I do rate worpel and constable but the only issue is i am not sure that they are likely to be able to play anywhere except clearance mid. The issue there is then they will sit in the vfl for years with no games unless we move current players to other positions to get them in (for eg duncan to win or guthrie defence or danger forward etc) and i am not sure if we will want to do that. It is easier to fit outside mid draftees in the side as we don't have many decent ones.

Agree with the other points the rest of your post raises though.
Obviously don't want a situation like GHS but a year or two of a couple of games in and mostly learning through the VFL is fine. I'm for Guthrie going back, Ablett forward mostly particularly after his first year, how long does Selwood have left? It's not ideal having players like Menegola playing out of position but if we had the small forwards then he plays mid or they miss game. It's a balance for sure but I'd rather have too many mids than not enough and do worry about the future of our midfield. With the outside mids I just worry unless they are top 10 quality if they will make it. We've been burnt a few times with those type of players and them and undersized forwards concern me.

I would have Petty ahead of taylor for sure. Does all the same things but is a much better kick. Also he sister is an aussie netballer so clearly talent in the family!
Agree totally - really like him having seen him play. He really is Cats KPD in the making and with Scarlo coaching him his chances of being in our best 22 are very high.

Mathew Balmer has released his analysis on his Phantom Draft for Picks 1 - 25. Its a good read, overall with his other article on Picks 26-50.

https://www.afl*******************/tag/matt-balmer/

Things to note -
  • Ballard has tested well.
  • Fogarty has good stats, particularly as a scoring pressure forward
  • Ling's 20m sprint results are solid but not ground-breaking, he must have a good top speed and sidestep.
  • Murphy is not that fast nor that agile, but has an ok tank, is an exceptional mark for his height.
  • Patmore may be a good outside midfield option with a late pick.
  • Taylor has tested well, and competed well, we would be crazy not to select him.
  • Starcevich seems to be quite an athlete, strong, fast, stamina, agility, but he doesn't get the ball enough, need to assess his upside.
  • Bailey looks the best midfielder outside the Top 25.

I don't think we'd reach for a player like Zac Bailey at 24 personally, I really like the way he goes about it but that kicking is a big worry for me looks to struggle to kick 40m that being said looking at his highlights does remind me of Luke Parker a bit.

I reckon in a professional environment both his leg strength and flexibility will improve markedly meaning that his kicking length would improve.

You reckon? I don't think he lacks the ability to kick it with power, its more just an action that needs to be tightened up as he occasionally hacks it badly.

Still, the one knock on Parfitt was supposed to be kicking and he's come along quite nicely already.

The problem with bailey from that vision is he gets caught a lot. He’s not quite quick enough to break away, he gets into trouble and is forced to dish it off to a team mate under pressure.

No where near Parfitt at the same age. Parfitt had much more composure and a great side step to create more time. Bailey looks rushed and gets caught.

He’s only get caught more at AFL.

Not worth an early pick for mine. I’d consider him with 35 onwards.

It's far from his best vision, or a comprehensive look at him. The SANFL footage I linked previously had a fair bit showing how clever he was in congestion at getting the ball out or to a teammate.

He isn't the same player as Parfitt, who lives in his own bubble of space-time. But then very few players have Parfitt's particular game style so it doesn't seem like a great comparison imo. I was just talking about the kicking.

That kicking tenchique is absolutely horrendous, has some good attributes though.

Can I just say I greatly appreciate the insights from so many of you on here.

As someone who doesn't follow the junior programs closely, this thread is certainly an interesting read throughout the year and in particular at draft time with all the differing opinions and observations.

Once again, thank you.

I don't think many would consider it a reach at #24 for Bailey. He's been invited to the draft as a possible top 10 selection.

We need more players with that aggressive streak. It's hard to name even one in our team right now. Back in the flag years we had Chappy, Mooney, Milburn, Rooke etc. I think, aside from thinking the kid can actually play the game, we should bring in a bit of "c".
The "c" is a query & quite disgusting for me because of what I think your actual meaning is, a bit of mongrel is fine as long as it is legal.

Don't deny we need those tough players. Don't look past Sel if your definition is tough.

Not sure what you're getting at? Mongrel, "c" - whatever you want to call it. Some players that are physically and mentally intimidating.

If we draft Taylor and O'Brien start rejoicing.

Interesting that Wells says we'll probably only use 4 picks in the National Draft and take Hayball with our only rookie selection in the rookie draft ... he then goes on to say that they're strongly considering Crameri and Ruggles as rookies. Am I missing something?

Simple. 34 players senior list 4 rookies currently 38 44 total reqd. Cant have more than 39 on list if room for 5th rookie. So we will take 5 ND picks plus 1 rookie or 4 ND picks and 2 rookies (hayball plus crameri or ruggles etc).

So It's 4 ND picks and 2 rookies. That's my guess.

Referring back to the call for more mongrel by another poster, your disquiet is well placed. The MRP since those mentioned (Chappy, Mooney, Milburn, Rooke etc) have said many times anyone wearing the hoops will be treated harshly unless they are very very lucky.

The coaching staff are still trying to take the mongrel out of the players and keeping their attack on the ball - they have no other option.

We have seen that Hawkins must not react to players in his face hanging on to his jumper!. Duncan cannot push anyone with a bit of force. I won't go in to how Johnston , Selwood, Cockatoo, Dangerfield and others have been treated.

Some of the decisions during the finals were mind boggling considering the decisions we copped moving towards another tilt.

Funny that you say that. I watched the same video and was impressed by his ability to stand up in a tackle and dish the ball off without losing his feet or composure.
