Society & Culture Getting called the wrong name

I am getting sick of people getting my name wrong.
My name is common, not difficult to pronounce, and even when I do correct people, they still don't seem to click that my name isn't what they think it is!
For the record, my name is Dean, however I have been misidentified by the following names:
- Dan, most common, somewhat understandable
- Danny
- Daniel
- Dane
- Dwayne
And the most bizarre one i got, was Steve.
I find myself having to drown out my name so it isn't misidentified.
I've got a guy at work, who I'm only working with for a week or so, who for some reason thinks my name is Daniel.
Do i bother to correct him? Or is too late?

Anyone else have some funny stories about getting their name mispronounced/misidentified?

I have a twin and people constantly get me mixed up with my twin. My Mother of all people still managed to get us mixed up... Although we have a nickname (My username) that our mates call us to save the mixup and often get called spinoffs of that name too.

I don't think it's ever too late to correct someone. I correct people sometimes a month down the track, they don't seem to mind. People have corrected me in the past, I don't bat an eyelid if they correct me. It clears everything up.

Where I used to work we had a guy named Mark, and one of the drivers called him Todd for about 3 years, we just used to laugh about it

At the same place there was a driver who was one of those guys I saw twice a week for a long time and got along really well but we skipped the introduction phase so we never really knew each others name. I knew his nickname from what other people called him, and he mustve read my name from a peice of paperwork but instead he thought my last name was my first and misread my last name so ended up calling me some strange version of my last name

My name is quite unique but not completely unheard of, often when I introduce myself people arent sure and repeat 'Damien?' back to me when thats not it but close but they get it right on the second time, so I guess I get confused with Damien a lot but never permanently

I get called Deano by my mates, but issue arise when I meet people for the first time.
The meeting will generally go like this:
"G'day I'm Dean"
"Hi Dan how are you?"
"No it's Dean actually"
"Oh Dane"
"No Deeeeeeeeean"
"ohhhhhh Deeeeeean"

Sometimes this is repeated numerous times and i just give up, and go with the flow.

I've been called 'Wong' instead of Wal by two different people years apart, despite there not being a trace of Asian in me that I'm aware of. I don't think Wong is a name that's particularly taken off in white Australia. Is it even a given name in Asian society? Other alternative names I've been given over the years include 'Warwick' and 'Warren', but I'd have thought these were barely more common these days than Wallace.

Separate to that, as a twin I get mistaken for my brother all the time, which actually doesn't bother me a great deal. Too bad we're not identical though, but to some people we look totally the same, I guess.

My wife is Chinese and used to pronounce my name (Mark) with an accent on the k....sounded a bit like "marker". So a lot of her Chinese friends thought my name was "Michael" for a long time.

The office lady at school used to constantly call me the name of this girl who did not resemble me in the slightest. She was part aboriginal, and although she was not terribly dark, I have skin that is white like a scandanavian's. Do not understand.......

And if someone struggles with the name Dean they're borderline ******ed.
