Ah cool! Thanks I'll see if I can suss that out next time.

I have wanted to see if I can update the firmware but they don't have wifi at home...

If you're got a relatively recent smartphone and a plan with plenty of spare mobile data you should be able to create a wifi hotspot and tether your TV to your phone.

yeah could be another good idea although vodafone are extortionate with data.

Probably easiest to just spend $50-100 and get a wireless modem if that was to fix that issue. Actually surprised they don't have wireless, must be a pretty old modem!

Gmail. Should be an easy setting but I can't see it, or it doesn't exist.

Inbox type - unread first. That's cool. But is there a setting to have unread first on my labels? After a while all the unread ones start to slip to later pages and it's hard to find them.

The settings button (cog symbol in the top right) > Settings > "Inbox" tab > set "Inbox Type" to "Unread First"

Yeah I've got that, but I want my labels and folders to be 'unread first' too. Ticking that box only effects the inbox.

Are there any tricks to getting a new laptop running faster? Cleared out the bloatware and ran CCleaner, still not as fast as I hoped it would be.

What's the clock speed and what are you hoping to do with it?
1.48ghz. All I wanted to do with it is browse on Chrome but it is painstakingly slow.

Assuming I've purchased a dud because I have no clue.

Assuming you can't use the licence to do a clean install off a standard Microsoft image....... add more RAM, upgrade to an SSD, or buy a better one :)

You'd be better off posting the model you bought, just posting the clockspeed really doesn't tell anyone much.

Just posted what d33my asked for.

HP-1000, AMD E1-1500 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.48 GHz, 3.6GB usable RAM, 64 bit. That's what I could find.

I only wanted something to browse bigfooty etc. on but this isn't getting the job done. Falls back to me not researching/bothering I assume.

I don't think the computer will be the problem. You can buy a $400 bargain and it would run chrome fine. What is your Internet connection like? Are you WiFi & ADSL? Or mobile broadband?

Don't think it's anything wrong with my internet, think I get around 30-40 down on WiFi. The previous laptop I used loaded stuff on Chrome pretty much instantaneously with the same connection.

Firstly, sorry for appearing in this thread every few months to ask stupid questions.

Secondly, I've had some luck delving into the power settings and telling it to perform rather than save battery. Slightly more usable now.

Those AMD chips are pretty bad, I have a similar one in my file server, it suits my purposes fine but it's not something I'd choose to use in a workstation. If you bump it up to 8GB and install the OS on an SSD you might be able to squeeze a bit more performance out of it, but it probably won't be much. A bit of research definitely would have helped, AMD in laptops is a no-no in general, but those CPUs are rubbish.

Yeah memory might be the go. If you're only browsing BigFooty.com then it shouldn't be a problem, bit if you have other stuff open too then it will suck your memory. Gmail looks innocent but seriously sucks your resources, and any site with a lot of multimedia advertising and fancy effects will do the same.

I suggest either making sure you have at least 8GB RAM, making ture you don't have too many tabs open, or trying a slimline browser like Opera.

Or if that's the only thing that you use it for, maybe get a tablet. Bigfooty opens fine on my Samsung galaxy tab, and you can take it to the dunny :)

Anyone not able to download clips on firefox?
Ant toolbar works for me if you're trying to download YouTube clips for example. There are some sites that let you put in the address of the video and it gives you a direct download link.

Edit: misread what you said, what exactly do you mean not able to?

I used to be able to go to YouTube and as soon as the clip started playing download helper on Firefox would indicate I can download it. For the past month or so nothing. I can only save pics. Thanks for replying

Had a quick look and it doesn't work for me, never realised it was possible with firefox, I've always used the add-in tool of ant toolbar as mentioned to download flash videos from sites such as youtube.
