5 clubs after Gaff but not us.. thankfully. If the Eagles are offering 750.. its going to cost a fair bit more to get his as a FA.
Whats the level of payment to player that earns the club comp level1 .... 1M ?
I still find it incredible that Richmond are willing to potentially commit around a fifth of their cap to just Dusty and Lynch. The aggressiveness of their list management in the last few years has been quite remarkable.

I wouldn't put it past Richmond to make terrible management decisions. If 1/5th goes to those two, the wheels will fall off in no time.

I am a big NFL fan. To be honest, it is pretty rare that big $ signings payoff and they have had a lot longer at this FA stuff than us. Outside of perhaps getting yourself a true franchise QB splashing big cash around very rarely works.

In the AFL, as much as we all still lose our shit over big guys, gone are the days I think when you need a truly dominant big man. Its not like every goal now is kicked by your FF and CHF combo. There are perhaps 5-6 true match winners in the AFL, that I think are worth really big money. These are guys that on the regular, win the game off their own boot. We don't need one, because we already have one. His name is Dangerfield and we were lucky that we got him below market because he happens to be born in Moggs Creek! (This is the football equivalent of the life equivalent of being born in Australia and not Haiti).

The best recruiting is what we have done over the last few years. Mid money players, who are keen to move clubs because they want a change. Hendo, Tuohy, Crameri, Smith, Stanley, Black. etc. Regardless if you think these players are good, bad or indifferent, we didn't sell the farm to get them, so if they don't work out, they play some VFL, get the occasional call up when required, then they are gone. You aren't saddled with Daisy Thomas at $750k a year for 5 years, or Tippett playing for a $1M a year then retiring after lists have been lodged. (Add in our mature aged recruits and again, paying MASSIVE unders for players with immediate value). Hawthorn did the same for years.

(it helps if you are both good and known as a good club to go to - stable, good resources, etc). Even what Port did, the jury is out on if it will work. But they are in the top 8 and again they didn't sell the farm to get 3-4 good first 22 players. I still don't think that any of their recruits aren't in their 22 and again they aren't paying any of them f***you money.

We all love the chat about $1M players and those "big names" but really in FA this year, I would be looking at clubs like Essendon, Dogs, Carlton, Collingwood, etc. Clubs that are in the bottom 6-7 and thinking. Who there might be keen for a move - sort of how we plundered Carlton a few years back.

TBH I think our list is in the best shape it has been in years, in particular depth wise. I don't really think we need to do anything massive in FA this year. Perhaps some players around the edges and go back to the draft for some kids. A ruckman or CHB/FB could be king. There may be a 2nd ruck somewhere that is worth taking a punt on in particular as it seems every team but us has one.

Good post ScottyD ...
The thing that you made me think about is the "big money" thing... . How do we define big money these days..do we compare what guys earn to the average wage in aust or what the comp earns or what is paid in other comps. I think it almost got to be a percentage of cap .. and if you bring in a "big money" guy .. you use up any more than 10% of your cap and you are probably being borderline reckless. I think our top guys might be 7-9% range but of course the SC is expanding out to 13.5M by 2022

Combining a couple of thoughts above if we can poach a ruck from one of the bottom clubs at a decent price or preferably as a free agent that’d be ideal.

A bit has been made about Preuss dropping off this year and there was an article on his stats somewhere which did show a drop off around the ground but his ruck work had stayed pretty consistant. I'd definitely still be interested and his trade value would have taken a bit of hit due to the perception. I guess the sticking point is Goldstein ageing, youd really need Preuss to agitate for a move to try and force their hand into trading him. Id say he would be worth an early second round pick which we dont have though.

I'd be looking at ruckmen that have shown they can play at AFL level, but can't get into the seniors - try pull a Mumford type deal. Guys like Braydon Preuss, Sean Darcy, Tom Nicholls etc (injuries aside).
This. Forget mids like Gaff etc, we desperately need to go out and find a ruck. We need to do what Hawks did a few years ago when they went and got Mcevoy. Just make it happen. Our ruck division is close to the worst in the AFL. Get a competent ruck that can actually influence a game of footy, trade/delist Stanley and keep Smith as back-up in the VFL should he be required to cover for injury etc. There are good rucks out there, we just need to get the right one, even if we do have to pay overs..

Lycett is an attractive free agent option and he could just replace Stanley in the list while still keeping Smith as backup.
But what price would he want to move across to Geelong? I wouldn’t be paying him big dollars as we’ve never seen him really dominate games let alone a whole season.
I really doubt Kreuzer leaves now having stuck it out for so long. The saints rucks are rubbish same with the bombers and Martin is too old at the lions. Goldstein and probably Sandilands will play again next year. So although they’re getting on how long do Darcy and Preuss wait?
Darcy is a geelong boy and would be ideal imo through them next years first round and get it done.

The only players on my wishlist are D Parish and J Hopper. Both are contracted though as far as I'm aware.
And parish just got dropped..

Can play.. and pops has a good relationship with him when at Dons..

I’m watching with interest

He's a local boy too. He would be a good get, but the Dons would demand something ridiculous in return. They're as we all know, notoriously difficult to deal with at the trade table. But I reckon we need to prioritise getting a decent ruck first in my view.

1/ nicnat isn't leaving wa.
2/ we couldn't afford him
3/ Kelly wouldn't get it done
4 there aren't houses in Geelong big enough to hold his Nike collection. He definately has a vice.
Haha I wasn't being serious. My phone neglected to add the laughing emojis I had initially put at the end of that post.

not Nicholls, it would be no improvement on what we already have. Smith has much more upside
The other two big bodies would be handy

I think Parish is very gettable, have heard murmurs he wants to get to Geelong, watch this space is all I will say on it.
I think he's gettable too, and would be a first-22 fixture (especially in a post-Ablett era), and he probably does fill a need, too. Not quite ruckman-level-need, but we do need more young bodies in the middle for the post-Selwood future.
