ok so Ling was not captain or he was .. it doesnt matter.. the argument is we have turned Juddy into him or a Kirk.. under Ratts... and thats the argument....

Juddy was a different player at WC....

.... now he is a dour player.

alot of his brilliance has been curtailed by the guy who calls him "The champ"... cos that guy relies on Judd and before that Fev and Judd for the whole of his gameplan. Recently we have sen his gameplan diminish.. without Fev and the Judd suspension...
.... he used Judd so much in every role.. that Judd is no longer the same footballer he was ... nowadays hes blue collar...

And if Ratts got his hands on Ablett.. im guessing id be lookibg at the next Stevie Baker.....

Everyone is eithe rplaying defensive roles.. or unnacountable roles.
in a gameplan that is a mongrel gameplan.. abit of this and abit of thsat but really ineffective.

Hird shouldnt be a coach without going through a process...

I don't want to involve myself in the argument that is going on in this thread but I would like to post a criticism of Ratten's coaching.

My view is that the way he is coaching this side is reminiscent of Grant Thomas at the Saints and Connoly at Freo. There are no obvious foundations being placed down for a gameplan that is going to take us towards a premiership. When Ross Lyon arrived at St Kilda he was criticised by every man and his dog for trying to implement a gameplan that appeared to not suit the Saint's personel but it was a gameplan nonetheless (which they stuck to every week) and over time they became so good at his style they are where they are now. During their transition period had he of elected to revert back to an attacking style of play they could have won more games than they did in that period but in the long run they were better off. This is a major issue I see in using win/loss improvements to judge Ratten as a coach - how much of that was due to natural improvement of our playing list opposed to his coaching?

I don't think Ratten has necessarily done a terrible job developing some of our players and should be commended for what he has done with Jordan Russell, but I'd like to see us have a coach with more of a vision towards the future (this doesn't mean just playing kids). I don't want to see our gameplan change by the week based on the opposition because this isn't going to take us anywhere, we need to be the team that forces others to counter our own tactics (it's not like we don't have the players). If Ratten picked a gamestyle he wants to see us play week in week out and we stuck to it every week for the rest of the year I wouldn't be so critical and could maybe even see a future for him at the club. But somehow I doubt it given the past few years.

Good comments there...

Ratts has done a fantastic job of lifting us up from the train wreck we were at the end of the Pagan era and we all through great.

However, he seems to be as one dimensional in certain areas of his thinking as Pagan was and doesnt seem to be able to react quickly enough to changes.

A good tactician should be able to sit down and work out a basic battle plan and alternatives to the battle plan for the time during the contest. If opposition player B is doing something while opposition player A is doing something else... there should be anticipated responses to those moves. But they just dont seem to be there with Ratts.

There should have been a plan for a situation where one of our guys goes down hurt (McLean) and who would move onto his direct opponent instead of just sending out the guy who was on the interchange bench when the injured player comes off going straight onto that opponent because the replacement might not have the same skill sets as the injured player.

Ratts is the full time coach, he should be spending a considerable amount of time reviewing the next opponents tapes from the previous (n) weeks as well as any tapes we have for our previous matches against the opponent. He should be looking for anything that looks like a set planned piece in certain situations and work up a game plan for how to counter that move.

Much as I love Ratts and what he has done for the club and I would love to see him turn it around over the next 19 weeks and get us into the finals again or at least get us close to the 8... he just seems flat when it comes to match day.

Ling is not a premiership captain, never was.

To say that Judd is a tagger makes you seem like even more of a moron.

Think before you post. You are in danger of being overtaken by spudchamber in terms of posting quality.

and that he didnt tell the players to kick it over the fence... but if he did.. and they did.. maybe thats the only instruction he hands out and they abide by.....

No he can't, but he can get his matchups right, and develop a way that we can beat Essendon. Everyone knows Essendon play a run at all costs gamestyle, and play on at every opportunity. Again on Saturday night we couldn't combat that, and even at quater time when we lead by 3 points, I was almost convinced we would lose.
 
THS had the same issue on another site.....there is a distinciton between having a game plan, and having the blokes executing it, for whatever reason we are not executing it at the moment.........it isn't that black and white, and there may be some blurring of issues, but the great spin doctor only incudes the arguments that suit his stance.

