get any information, as if it were unplug.
(I am using lubuntu 12.04)

Admittedly stupid question here. How come any time computers are used on TV or movies they always have very distinctive futuristic tones, sounds that you never get using computers yourself? Why is the portrayal or using computers so unrealistic? And how can I get my computer to sound way cool like on TV?

are you referring to things like, spitting out lines of text is accompanied by a sound? or keyboard pressing? do you have any examples? i'm thinking of some of the stuff on aliens movies which is admittedly sci-fi. aside from the fact that it just goes in the pile with other unrealistic sounding things (ie fights)
but, if they are using what appears to be specialized software - then it's not actually being unrealistic. the software could theoretically be written to perform those sounds and if we're not using it ourselves then we can't say that software 'sounds wrong' (that is some semantics i guess). it's probably just very boring to not hear anything while we watch it.

I remember someone writing a bit of software that made random "futuristic" computer sounds, but I had a quick look and couldn't find it. If you're after windows sounds I'm sure there are sound packs/themes you can download that will do the job.

hmmm looks like adobe have sent out a bogus update. constantly getting a message adobe 11.3 r300 is not working... just looking at their forums and they have heaps of people going on about it over the last past fortnight. anyone got it and got around it?? pain in the ass.

Speaking of unrealistic - when watching Terminator - if you pause the DVD when the source code is on the screen you will see that it is written in COBOL.

SAP's core code is still COBOL.

Hey guys.

Just a quick question which, after a squiz at the rest of the this thread, seems incredibly trivial.

I bought a Macbook today (yes I know the dark side) and for some unknown reason, Youtube videos won't work.

Any ideas? Cheers in advance.
