still prefer tshirts and comics to doing grown up things

but in the last two years i have gotten married... bought a house... and now (fingers crossed) am on the road to starting a family

old just happens - like continental drift... you don't notice

losing touch with new music is one reasonable indicator

I'm 28 and can feel myself going old as a symptom of not being in touch with young people.

I think that young people try hard to get involved in useless horrible stuff just so old people wont like it.

Then when sensible older people tell them it's garbage they defend it more and love it more.

I'm not getting old as a symptom of my own beliefs.

Forever young bitches. I exercise my imagination, I exercise my happiness. I embrace the pure human emotions that only children are allowed to display openly without prejudice in our society.

I don't beleive that people get more right winged as they get older it is just that their values and beliefs have not changed over time and they are viewed as conservative. I also think it has a lot to do with those who remain mentally active.

Take as an example Malcolm Fraser has he become more left wing as time has gone on? No. He has pretty much stayed the same, yet becaue of changes in the way speaks out on the social issues closest to him (immagration & foreign aid) he is seen to be more left wing, yet he is still preaching a similar line to what he did as PM.

Another example would be Catholics over 65, gay marriage is something they are staunchly against so we deem them right wing. My father is 80 and dead set against gay marriage with every ounce of his body, is he right wing? No, he that far left you'd think he's a communist almost.

People don't so much change as public perception does of what is normal. We as a society have moved markedly to the right over the last 30 years. 20 years ago I was centre-left, now I'm on the left moving towards the far left, have my opinions changed? no. Am I willing to accept change? yes, I just don't think that it is always for the better and that in recent year most political change has been for the worse.

Is that you son?:D
Ive found that the older Ive become the less tolerant of things Ive become.
Ive always called a spade a shovel and told it how it is as I see it. Unfortunately, this offends a few and I make no apologies:p for that in this increasingly "politically correct" world.

Can relate to a lot in this thread.

Im 28 and single again, and i am grateful everyday that im not tied down with kids and a girlfriend im bored with.

I have no intention of "growing up", whatever that means. I still feel like im 21 but now i have experience and wisdom. Just because i think dubstep is rubbish that doesnt mean i want to become a boring sod that wallows in self pity at the little mistakes id have running around annoying me and the gf id get bored of. Yes, im proud that i have high self value, aka a "selfish campaigner".

Ive had a marriage like relationship for over 2 years and am so glad i escaped it with no kids. So, so glad. I think i would have intentionally killed myself on the way home from work one day eventually if that happened. Settling down is not for me. I will either still be dating when im 40 or i will have found a woman who wants to swing til we die.

So, ive decided to do what i always wanted to do, move to melbourne. I used to feel like i was in my 40s just living in dullsville. January cant come quick enough.

I will die before i get "old". I dont care if old/miserable people think thats sad. They ****ing bore me.

What is more tragic out of a 40-50 something guy who wears track pants, makes Dad jokes and drinks Carlton Mid in moderation or a 40-50 something guy who can't acknowledge that he's not 21 any more and tries to be 'hip' and 'rad'?

I work in a building with prime examples of both and it's difficult to split them.

First sort of person would probably be a boring person regardless of age, second example cited is probably in the process is divorcing wife no. 1 so needs to be cut some slack.

Good question.

Ive just gotten a taste for motorcycle racing and will be dedicating a few years at least getting into the scene in victoria. Some people i know look at me like im crazy and stupid when i tell them. These are the picket fence and rugrat types.

In a years time i will ask their 10 year old kid who is cooler, me or their picnics and weddings accountant father.

The tragically hip are always cooler because we are more likely to be doing interesting things in our spare time.

Everyone has interests, whether it's motorbike riding or tennis or building those little model railways...

The 'cool Dad' scale is like a bell curve. At the one end you have the t-shirt tucked into the tracksuit pant Dad and at the other you have the 'I want to be cool and relevant' Dad with his Hypercolour shirt, earring and iPhone that he can't use. The one that kids like is usually somewhere in the middle.

If we split the middle are we talking chinos and boat shoes? On the subject of tennis.....

My mid life crisis should come on soon. Need to prepare. I'm not sure if I can afford a sports car. Might just go the cheap route and get meself a ponytail and ear ring. Either way, no 18 year bishes going to blow me.

I'm sure a smart man like yourself who can dress could pull off pretending to be richer/more important than you are to lure them in.

If not, you have an idea for a reverse Californication comedy.

I like the quote, "you are old once you can't accept changes". it doesnt matter what your age is actually.
