Gee, it's been a long wait, but I'm glad I've saved my tickets! :D

Great to see Stiffy lining up. Hopefully it wasn't too cold out there, eh Stiff? ;)

I've had my ticket for 2 years.... ;)

I seriously think the plusses.....pace, long kick, evasiveness...outway the minusses....

great game Marty

Can't say the same here. I've only been aboard since the pre-season games.

But the ride has been damn good in the last 3 weeks!!

As crow-mosone so thoughtfully and insightfully said - "Choo choo!!" :D

Mattner struck me over the last year or so as a player that fades in and out of games ; and that didnt really impress me a great deal, but this year he seems to be developing quickly and today was seriously impressive , lets hope he can keep it up. Amazing the difference in a coach can make to some players.

Great to see Mattner playing so well (and receiving so much faith).
I wasn't even a member back when this thread started, but I'd like to point out that I've been a Mattner fan for some time. :D ;)

I think I can safely delete Marty's name from my "2005 needs to improve or delist" list. His last three weeks has been terrific. Let's hope some more "iffy" players stand up.

It's amazing what the youngsters can do when given a good go.

I am on board.

The amount of pressure this guy puts on players. I liked him from day one. Just felt he didn't get a fair go. It is a credit to Neil Craig that he has stuck by a player like Marty. I think his general akills have improved immensly this year. He always had that great ability to stick a tacklebut his kicking and compusre when he has the footy have improved immensly. His body language when chasing down players is very intimidating. Keep it up Marty

I will do that when he proves me wrong. 2 good games in a row do not make a player. Come to me when he has played 30-40 games and we'll talk.

I am happy to be proven wrong in the long run. Yes there is an upside to Mattner but he better get a move on.

BTW, why the hell are you calling other people names just because they disagree with you?????? Do you get some enjoyment from calling people cretins just because they don't agree with you??????

16,856 posts doesnt make you any more qualified that anyone else to give an opinion on a player - and it would appear that in this case - you are wholly unprepared to rescind on your previous mattner bashings, which up to a point in time, were genuninely warranted.

his performances during the pre season and the first 3 games of the year suggest that mattner is currently, very comfortablly, in our starting 18, and is well ahead of several other players - both younger and older on our list. he finished off last year reasonably well too.

i think it is fair to say that he is now a pretty good player - not a fringe player, nor a mediocre player making up the numbers.

he was probably in our best 3 yesterday. if you are waiting for him to win a brownlow medal before you call him a good player, then that is a little harsh, and also a convenient way of avoiding an inevitable admission on your own part - you were wrong. :D

I must have missed the part where Stiffy said his post count made his opinion worth more than the vast majority on these boards.

Secondly, have you ever heard of the cliche "one swallow does not a summer make"? Personally I've been very impressed with Mattner so far this year, and on the strength of his form and the way he's gone about it recently, I'm almost convinced he'll be a very good player for us in the long term, with the potential to play 200 games or more.

BUT...

I can see where Stiffy was/is coming from - just remembering these comments were made a year ago if you check the timestamp. Just like with my stance on Reilly, he'd prefer to see a good season or two of consistent football before being convinced of the player's truth worth and role in the side. Between now and the end of August both players will go on to play some good games, some bad games, and some mediocre games. The key will be for them to reach a level of consistency which sees them fulfil their potential - and make no mistake about it - both Stiffy and I will rapt if they do, and will be glad to gorge ourselves on copious servings of warm humble pie (McDonalds or Homemade?).

In the wider scheme of things, too many people are personally hitting those who stand by what criticisms of players they may have or have had lately. Why is it that if you don't rate a player as highly as others your post count comes into it? Why is it that if you think a player happens to be overrated (far too many confuse this word with 'not rated') it's because you 'hate them'?

On the flipside, we all know Stiffy is a massive wrap for Hentschel and always has been - even when noone else believed - yet no-one reprimanded him for supposedly thinking he was more qualified to make that opinion because of his post count or for 'loving him' then... same goes in relation to my admiration for the oft-maligned Bassett.

I was on the train well before the season started.

Seem to remember WW and me in a couple of threads maintaining he'd come good as a wingman, where his strengths are maximised.

Given that I started the thread it is good to see the Mattner train has been vindicated.

But do not forget, I also changed the name of the train, during the thread to the Mattner-Doughty express. Its been running for quite a while now and I can tell you its a fast train to Footy park, MCG etc.

Its time for people to realise that Doughty is becoming a key figure in NC plan for defense. His pace and vision with the ball, are key elements of our drive from half back. He is well respected by his peers (listen to Careys comments earlier in the year) and he is getting tougher and tougher at the ball. He is in our best 22 - I have no doubt about that.

Dont be left out in the cold - its time to jump on whilst the train is still gathering speed.

Would you have said the same thing after the Collingwood game?

I think where stiffy falls down and where he will agree to some one sidedness is that he proclaims VB a future star yet has doubts over Mattner by saying lets see where he is next year. I agree the long term view is fine , but be consistent. Either everyone is a gun depending on how they perform in any given week or you dont assess anyone until they have played 30.

This is a forum where opinions are thrown up and threads are made over a dropped mark...skippy... so for us to change our minds isnt any sign of weakness but an accepted awareness that players DO improve.

I acknowledge where he can be inconsistent at times, but then again name a poster who hasn't been at one stage, considering we give our opinions on a wide array of issues concerning players, the club, the game, etc. repeatedly, and what's more, everything's there in black and white for all to see. There's bound to be inconsistencies and hypocrisy crop up from time to time.

The biggest problem I had was with the general tone of the post, whereby stiffy was first being personally taken down for the conviction of his opinion, rather than the content.

Ok Point taken
