I think it is a pretty scary thought to lose all of Vardy, Clark and Kersten. Stanley is not known for his durability.

At least if Kersten stays there is some forward depth and you can lucky dip on some reject ruck for back up.

Reject rucks sometimes come good, reject forwards never come good and if they lost all three they would need to chase someone capable of playing forward and you shudder at how hard you would be scrapping the barrel in that situation.

It is. I wonder if the club would have fought harder to keep walker last year if they knew that vardy kersten and clark would go the year after (although walker could have gone in the psd like with these guys so we had little say in it). As i have said if we lose all these talls thos year we either need to trade in a cheapish kpf or move up the draft order (into that pick 15-25 range) so we can draft a good quality kpf prospect (actually both probably as one is now and the other future).

Gee PO come on Clark and Vardy haven't played bugger all footy for years now and Kerstens not a key forward, none will be really missed, the bloke that worries me is Stanley we need his signature and then look at the list.

You realise in 3 years stanley will be hitting 30 and hawkins 31 and this is when kersten vardy and walker would be in that prime 26-27 age group to take over. The best 22 might be fine now but the future certainly isnt unless we develop some kpf quality and depth.

Edit: vardy is older than i thought but for the other two this holds true. I hope kersten stays.

I really wanted Vardy to make it but that dream is over,Walkers gone and I was a fan even though my judgment may have been clouded by the memory of his grandfather, and Kersten to be blunt is a list clogger,Cocky will play his position next year Bartel or no Bartel, but yes I'd be looking at a key forward and a Ruck from outside if possible trade or Draft for our list no argument there.

Maybe it is the home influence that is causing his lack of desire?
No idea, but as I recall he requested to go home as he was struggling at Carlton. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I know he went home. Doesn't mean he's a 0% chance of coming to us. If next year he puts in similar performances to this year in the SANFL then he could be delisted. Either way feel he could make his way to the Cats, very unlikely this year but possibly end of next year when his contract finishes.
Where would you see him in our forward line? I imagine right now he would be competing with Cocky, Gregson and Cowan (given he was named at HF Friday) for the last spot. Is he better then any of them?

I think we debated the Mooney/Hawkins parallel a while back. Hawkins is the age now that are young key forward could be added or we will have to look at in system players in the next couple of years...eg. 2mp Easier said than done... really good KPFs usually go early at the draft .. and there are not a heap this year anyway.
It was mentioned that we may be looking at Kerr , he is not the big banger type , probably closer to Kersten than Hawkins but would be a good add...but one can only draft who is there with the picks you have. Not a great way to solve a hole in the list or an immediate need. (edit)..just to add , one GWS academy kid I liked that has not been talked about much was Zac Sproule. In ways he reminded me of Blitz , very mobile with a good tank ..he would be worth considering , and GWS may not match all bids.

Id say we would have to look at House as a Rookie and if we did lose all three , we need to ramp up the trade in approach ..players like Jimmy Stewart and Harry Himmelberg at GWS should be looked at... No idea really what it would take to move them.

Another option will probably be to play Henderson forward and find another defender. Henderson would probably be better than most available players.

The way things are falling I think 2017 is the year to chase a KPF in the draft. It's probably a year later than ideal but the talent of that particular draft and the flexibility of being able to trading future picks to draft earlier in the first round helps. It's really hard to get a premier KPF talent without being inside the top 10 of the draft and really, if your looking for a KPF to build around it's worth the sacrifice.

Not even Wells has been able to buck the trend when it comes to KPF's although Podsiadly was pretty close. We got extremely lucky with Hawkins as a F/S but I don't see that luck repeating. Think we'll have to pay full price if we want a top class forward to build our future around.

Not that the hawks would trade him to us but what would James Sicily be worth. Media people saying he is on the table in an attempt to get Mitchell and O'Meara. Would be a definite upgrade on Kersten.

I can imagine Wells trading up to get a pick in the teens or early 20's to try and secure Kerr in this years draft Dan. Already has a mature body so could come in within the next couple of years if he develops. Not sure if he would make a no.1 forward in the Hawkins mould but certainly appears a good prospective no.2. Though these days who knows? Gunstan is the Hawks no.1 and he's even smaller.

Agree mostly with all this although I don't think it's all doom and gloom. Hawkins still has a few good years left and can play with smaller players around him.
House or someone similar should be listed rookie or otherwise. I like Buzza he will take time but he is a good developing Mooney type tall.
Kersten should be kept even though he's not a big key forward. He's a good compliment to Hawkins and a young age he should have plenty of development left.
Vardy and Clark should be moved on along with Luxford they'd be the main list changes to make.
Henderson can and should spend some time forward. He's been very good in the backline but offers a lot forward too.
Lonergan should be offered another contract but at a low rate.
I think the vets should all be offered another year but on reduced wages. As they veterans list is going to mean more of their wages are in the cap.

And use the extra savings there to help bring the main list size back up.
Lucey I'd be happy to retain on the cat b list depending on who of the acadamey players slips through. Either way the cat b list should be full. Giving the teams at VFL and afl level full lists to choose from. And flexibility with vets being able to stay on a bit longer with less risk.

Maybe but it's a big risk to take. If you're trading up you'd want to be sure you don't get pipped for him.

Yes like with Cockatoo be interesting to know if he was always the target. Was some talk that Geelong were after Wright. Still plenty of time but Wright looks like he'll be the best player from that draft.

Gunstan is more the exception then a rule, and they tried to cover him by adding Schoenmakers and Fitzpatrick, they don't want him being the primary target they're force to.

We will have some quality f/s that we will need to use some picks on in 2017 though not forwards but pick was will make it harder.

Hmm that's a good one, talent-wise he is better than Gregson & Cowan definitely. But again it's the work-rate, Gregson & Cowan work very hard, they put lots of pressure on & tackle a lot, Troy Menzel only seems to run hard when he is a chance of getting a goal it seems.

So definitely not a certainty to pull his finger out if he comes to Geelong, but feel we are the best place for him to possibly do that. I thought he would improve a lot in SA back home & with tougher coaches but he just hasn't, maybe only training alongside his brother will help him understand.

Is a different type of forward though to Daniel, Troy seems better when the ball is on the ground & he doesn't take many overhead marks at all, while Daniel has fantastic hands marking overhead, Troy is also more agile but that's obvious because Daniel can't be as agile after the knees.

But a forward line of Hawkins, D. Menzel, T. Menzel, Cockatoo, Motlop, McCarthy with sometimes a resting ruck up there I feel would be very dangerous. Hawkins, Smith/Stanley the talls, while D. Menzel can still take overhead marks for sure, but then when ball hits the ground the forward 50 pressure from Cocky, McCarthy, Motlop & hopefully T. Menzel (if he works harder) would be incredible.

According to a few of the VFL boys that i am mates with, Lucey is gone and Clark has retired.
Based on the way things have panned out this year that isn't too hard to believe.

There was always a suspicion, especially as the year wore on, that there was more to Clark's "disappearance" while Lucey did himself no favours in the VFL final (don't think I saw him jump at one ruck contest).

Also potentially counting against Lucey is the fact we have named 4 kids from the Next Generation Academy who can be listed as Category B rookies if not selected earlier.

Geelong probably wants to free up the slots and Lucey, while showing some improvement in his time with us, would still be miles behind Smith, Stanley and Blicavs.

Those names also seem to be why we keep hearing noises that Vardy is likely to seek opportunities elsewhere too.

As Pure_Ownage has said earlier, if Clark, Vardy, Kersten and even Lucey all depart at season's end we suddenly don't have too much tall depth, especially up forward.

Makes for an interesting post season.
