Ok. I get what you are saying. But it sounds like a recipe for a long period of mediocrity to me. We either get these players and give it a red hot crack for two more years or start a rebuild for mine.
I hear you ... but one can not argue that its highly unlikely that any clubs can build a Premiership team from draft picks..if GWS cant or at least have not yet. And even they have added several mature players. If we had a chance to have the amount of early picks that they have had perhaps we would have taken a different tack but we have not ..in fact no team has.

Really we are between a rock and a hard place... we have not had a early draft pick come one for sometime... why? either too many high risk selections or poor development or just no picks early enough?
How to correct that.... trade out picks and get known quality in ... perhaps having a Danger year at the draft ..what was it 4 of the last 11.. trade our R2's etc for a quality known commodity and get wells to push the envelope to get another Stewart or a Menegola.
Even if we keep 20... I doubt we could get much more impact than Parfitt gave us...and then late picks like ZacGuthrie showed that we can picks up players late.

And its not just us in this bind.... the inability to really get multiple players early in a draft with no PPicks means that all clubs have a constipated rebuild and then still may fail.

Cant change a horse mid stream they say... and I think we are water committed.

If stringer nominates essendon...

Our no.1 goal of trade week is:

To keep motlop.

Give him more cash ffs. We cannot be in a situation where we lose him and don't bring in someone of equal ability.

Ablett is superfluous to this. I don't care if we get him or not, I prefer not to give up a young player or pick under 50.

Absolutely disappointing to lose out on stringer if true. He's the only gun in the pool atm. The rest won't make a difference to us. It MUST be about keeping motlop now.

You dont base a whole trade and draft period around one player that's silly.

I know.

Hypothetically (even assuming we give up a young player for gaz)

1. if we don't get stringer, lose motlop but bring in smith = draw or slight loss

2. No stringer, miss out on smith lose motlop = diabolically poor, we won't be close to top 4

3. Get stringer, miss smith lose motlop. Slight win

4. Get stringer and smith lose motlop = win

5. Get stringer smith and keep mots = huge win but unlikely.

I'm banking on 2. Which will be a disaster

It seems to me that Geelong are trying to inspire these players from other clubs to come and play with Selwood and Dangerfield, +/- Ablett, but don't have much else to barter with. At the end of the day if Dangerfield is taking unders, then none of these other guys are going to be offered what they could get elsewhere.

I dont disagree with your thoughts on ablett.

But motlop is not the be all and end all as well it's never a make or break on one player.

Still another week and half before the bloody trade period even gets underway, and then there's almost two weeks of that to deal with. Oh silly season, what would we do without you?
Try European football on for size. Goes for 3 months, in which time the local rags will try and sell off every player in the team. Make up shit all along and 90% still gets done in the last 24 hours. #painful

Jesus not getting Stringer or Smith and loosing Mots and a Lang would be an absolute disaster for us... Gaz or no Gaz
Que playing with fire meme ...

I think as Caddy showed last year..once you start someone thinking about playing elsewhere because you want to use them in a trade... there is no tap when that trade falls thru..quite often once turned on , the idea of movement appeals more and more.

But disaster ...? Mots is a FA so ..we just have to suck it up. Lang is hardly a indispensable cog in our best 22

I have been an advocate for mid year trades have some merit. An Ablett deal when it was so obvious what the outcome would have been mutually beneficial ... why not just rip the bandaid off and get the thing done ... the appeal of having Ablett heading into finals may mean a better trade for GC... but going by your post maybe not clear cut.

where are the sycophantic masses at in the Ablett cycle right now?

Whilst our season was still "alive" it was all the usual bluster about how "we hold all the cards", pick 70 or gtfo, then a straight swap for a ruggles or Murdoch. Now we are at Lang, maybe even lang, pick and salary. With close to 2 weeks before trade period even starts, I wonder where the "romantics" will end up?

Anyone with their head screwed on knew it was $1.01 that the Cats will overpay relative to the expectation here. Because emotional investing is never a good idea. And I wonder how desperate we'll get if Ablett is all that is left on the table for us. This could get really ugly I reckon, and GC will hold out if they see the cards haven't fallen our way. If you wanna play the trading game, it is wise to factor in more losing hands than winning ones.

Even before Stringer nominated Essendon I rated retaining Motlop as our key list management priority.

Unless Port goes absolutely mental, I would offer Mots whatever the market stipulates is his value. Even if we end up paying him more than whatever his detractors argue his output is commensurate with - and I disagree with most of his critics anyway - the playing profile of our list is such that we have a deficit, both quantity-wise and quality-wise, of players able to fill the Motlop role, and therefore his worth to Geelong is more than it may be to other clubs who already have options in his position. It's essential that we do everything within our power to keep him.