TheGreatOmmitter might be more appropriate than THS. ;P

The fact is we are commiting far too many basic DM errors and careless execution of skills.

As for Judd, he had a few more in and under types to distribute the load at WC. Pretty sure THS was all over recruiting a bloke to take more of the inside load..and the club did, but he seems to conveniently omit this fact to suit his anti-Ratts stance.

I don't think the game plan is the issue. I don't think the club is getting the most out of the players ability....part of which could be injuries and having to play blokes out of position.....no Bower, no Judd has had some flow on effects for probably 5-6 players, we may not yet have the depth and experience in the depth to replace like with AFL-ready like....the other part I'm not sure why.

I'd like to see the back 6 structured up as such:

Joseph -- Jamison -- White
Russell -- Waite -- Bower

A good mix of pace, height, strength and rebound.

freeing up Scotland and McLean to carry the inside load and Judd, Gibbs and Murph spending more time as our key outside users. That will sart to put the onus and pressure on opposition coaches to lock us down as opposed to the other way around. Move Walker to a high half forward or as a bigger bodied run-with where we can uses his tank and he doesn't need to kick hard left footers penned in deep in the back pocket :o
 
Alot of Essendon supporters were saying the exact same thing last week.. get Hird.

General opinion was that he is focused on his business and has no time for coaching.
 
Not a fan of Thornton?

Obviously still a ways off due to injury but I'd love to see Austin given a real shot of it once he's got a few games under his belt at VFL level. Think he's our best prospect for CHB.

Waite I'd play as a loose man down back with the liberty to do whatever the hell he likes. Provides great dash and is a good reader of the play. Bower on the third tall and Jamison at full back.

Thornton plays his best footy on the medium talls so that's where I'd play him. White I wouldn't have in at this stage when the other four are fit.

I'm not on the Sack Ratts bandwagon, I'm not panicking after one bad performance.

However Hird looks like a perfect fit for a senior coach and would love him at the club
 
In analysing the season thus far.
1. Played all over Richmond could have won by 100 points but took the foot off the gas. Richmond are a pathetic rabble
2. Played all over Brisbane who now incidentally have been proclaimed flag prospects. We won that game all over the field except for kicking the ball through the goals and the Jono Brown factor. This game was played two states away and without one of our key defenders in Bower.
3. Got smashed by Essendon who of late seem to have our measure. Hopefully by rd 19 we can break the hoodoo. Bar one or two, every player did not seem to put up a fight or even go close to 80%. Why this always happens against Essendon is a mystery. Leg speed is always blamed, however we are no slouches on foot in other games.

Conclusion (IMO): Too early in the season to tar and feather the coach. We should have beaten Brisbane, Ratts would have been praised if we did.
Forget the Essendon game, they are our bogey team. We will fix that in due course. See what Ratts can do when our backs are to the wall over the next 6 weeks. By rights we shouldnt win any of those games, but if he can swing 3-4 wins then he has done more than expected. If we are 1-8 after that then this thread may be more appropriate.
Till that happens, can we give the bloke a little support.:thumbsu:
 
Hird as coach, Lloyd as full-forward, can we interest you in a Kevin Sheedy to complete the set? A slightly used Aaron Hennemann at chb?? What about a nice, conveniently un-contracted Mark Bolton??? Pretty sure Gary Moorcroft's tearing it up still.....??? ;) ;) It'd only be fair after we took Murphy, Allen and Campo's hamstrings off your hands.

But seriously.
I don't think Hird's interested in coaching...yet. I really doubt he'd be interested in coaching anyone else.

1 rivalry game is not the end of the world.

I think he struggles when he has to play on taller opponents, as has been the case with Bower out but is very solid when on a suitable match up. Another who's good at peeling off and helping out his fellow defenders.
 
I think the same of White, but I think he may have a more even temperament and a bit more hunger.
 
Think Hird is exactly the type of person we need at Carlton. Not necessarily as head coach or to replace Ratts. However having him in some capacity would add a composure and integrity that is sadly in the minority at our club.
