There's no one forcing him out, but maybe sometimes you force the hand. Cripps is limited and has been disappointing, if we had balls we'd get rid of him.
I think he benefits from being a lone hand in defensive forward pressure. The coaches know that's a problem and he's the most likely to put in defensively. He's decently fast as well without being a rocket.

But he is the perfect example of what’s wrong with our team. It’s full of one dimensional players.

He’s a defensive forward who can’t really create or generate any offense. He’s not a marking or crumbing forward and he’s not a good or creative kick at goal. At his best he can harass and chase but how about we try and get guys who are natural forwards and can play defensively?

Or mids who are just mids? Instead of given them a free pass from being unable to tackle or kick or run or mark because “that’s not their job”.

Our team has evolved from the MM era of “18 ruck rovers” who could all “play anywhere” per Leigh Matthews at the time to 16 players who can only play in one position (and often with caveats attached to that position I.e he’s a mid, but he’s outside, so contests aren’t really his role) + McGovern and Yeo.

I know football evolves but the reality is our team of 20+ years ago was more suited to modern footy than our current one.

Our forwards other than Sumich could all run through the middle and most were highly competent in there and our backline players were all either converted mids or converted forwards (except Brennan).

In an era of run, run, run and “no position football” we can’t run and we’ve got more single position players than ever.

How doesn’t that reflect poorly on the coach who has been there 4 full seasons?

good summary and historic context.

How did we get to where we are? Woodhouse was the start I guess. What influence did Woosha have on the misguided direction?

You can't lay any blame on Woosha imo, it's 4 years down the track, need to start laying the blame at the current coaches/list managements feet.
O'Brien is largely at fault for our current drafting issues.

It's a shocking midfield - Redden may be one of our main guys in the middle next year and that makes me nervous even with the improvement he's shown.

We are streets behind in the middle.
As a fan, I am asking myself the quesions:
1. Where have the local talent midfielders gone?
2. Are they too high a draft pick that we could not affort at the time?
3. Can we get them back next year?
4. In the future , can we build and develop a pool of good loyal WA young footballer that want to play for the "West" Coast Eagles and minmize the loss of local talent. I think we have drafted 2 East Perth players with good skill last year but yet to develop into the "elite" class.

It was a question - but our list was build during his era to a great extent. Our current drafting seems more focused with Venables the best example

I know it was a question, that's why I answered it.....
The problem for me in laying the blame at Worsfold's feet is that 4 years down the track most teams would have replaced a fair chunk of their best 22 side, but because we haven't developed/drafted/played the young guys properly we're still trotting out a lot of the same guys that were here then. That's not on Worsfold, that's on our current coaches and list management team.

If you were a midfielder in the draft, can't imagine WC being a particularly attractive proposition, unless you enjoy East Perth colours?

MUFC.
I would talk to West Coast if I was a midfielder. I would just make sure I brought in a bank statement that showed some credit and my last cricket match scorecard (or photo of the scoreboard) to show runs...simple as that.
..but you dont want to go too far either.

AMEN to this!! great post. Did you watch the Adelaide v Sydney game.. I felt physically scared for our blokes - especially the midfielders. Not because our guys are scared or not brave. But the bodies on those guys out there are a level above us in muscle power. Like we used to be. Braun, Banfield, Cousins, Chick.. Mckenna.. Woosha himself. Compared to our blokes now. Masten, Gaff, Priddis, Hutchings. Geeze.. yeah sure you need to run a hell of a lot more now and be fast. But our blokes are small and they can't even do that!! If you're gonna be small and be slow, least get some muscle on. Or learn to kick non preferred. .. SOMETHING extra !! anything!! But no, as you say our blokes each (especially those mentioned) bring one, or barely two footy attributes to the table. And non of their attributes complement each other either!

I think we all agree that drafting isn't an exact science, In reality a lot of draft picks never end up playing a single game. We fall into the habit of drafting a kid who lit up a game or two in the national championships and anoint him as the saviour. There are kids and mature age players all over the country that are paying well in state leagues who never get a shot.
obviously ability goes a long way but individual commitment and mental strength are sometimes overlooked. Decision making under pressure is the one thing that can ruin a players career.

What I want to know is how for the love of god we ended up with a full north east coast docker coaching staff? They clearly aren't really invested in the club or WA footy and boy does it show. Drive them to the border I reckon. Time for the Sumich and Micale led recovery with the cream of our u18's leading the charge!!

I really do like the idea of Suma back at the club and identifying all of the talented WA. Kids that we can take with late picks. He will only get back onto AFL for a senior gig though.

Cox, Selwood, Nicoski, Graham ... yeah we don't have enough ex-Eagles in there. Can't trust outsiders to invest in the club, we've never won anything with a Victorian coach.
