Re : Magarey Medal question, Please read my post on page 4 of 4 melbourne teams.
The National competition was very nearly made up of WA and SA with Victoria being an EQUAL partner, should this have occured it would not have phased me to see the Magarey medal pass as a part of AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL history, howeverI would fail to see the significance a SA medal had with WA or Victoria or other football state , except for the players from interstate leagues who had won it. In as much as the Sandover has little relevance to SA or Vic , except for the Interstate players who had one it. Exactly as much relevance as a Melbourne suburban medal has on interstate football.
When Interstate leagues had agreed to assist the VFL out of its near bankruptcy by fielding teams in a newly named AFL with $ 4 mill. license fees ( which saved a number of Victorian clubs from bakruptcy ). The understanding amongst all outside of Victoria was the New AFL was a national competition and that old VFL suburban melbourne traditions would be left just there.
Nope ....we was duped, twernt nothin' of the sort..
what we got was a huge degree of arrogance and patronization as the realization that our state leagues were now TOTALLY subordinate to the new mass spectator AFL based teams in our cities and the AFL/VFL had us exactly were they wanted...
Thats business I suppose...
