IThe biggest problem I had was with the general tone of the post, whereby stiffy was first being personally taken down for the conviction of his opinion, rather than the content.
Particularly where that opinion was given nearly a year ago. If jtrain had read ahead Stiffy has said he's lining up for a ticket now.

I like to jump onboard if i could thanks.

Good to see they have started to play him on the Wing where he belongs.

Has always played there throughout juniors and seniors in country football and plays the possy fantasticly. Hopefully this match will give him more confidence and we will see this more often.

I hope those underlings that continue to give Mattner a hard time saw the game today.

Mattners third quarter was sensational, and one of the positives to come out of the game. His running of the lines enabled us to move the ball quickly out of defence and into attack.

People, it is now time to apologise. Have the courage and intestinal fortitude to admit that you were wrong.

A 189cm 21 year old with a big future. i think he can do more than just tackle!!!!!!!

Keep going Matty. You have been one of our better players over the last month and your increasing confidence is now beginning to show with your willingness to take on opponents.

Everytime Marty plays well it ********s me cause my mates all pay me out because our names are very similar ...... and now you spell his name wrong!!

I must have missed the part where Stiffy said his post count made his opinion worth more than the vast majority on these boards.

Secondly, have you ever heard of the cliche "one swallow does not a summer make"? Personally I've been very impressed with Mattner so far this year, and on the strength of his form and the way he's gone about it recently, I'm almost convinced he'll be a very good player for us in the long term, with the potential to play 200 games or more.

BUT...

I can see where Stiffy was/is coming from - just remembering these comments were made a year ago if you check the timestamp. Just like with my stance on Reilly, he'd prefer to see a good season or two of consistent football before being convinced of the player's truth worth and role in the side. Between now and the end of August both players will go on to play some good games, some bad games, and some mediocre games. The key will be for them to reach a level of consistency which sees them fulfil their potential - and make no mistake about it - both Stiffy and I will rapt if they do, and will be glad to gorge ourselves on copious servings of warm humble pie (McDonalds or Homemade?).

In the wider scheme of things, too many people are personally hitting those who stand by what criticisms of players they may have or have had lately. Why is it that if you don't rate a player as highly as others your post count comes into it? Why is it that if you think a player happens to be overrated (far too many confuse this word with 'not rated') it's because you 'hate them'?

On the flipside, we all know Stiffy is a massive wrap for Hentschel and always has been - even when noone else believed - yet no-one reprimanded him for supposedly thinking he was more qualified to make that opinion because of his post count or for 'loving him' then... same goes in relation to my admiration for the oft-maligned Bassett.
I nearly made the same mistake as JTrain when I read Stiffy's post as well. Luckily I saw the date before I nearly gave him a complete bollocking. Just goes to show that we can all make mistakes about players. Just like I hope I'm wrong about Jericho.

Would you have said the same thing after the Collingwood game?

Granted it was not one of Doggas finest efforts, but for too long now people have pillored this player for things he has done wrong, rather than the many other other things he does right - such as give us much needed pace off half back where many of NC attacks will come from. He has good vision and he can set up many attacks downfield.

You should know DT, by now that I have been one of his biggest fans, when many others were sharpening their axes. I have been singing his praises for the last year.

Boogie Knights might very well be my next!!!!

All aboard! All aboard!

I am on the Mattner train. Even though I am related to Marty I have been pretty critical of him. However, he has lifted a few notches and is doing really well.

k
xx

Wait for Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to come along for the ride now 2! And what a ride it'll be... I haven't really been a big fan of Marty in the past but this year the train's been gathering momentum and after the weekend I'm buying my ticket! Marty was awesome, he gets the ball and he runs man he is great when he puts his head down and goes! His tackles are awesome 2!

16,856 posts doesnt make you any more qualified that anyone else to give an opinion on a player - and it would appear that in this case - you are wholly unprepared to rescind on your previous mattner bashings, which up to a point in time, were genuninely warranted.

his performances during the pre season and the first 3 games of the year suggest that mattner is currently, very comfortablly, in our starting 18, and is well ahead of several other players - both younger and older on our list. he finished off last year reasonably well too.

i think it is fair to say that he is now a pretty good player - not a fringe player, nor a mediocre player making up the numbers.

he was probably in our best 3 yesterday. if you are waiting for him to win a brownlow medal before you call him a good player, then that is a little harsh, and also a convenient way of avoiding an inevitable admission on your own part - you were wrong. :D
Excuse me????

Where the hell did that one come from

That post was made a year ago and no my post count has nothing to do with wether my opinion is right or wrong. I have given a lot of credit to Mattner from pre-season games onwards. He has been terriffic on the wing but at the time that post was made I think those comments were warranted.

Next time check the date of the post before you mouth off.

This is a forum where opinions are thrown up and threads are made over a dropped mark...skippy... so for us to change our minds isnt any sign of weakness but an accepted awareness that players DO improve.
My love of the game has always picking the "talented" player early in their career and forcasting their future.

It opens you up to criticism on these type of forums because everyone wants them to prove their talent by getting 30+ possessions.

Gee anyone can predict a great future once they have gathered 30+ possessions several times but wheres the fun in that???

Stiffy, Macca, DT and many others put their neck on yhe line to make those early calls.

Stiffy called Hentschell early - I thought his mental fragility was an impediment - Stiffy won that one.

I called Mattner early because of his uncanny likeness in playing style to John Cahill - I got one up on Stiffy.

Macca has made an early call on VB

Gee people this is half the fun - and argueing your point of view as to why they will succeed - But I don't want to wait till after theyv'e made it - no fun there ;)

I am very happy with the way Mattner is going! He will have his ordinary moments and below average games, but I see a lot of locomotion in his game!

Remember JR said he was as good as a top 20 pick when elevated off the Rookie list - with Rutten and Bock - reckon he got 2 out of 3 right!

Quality post WW.

Like yourself, that's one of the aspects I love about footy - analyzing the up and coming talent bank and as you say, make the call before it happens, not after.

Sure, it leads to a lot of debate, but hell, what else are you gonna do on a footy forum. :D

I've liked VB since the first time I saw him at training in early January. I really like the VB I can visualize in 2 years time even more.

In the words of Bruce McAvaney - "'Speeeeeeeecial"

Can you possibly blow your trumpet any louder? Firstly you should remember that self-praise aint praise at all, so you should avoid it. Also, you cant call a player once hes been drafted and had a couple of yrs. And on these astute 'predictions' you have come up with, the club called hentschel very early and told everyone about it, matter was one of the lot they regarded as equal to a high draft pick, which in their reasoning allowed them to do the carey deal. And calling VB, well that is a bit of a joke isnt it, the club has been screaming about him all preseason. It is also important to realise that the first two have shown glimpses, but are far from the star status and may be good players at best. VB is an unknown.

If you are so interested in picking young talent as you say, take some time to see the TAC cup this yr as your in melbourne and you can tell everyone a couple of smokey's that you like. Anyone can say something nice about a player and i'm sure you would have for 90% of the players at some point in time. And really is expressing your opinion on here opens you up to criticism? Come on your talking yourself far too seriously.
