Social Science Generation X

I would barter a 'millennial' from where I am probably has more in common with people of older generations from the cities than their own generation from the cities.

So many things go in to forming a person and a culture.

Generation wars are stupid.

Utterly moronic. Defining people by age is like any other discrimination... just laziness and ignorance.

Somehow this one is still accepted, even in the corporate world.

Here’s an idea - treat somebody like a ****in human being. Normally. Talk to them. Don’t assume negatives about them as individuals, let them reveal themselves.

Remember the biggest assumption about “Gen Y”? They’re lazy. It’s Herald Sun type stuff dreamt up by simpletons.

As soon as somebody starts going on about this crap, good sign you can switch off.

Lol yet its done to women all the time

Actually i take that back- older women arent defined at all. They just become useless, not worth men's or others time and invisible.

I'm a white male aged 18 to 49. Everyone listens to me, no matter how dumb my suggestions are.

Nah i disagree. At least the ones at my school- they're a pretty good lot (in general)

It was a bit of a joke and I don't really know many of the next generation - just what you see/hear in the media - they are all idiots.

My generation I dislike for the way a lot of them parent - or don't parent to be more precise. Raising a bunch of kids who don't get told off, can never do anything wrong and dont learn consequences. Boy its good when you see good parents (or what I call good parents anyway) and how well mannered and behaved their kids are.

I have heard some absolute horror stories re. parents. (remembering i dont deal directly with parents)

Its fun when our kids bring over friends for an afternoon and you know they are little shits - a quick word in their ear and they behave quite well :tearsofjoy:

Something along the lines of 'mate, you may get away with that kind of shit at home, but not here' with a bit of a look (these kids are about 8 or 9 so they're not going to ignore us......yet)

Good song too

Boomer men in my experience often had fraught relationships with their old men because of the war and them not staving off Nazis for the better part of their twenties like their dad did. Presumably ptsd must have played a big part too, my Grandad was at Belsen after it was liberated and I assume the brandy helped him unsee a few things.

Great post.

I think one of the best things about big footy and the online world in general is that the age barrier is somewhat lessened, it's easier to have a good conversation with someone significantly older or younger.

This can be harder to do IRL, but perhaps not as hard as we maker it for ourselves.

Xennials FTW.

Generational angst is interesting to analyse. It's pretty normal to want what you can't have. When you are 17 you want a decent car but you settle for an 1987 Ford Laser because that's what you can afford. If you are buying your first house you want something from Grand Designs but settle for a before house from Selling Houses Australia because that's what you can afford. Etc.

You can't expect to have what someone else has worked 20-30-40 years for, but, what can you reasonably expect in terms of opportunity? If the standard of living is declining per generation then the system isn't working.

Everyone wants to buy a million dollar home close to the city as their first house. My first house was a very modest 2x1 and cost 50k and was 20 kilometers from the city.

I think people would be more open to 'starter' houses like that if they cost $50k instead of $450k.
