Hey all, been having a problem for a while on a Dell Laptop; this has happened with Kaspersky and Norton, when I try full scans, the computer fully locks up and stays locked about half way through the scan. Only way I can shut it off is by pulling the battery out. This happens EVERY time during a full scan, quick scans are fine. Have tried fixing registry with CC and defragging among other things, but no matter what I try it still happens. Am very curious as to the why and what can I do?

Try to log the scans to see if it's locking up on a particular file.

Yeah, the first few times it happened I noticed it would happen on one particular file, but after that it happened on another two different files. last time I tried it it was once more the file from the first few times. What do you suggest I do from here? Do I delete the files and then re-install them? What should I do if it keeps happening after I delete the files?

I'd be running some diagnostics over that disk (and possibly the RAM) to make sure it's not a hardware fault. If you hit F12 at start up you should come to a boot menu with some built in test software, your laptop possibly came with a CD with some stuff on it too..... if not, you can probably download it off the Dell site. If the tests come back clean it's probably best to just back everything up, blow the disk away and reinstall.

That.... or don't do full scans :)

Pretty much have done all of that; ran the diagnostics from boot menu and could find nothing wrong, then did a clean install of Vista and the same thing. Then upgraded to Win 7 and same thing. Got a feeling I will have to delete (and leave deleted) the suspect folder/files. The only thing is is that the suspect is from my printer, so won't have a printer to use if I uninstall.

Also, the same thing happened when I tried defragging; happened with both Defraggler and Windows Defrag.

Otherwise you are spot on, I only do quick scans now or whatever folders/files I feel the need to scan.

"From my printer"? You mean drivers/software? You can usually download that stuff from the manufacturer.

If it's happening during Defrag too try running "chkdsk <drive letter> /f" from a command prompt

Yeah, sorry about that, I meant to write from a printer folder, specifically the bin folder but not sure which exact file (it's been a while since I last attempted a full scan).

From the command prompt check, do I need to add that f? Or did you mean whichever letter my disk is under? Have tried chkdsk but not through command, will that make a difference if I run it through command prompt?

Cheers for the suggestions, will definitely try updating the drivers (again).

I'm trying to uninstall the Norton antivirus that came on my laptop when I bought it, and having an arse of a time.
While trying to delete the Symantec sharing folder, it says I need permission from the administrator. My user account is the only one on the laptop (apart from guest) and it says I am the administrator.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? It's shitting me a lot.

Also if anyone knows the best way to go about deleting all of the Norton files, that would be appreciated too.

Using Windows 7, btw.

Sorry if it's been asked already.

You need to download the Norton Removal tool; if not from the Norton website just google Norton Removal tool. That should uninstall it completely. Otherwise if you have CCleaner you can use that.

Don't know if it's been posted here, but lately I've been having some trouble watching videos (YouTube etc.) in Chrome - whenever it loads it's just a green screen. Audio is fine.
There's a temporary fix that I know about - right clicking vid and turning off Hardware acceleration.
Have had a look at Google but haven't been able to find a more permanent solution - anyone have any idea what could be causing it?
Windows 7, Chrome 20.0.1132.57 m, according to Flash I've got the latest version of that too. Haven't made any drastic changes to my setup lately either.
Cheers.

Hey guys,

At work we are running MYOB Retail Manager with a Docket Printer and a Cash Register connected to the com ports in the back of the computer, we just run that from the hard drive of the computer. It was running fine until the com ports have decided to itself. Now the Cash register and docket printer can't be picked up in the program because apparently com ports doesn't exist in the device manager in the "my computer" manage section. Anyone have any tips to get the ports back do I can install the drivers again? Thanks in advance

Just got a HP Touchpad with Android 4.04 pre installed - I connect to my home WiFi, but it says that there is No Internet Connection.. any ideas on what to do??

For quite a while, whenever I access certain pages on Firefox it freezes my whole laptop and I have to hold down the power button to restart it. Only happens with very few sites, but it means I cannot access them at all from Firefox.

Any suggestions of what to do?

I got an infection on my work computer this afternoon - something called Live Security Platinum. It's a fake anti-virus program that blocks access to your normal business applications saying they are infected, and directs you to a page where you can pay them money via your credit card to activate the full version of their software to 'solve" the problem. Obvious scam to get credit card details.

It has taken me a few hours so far to remove it... Reading up on it, sounds like it is spread through banner ads.

I was browsing Big Footy at the time it seemed to happen. Any one else have this problem?

We've had plenty of these pop up at work, and of course no one knows how it happens. Do yourself a favour and get it reinstalled, it will probably save you a lot of time and you're more likely to get it all.

Hey not sure if this is the place for it...but didnt think it was worth its own thread

Dropped Samsung Galaxy s2 in a mosh pit... needless to say screen is buggered (cracked, and doesnt show a picture at all)... however when i press on the screen it still vibrates, which makes me think maybe there is a chance for repair. Does anyone know how much this costs, if its worth it, if i have any hope of getting telstra to fix it for me (don't want to buy a new one whilst paying off the old one... as i have only had it for 5 months!)?

Other problem is i have been using it as a second camera while in europe, and have a few photos on there that i would like to retrieve, but am unable to access them due to phone being locked (the numbers pin lock). Any ideas on this?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

Got a problem with my ADSL2+ with iinet with Belkin (Bob) router.

Been hooked up for a year and a half with no problems. Now just recently It's starting dropping out. The Internet goes, then the sync goes, and the lights go red on the router. It comes back on and off again sporadically. I've tried power cycling a million times. Disconnected all my devices from the router. Changed the wifi channel. But still no love.

It'll work for a while then it start cutting in and out again. It did this same shit about two months ago but seemed to fix itself.

I live in a townhouse, inner city, so I'm assuming it's interference from neighbors etc. is there anything else I can try or should I just get iinet to check the line?

Don't suppose the photos were saving onto an SD card rather than the phone memory?

If you're not running ICS try installing this remotely and reboot your phone:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.curity.android.screenlockbypass&hl=en

This should kill the lock screen and you should be able to access your phone data through your USB cable.

PS: This suggestion is brought to you by the magic of Google Search, I don't know if it works. Oh... and I'm pretty sure S2 screens are expensive, probably not worth it if your phone got crunched pretty well.

Appreciate the help but 2 probably silly questions....
How do I install the app remotely when I can't access my phone?
What is ICS?

Note just did a Google search... I would guess I have ICS as phone is pretty new

Might have to just buy another phone... there goes a chunk of the tax refund.

Will see if telstra will fix it for free or cheap as a last resort lol realise the photos will get deleted anyways.
Thanks for your help mate... also fwiw I did look on Google before posting but with not much luck

ICS = Android 4.0.... you would have had to upgrade the software yourself to have it, those phone came with 2.3.x.

Assuming your phone is actually functional (other than the pooched screen) you could in theory push the software via http://play.google.com , but whether it would help depends on if you have a PIN on your sim card, etc.
