I think he is waiting on kelly. If kelly goes they might offer him an extra 250k and that might keep him, if kelly stays he is gone and i suspect we are in the box seat. Either way no reason for him to sign with gws soon.

I hope we can get him for carltons 2nd rounder plus maybe change (throw in a late pick or something) and ablett for a nothing 5th rounder.
Would they though?.. Or would they just secure other mids they see as better long term players than Smith. Hooper, Kennedy , Setterfield.. there is no shortage of candidates..
Would 250 be enough for him to change his mind if he really wants to come to Geelong..other have knocked back more than that.

Depends on why he is coming. If its homesickness he will come even if they up the offer (which means he is already gone we just don't know) but if its hes ambivalent but happy to be home if he also gets a pay rise and we are offering say 600 (motlop money) he might stay if they get to 550.

I suspect if kelly goes they will try and use his money to keep everyone else and if he stays they will push smith out by lowballing him and will try to keep the locals.

Reading between the lines on here, someone mentioned that he asked the club last year for a trade.. yet you put forward a case where he might be on more coin with us than them. I guess it gets down to ..is he coming for money or the residential location. If I was getting around the same money and I was happy and I was best 22 up there , Id have to be think why move. Their chance for success has to be better than ours. If he is moving for Danger reasons..then , as you say , he is probably already gone.

2018 1st would have to be involved for that (which i wouldnt be against but the club might be).
Luckily , we will not be tempted with that.. if we did trade it would be 4 years in a row. To counterbalance that , it would be a recruitment that would go a long way towards a long term replacement for Selwood and Danger. Would Hooper be a little too much like Scooter?

If you were Wells .. thats the conundrum for you to nut out.

On one hand.. Hooper would represent a player drafted in a Selwood /Dangerfield location in the draft ..or actually earlier in Dangers case. In a best guess , it would be earlier than our R1 would be.
On the other hand.. to trade out 4 drafts in a row would seem on superficially as too trade oriented and not draft focused. For someone of Hoopers age and his draft year year being only 2 years ago , one could easily make the argument that he would be as good as going to the draft.

Basically my only concern would be that we would yet again be ignoring KPF , apart from that.. yes Hooper is going to be an a grade player. Hooper would probably find better offer elsewhere though.

Ive been critical of club trading away draft picks so hardly can say yeah lets do it. Anyway we dont have a first round pick do we? Thought we traded our future one away?

Asked for a trade end of last year..
Any idea what the reason was?
Perhaps something like..... Loved the way you brought Danger in , and gees there is a hell of a lot of talent up here. , and its in the middle of nowhere. You guys have got the a hamburger with the lot down there, you pay fair , you make finals, you have good conditions that are getting better and I can live 20 minutes from the beach..

Any idea what the response was?
Perhaps something like ... Sorry buddy we are out of picks.. but we love you , we will come back in 12 months when you are OOC..whatever you don don't rush into signing a new contract....

Sorry Turbo can't give you much other than that it was a matter of fact comment from a close source. Obvious factors of course and I'm guessing even though we secured Parfitt small forward wasn't pushed at the draft in the knowledge this was a fair accompli 12 months down the track..

D.Smith has always been coming to Geelong since about half way through last year. Got nothing to do with Kelly.

I would be interested to know if the clubs view on our likely F/S picks makes it more or less likely that we would trade our 2018 1st rounder? Hard to know.

I think we can get smith without a 1st rounder and while i rate hopper like you i wonder if it would be worth it given how strong our midfield already is, is the gain just marginal? If we were to trade a high pick like that i would rather it's used to fill an obvious need like a key forward or small forward.
