i'm in a vid on youtube about gen y.

Bad Points:
-The use of the word random or randomness.
-Many are self obsessed (may just be because we're young though)
-Want everything without doing work
-Selfish

Good Points:
-Many have very good manners
-Least racist/sexist of all generations
-More open minded than other generations

The youtube channel XmLmX has a few movies.

This whole idea that a generation of humans who come from different cultures and backgrounds have the same character traits is a load of old cobblers!!!!

Well that is hard lions.

I would say we have a little more knowledge about the world when it comes to...

Marijuana.
War.
Technology.
Race.
Womens rights, ect;

If you look back, most youth from the 50's to the 80's were so, stupid? - most of the issues today deprive from generations before Gen Y, and we're gonna have to end up fixing them, no doubt.

Wars in the 90's were horrific, and who started them? - people with the mentality pre-Gen Y.

I would think by the time Gen Y escapes the "youth" stage, we will be a lot more mature & knowledgable when it comes to issues facing the world today.

That's just my 2 cents.

I don''t believe that you've thought about what you posted properly. Gen Y know more about war than teenagers from the 50's? What about the Vietnam war?
Gen Y know more about womens rights than teeneagers from the 70s and 80s?
Gen Y know more about Marijuana than people growing up in the 60s?
What about the people from the 50s-90s that fought apartheid and other rascist regimes around the world?
Take your 2 cents back.

Read my post again.

However, what I meant was, young adults from the 50's & 60's seemed to have been less "knowledgeable".. And what I mean by knowledgeable is, they we're less cautious about the consequences of such acts & issues whereas the young adults of Gen-Y are more likely to learn from these mistakes & take the consequences into accounts & prevent these things from happening again.

Also, youth today aren't so blind when it comes to Marijuana. If you ask a middle-aged, or older person why "Marijuana is illegal", they will simply reply with "Because it's a drug". Whereas a young adult today is more in touch with society & understands why Marijuana is illegal & is more knowledgeable about its side effects & consequences to judge whether or not it should be socially accepted or not.

Racial issues are more likely to be different in the Gen-Y world.

Technology wise, Generation Y is more adaptive and it isn't farfetched to assume they will be the Generation who enables technology to take off & understand how important it is to our lifestyle. It is the internet itself that has given us Gen-Y'ers a wide range of info, and more people are likely to talk serious issues through over the web than in person. More understanding results from this. Ect; ect; ect; I could go on.

To put it bluntly, I expect to hear the idea of a "World War III" from a Gen-x'er or a Baby boomer, before I hear it from a Gen-Y'er. If Generation Y distances itself from previous generations, I'm almost certain World War III will never happen.

This of course is my take on this thread, and the generation itself. My 2 cents. You may disagree, but that doesn't mean I'll take it back. You just need to accept the fact that I may have a different viewpoint than yours.

I take it you're from a generation prior to Gen-Y. Seeing as you have yet to learn that the Internet is far from the place you should be discussing your ideals if you are easily offended, and the last place you should order someone to do something you want them to do. Pro-tip: It'll only make people do the total opposite. :thumbsu:

Who would have thought Sociology would pay off.

No, I am a Gen Y'er (I think). You shouldn't make silly assumptions.
I was not offended, I said I didn't think you'd thought it through, and frankly still don't.

Being a fellow Gen-Y'er It is true about the drugs that we know a bit more about drugs and consequences than past generations. Also knowing a bit more about the consequences that a nuclear war also supports that we may not see a WW3, i truly hope noone does for generations to come.

We have a wider range of information than Gen X and BB. Because the subjects adressed in the post above are more talked about. The more we talk about these things the more unlikely they are to happen or get worse.

Racism is getting better so I have heard from my elders. So In my opinion Gen Y is more aware of things than some other generations about specific things.

BTW, well posted CMC.

This (and your previous couple of posts) were meant to be ironic and point out the primary flaw in Gen Y weren't they??... which is, even more ironically, the same flaw of every previous "young" generation .... i.e. we know more and we won't make the mistakes of the past. But irony was your intent, surely?

If you meant it as "truth" then you are an insulated fool who needs to grow up. You also won't like my post, because political correctness has created the first genuinely soft generation who deal very very poorly with direct criticism. :p

And everyone, feel free to bring in Gen Y dances and music into this thread to make it a good one. But make sure it has come from Gen Y (1980-1997).

I don't think I get what you mean exactly.

No, my posts were not meant to be ironic. I think you misunderstood what I said & should probably read again.

What you are talking about is normal youth behavior. All young people will act as if they "know more" & make mistakes. However, the Generation Y I was talking about is those who finally become adults themselves. When Gen-Y'ers start to mature & become adults with children of their own they will have grown up in a forerunner to the society they live in. Thus issues will change with them, but more so issues we face today will be widely understood.

I believe everything I said has been well backed up with proper reasoning. If you look at WWI & WWII as well as the Vietnam War, these did not have a significant era between them.

The mentality of "War" that a Gen X'er has is almost no different to the Baby Boomer counter-part. Why?... well to put it bluntly, Gen-X'ers grew up in a world riddled by the Cold War (1962-1985). The lifestyle back then struggled to find it's own identity, which took a toll on education, the knowledge of society values & the understanding of race, culture & religion.

Gen-Y'ers on the other hand have probably spent most of their time living in a new-age, with technological advances allowing them to understand the mistakes of the past & values today without the elephant in the room.

If you meant it as "truth" then you are an insulated fool who needs to grow up. You also won't like my post, because political correctness has created the first genuinely soft generation who deal very very poorly with direct criticism.

Instead of calling me an insulated fool & telling me to grow up, why didn't you voice your opinion instead?

Whether I like or dislike your post, or whether I think you calling me an insulated fool with no reason provided is a cowards way out, it doesn't matter. You have your 2 cents & I have mine.

As for you calling Generation Y the 'softest' generation who deals very poorly with direct criticism, I beg to differ. You see, while some Gen-Y'ers may not bode well with such circumstances I can tell you this...

I have never seen a Word War in my lifetime. Nor have I ever seen a war started by Generation Y. To put it bluntly, I feel as if Generation Y has grown up already, and use BB/Gen-X mistakes from the past to mold a way of dealing with mistakes/issues today.

Technology, such as the internet, would be something Baby Boomers & Generation X'ers would have loved to have while growing up, because not only would they have been granted access to a wide range of information untainted by "Mum's" or "Dad's" viewpoints, they would have also been able to discuss things not usually spoken in person.

Over the long, yet short history we have as Humans, you only need to look at it to see the change in social norms that have accumulated along the way.

It could be argued we dont have the capacity to start wars anymore though.

I mean, everybody knows that the moment you start a war the world is screwed because everybody has everybody else's balls threatened with nuclear bombs. I know there was the obvious nuclear threat during the Cold War era, but now EVERYBODY has them, and bucketloads at that rate.

But I think your right as well. The issues re: Gen Y are blown out of proportion these days because the media is so invasive, and silly little things like this make the news. It gives me the shits because of all the crap that my relatives tell about the stuff they got up to when they were "my" age and then they have the gall to criticize us for doing stuff that isnt even as bad. :thumbsu:
