WAAFL seems to have the same, but is it included in your subs or do you have to arrange it yourself?
If they are anything like us then no you don't have to arrange it yourself. The club pays a set amount depending on it's size along with the yearly association registration fees and as a playing member you are automatically covered playing in a match and indeed driving to and from it.

But it's not like having insurance cover is an open cheque book for him though.

Obviously, we all hope that he makes a full recovery, however, if he doesn't he will need ongoing care and rehabilitation. Insurance companies will cover a generous proportion of this and , in time, he may receive a substantial payout to tide him through life.

Sadly though, many people are forced into the courts to gain benefits befitting what they will face for the rest of their lives.

Insurance companies are soulless, heartless kharnts of things who only care about their bottom line.

In the short term, at least, he needs all the financial support that he can get.
Agreed on the insurance companies.

It's going to sound heartless, I know, but there are so many different groups and individuals clamouring for donations that I like to consider all the circumstances, including what actions have been taken by the potential recipient to assist their own situation, before I commit my money anywhere.

It's not heartless in this day and age, it's prudent.

However, in this case, this guy really couldn't have expected this or done anything to prevent it from happening. Unless he was Bryce Gibbs.

I think there is also room for some enterprising brokering in this area or collaboration between club, associations and possibly codes although this is probably too problematic.Every kid and their parents participating in Aussie sport is covered by some form of insurance.Even if you're down the local oval playing kick to kick and you bust an ankle on a sprinkler head your shire will either have public liability or a slush fund for such things.
My point is with every single participant in junior athletics, netball etc covered the premiums the insurance companies are raking in nation wide are monumental. The pharking Minister for Sport and Recreation should be meeting with the CEO's of all the codes and associations and the Insurers and saying you're copping $5m nationally in premiums and the figures show you're paying out $47.50 on average annually....I do know that if medicare can cover it the insurer won't touch it
To my mind the bargaining leverage is certainly there and if the Aussie based insurers won't come to the party go elsewhere ..I dunno the answer but it's a massive business and the Aussie sportsperson who is the end user gets a bloody average deal.

What's the story re insurance in the WAAFL?

From memory it's a basic coverage. Bronze level with JLT, which covers half non-medicare costs and up to a 500k lump sum for major injury. Clubs are required to inform players at the start of the season about the insurance coverage, and players are strongly urged to take out their own private heath care as well as personal income protection.

So, if the unthinkable happens, he is in dire need :(

Can be difficult to get cover whilst playing (most) contact sports or there are exclusions whilst playing/training.

Essentially out president has said, it would drive up fees if they put insurance in and we'd be best of going with our own insurance since we'd get better deals.

yes, there's a million causes we could donate to, but this guy was injured doing something all of us here love. We all recognise this could have been one of us, our kids or a loved one.

I think it's more than money - it's showing him that people care

Great post - it's a community.

If it's anything like the rugby coverage for amateurs, it's worth approximately 2/5 of f-all. More symbolic than anything.

Is that done through LCIS? http://www.localcommunityinsurance.com.au/

I invested a fair bit of time putting pressure on to have something set up specifically to provide affordable insurance cover for community organisations. I'd hate to find out that it's not doing its job.

It's been a while since I looked at it, but a couple of years ago amateur rugby insurance coverage was centrally organised by the ARU through a broker, not LCIS. As a serial club/organisation volunteer, that LCIS looks like a good idea!

Correct, the WAAFL provide clubs with Bronze level JLT insurance as part of the nomination fees for teams. Bronze cover is worth bugger all. My club made the decision 2 years ago to pay the extra few grand each year to upgrade to gold level after a few of our guys were well out of pocket even after medicare, private health and the bronze JLT. We (as all clubs I'd imagine) strongly encourage private health insurance (its amazing how many young blokes don't even have low level cover) and income protection.

Wish Damo all the best with his recovery. Hits home given most of us take it for granted being able to pull the boots on each week without even the slightest consideration of something like this.
