Spot on, Smith is ours if the Dogs take Caldwell. Latest rumours have it as:

1 CAR Walsh
2 GCS Lukosius
3 GCS Rankine
4 STK M.King
5 PTA Rozee
6 GCS B.King
7 WBD Caldwell
8 ADL Jones
9 GWS Clark
10 PTA ???
11 GWS Hately
12 GEE B.Smith

That would be a dream. Is your mail on Bulldogs taking Caldwell (who incidentally I think is the better talent of the two) reliable?

Just gleaning from what Twomey’s said. He seems to think the Dogs are tossing up between the two, and previously he’s said a lot of clubs in the top 10 have Caldwell ahead of Smith.

TBH Smith seems like a bit of a flog and I’m not sure he’d be the best bloke to have around the club.

Boy if the rumours about Walsh along with the interviews I have seen are true he seems like an all time dick. Not to say I wouldn;t take him cause I definitely would but seems like an incredibly arrogant and entitled kid.

I honestly don’t understand the Kolo bashing on this board. He’s only 23 and is on the verge of reaching 50 games. He’ll be a ripper.

Not bashing him......yet.

But he hears footsteps, and he coughs it up too often.

He may improve, but for mine he definitely needs to, and quickly.

Cause he won the best player in the u/18 champs? Hahahaha boy oh boy if you think credentials are the most important thing at junior level you need to learn a lot more. Why do you think Morrish medalists often struggle. It is because it is about projection. Perhaps more importantly you can't measure credentials when one is playing against kids and winning things against kids and the others are playing against men in the strongest comp outside the AFL.

That's why Hately is underrated and he's young in the group as well.

Haven't heard / seen it, but if what you say is true then I'd pass.

Talent is one thing, but such attitude is not what we need when the club is trying to improve the chemistry within the playing group. Arrogance can be very cancerous

Really not convinced. I'll give him 2019, but gee whiz he'll want to improve imo
Kolo no problem as far as I'm concerned down back. But please keep the entire Guthrie family out of our backline from here on. I don't even want Ben to speak about defense in the media. For mine it is Blitz, Stewart, Bews, Tuohy, Henderson, Taylor, Henry, Kolo, O'Connor through there. No Guthries with emphasis.

Smith is clearly extremely driven. His attention to detail with his training is obsessive and can be confused with being arrogant. He would set high standards for himself and I dare say his teammates. As long as that could be managed I’m not sure that is necessarily a bad thing.

My comp for him is Goddard.

Might be apt in more ways than one.

Happy to keep the Guthries outta there, but I have no more confidence in Kolo than them either

Maybe. Goddard particularly towards the back end of his career was far too abrasive and demonstrable to his teammates if he felt that the year hadn’t performed. He would be a good example of how NOT to carry on. Not great for team morale. I’ve seen no evidence that Smith is critical of his teammates. I think he just appears to have an obsessive personality.

Playing comp.

I haven't heard of him being a flog either but if he is, he might be like Goddard in more ways than one.

We're tossing up between Smith, King and trading down for a couple of GWS picks. ITKs on our board said we're not really that into Caldwell.

Are gone by 12, I think we need to downgrade for a late first + a second.

Freo, gws the options
I think if we trade our pick so late in the piece, eg with only a pick remaining, it will only devalue our Pick 12 (or 14 or whatever it becomes) in a possible trade. We might not get anything for it.

Its like trying to sell something in the last minute.

There’s no way our future first rounder should be on the table. It only takes a couple of things to go wrong next season and we could be in line for a pick around the #10 mark.
Have to agree, we need to go back to the draft and hold our first picks for the next few years at least, bring in some elite talent each year.

Caldwell is just about as talented as anyone just need to get him right, has a higher ceiling than Smith for mine, seems alot less of a flog from all the footage I have seen aswell will be interesting what the Dogs do there.

Going to be important to get our top pick right this year, both for our short and long term.
Seems like the players that we are likely to access at pick 12 have no bad injury history (which is extremely important given our poor record and ideally to get games into them in 2019).
I think we need to heavily weight very good to elite foot skills and speed in our decision - these are significant gaps now. We should only compromise on these (and even then only marginally) if the pick is almost guaranteed to be elite in all other facets particularly leadership quality, contested ball winning and footy nous (ie possible replacement for Joel et al).
