Just for shits and giggles I put together a quick retrospective team if we got the best available player in hindsight from 2007 to now.

Not a bad little team.

B - Stewart Blicavs Isaac Smith (Smedts 2010)

HB - James Sicily (Walker 2011) Jake Lever (Cockatoo 2014) Duncan

C - Zac Merrett (Lang 2013) Selwood Brad Hill (Hamling 2011)

HF - Luke Parker (Norlin-Smith 2010) Ben Brown (Jansen 2013) Lachie Neale (Murdoch 2011)

F - Ablett Hawkins Michael Walters (Hunt 2007)

R - Brodie Grundy (Thurlow 2012) Dangerfield Nathan Fyfe (Menzel 2009)

Int - Rory Sloane (Motlop 2008) Luke Shuey (Brown 2008) Jack Stevens (Simpson 2007) Taylor

Emerg - Clark Parfitt Menegola Guthrie

Pretty much the same team every other AFL cloud would end up with in such a hypothetical

Grundy was the main one. Shocking

He was actually a very high pick that year given the extinction talks and insignificance of ruckmen at the time he was drafted. To go first round was quite a big deal. Only club to pull the pin and very late was collingwood in the first round

Keep the chat in this thread to the current year pls...
The content of previous years is not objectionalbe in any way however it can spin off and derail this very easily.

Give him 12 months...

If he was so desperate then why the hell did he overvalue himself to such a ridiculous level? He was never worth anywhere near a mil a year. He must be dumb as a rock thinking anyone would pay him that.

Because of that you have to laugh at him being stuck in adelaide. He had that coming.

Hindsight is always 20/20 ... we are talking about a period of time that is perhaps covers the greatest success in the clubs history ..continual wins , week after week ..high finishes ..meshed with the socialistic intent that we have a few missies is not only to be expected but is essential in afl eyes. Imagine if we did get every pick right... not only would we have cap issues.... I dare say the afl would be doing their under table best to get Wells to the Gold Coast or GWS or anywhere away from geelong. One might say they already did a bit of that with ablett in 2010.

And in all likelihood .. there will be a time when we will be able to look back on this era and this draft year and say the same. Go back and loo at the write up for those taken ..and I'm sure there would be some positive things to be said about what their future may be. Smedts for instance was at one time thought to be a future star. Fyfe instead on Menzel is taking the P155 in a way.. Who is to say... this year some would be very happy to get McAsey or Flanders .. and anyone could have a bad luck story. Its why you need more than just 1 pick. The danger in trading down ..and tehn turning that into eggs all in one basket situation. To me getting a Kemp and and Bergman with 14 and 17 would be more preferable than trading down and go eggs/basket with one player rated earlier... this year.

Have you watched the U18 games this season.? McAsey has played multiple positions.

Which possie do you think is his forte.?
Key defence as reported. Haven't really watched him but reading that he's only really gone forward here and there. Listed everywhere you look as a key defender first.

No, McAsey played more down back than forward, but he played forward. Bailey Williams was clearly overrated last year. The only reason his numbers looked decent was because he was 199cm and 100kg playing against 17 and 18 year olds. Unfair comparison imo.
This may be true, but it worries me that the number 1 key forward prospect is being played majority as a key defender and is also being touted as the number 1 key defender. When he played forward which key defenders was he beating? I'll have to go watch some more footage of him, but on the face of it this does sound like a Bailey Williams type scenario

Re-watched the U18 SA v Allies game today. I am baffled Harry Schoenberg is rated in the 25-50 range on AFL.com.au. He is an absolute jet and I see no glaring weaknesses.

He (29 disposals, 8 clearances) even outpointed Rowell (26d, 4cl) and Anderson (27d) against VIC Metro on his way to claiming MVP honours for SA, and recording the second most disposals throughout the carnival. I’d be more than happy to take him with our first.

I think the concerns are he doesnt hit the scoreboard as much as guys like Flanders etc and his height and lack of goalscoring ability will limit his ability to make it in any other role than clearance mid and recruiters like versatility. But he is a good player.

This is also pretty baffling. It’s not like he doesn’t kick goals. He kicked one in the Champs, Anderson and Flanders only kicked two themselves. He kicked a goal in four of his seven SANFL games, and 0.2 in another.

Not really. Club like Carlton would have an AA side playing for them in such an exercise.

Melbourne could have had a ruck/midfield of Gawn, Grundy (Toumpas), Dangerfield (Morton), Martin (Scully), Fyfe (Trengove), Cripps (Salem) and Whitfield (Hogan).

Throw in Rance for Jack Grimes, Sidebottom for Watts, Talia for Gysberts, Gunston for Tapscott, Jack Darling for Cook, De Goey for Petracca. And that is just looking at their top 20 picks lol.

Is that like the same way Fyfe does not hit the scoreboard - ?
I ask because I have no clue..
Does he get opportunity and miss or he’s not getting to right spots to have the shots ... or he sets others up with his possessions.

I guess anyone in the same comp as Rowell and anderson will get my attention..

Wells sleeper or a reach at 17?

Massive reach at 17. He has the same problem as Robertson in he can only play midfield. Flanders is so good in the forward line he can play there season 1 and slowly gain more exposure to the midfield which is much better for development.

Just look at constable and the way he has been stuck in the vfl. If he was serviceable in other positions he might have got more games

These games are always silly, it wouldn't matter what picks you have if you had a time machine

This is why l think there's plenty of good players underrated in the phantoms, it's a smorgesboard out to 30 l reckon.

Mmmm... Correct me if i am wrong in remembering 2012 too well.
So after handing over our 2012 2nd round pick (35) to North Melbourne to sign a 27yo Hamish McIntosh to be our Number 1 Ruck for the next 3-5 years.
Whilst also having West-Vardy-Simpson and a hybrid Blitz as 2nd 3rd 4th choices.
You wanted the club to draft another Ruckman with our first round pick in the same year ??
Would be like trading our Pick 36 to GCS for Jarrod Witts then drafting Luke Jackson with Pick 14 this year (No picks 17 & 24 up our sleeves either)
Yeah nah... The Grundy draft blunder sounds like a great hindsight i told you so story. But when you actually delve a little further you understand why he wasn't a realistic pick after acquiring a Number 1 ruck with our second rounder via trade weeks before the draft.
AFL List Management 101 would probably in all likelihood say having 4-5 Ruckman on your list would be madness.
Anyway... this all harry hindsight dribble.
Correct me if i am wrong with our 2012 trading & drafting period which also yielded Caddy & Rivers.
Anyway Cheers & Bring On the 2019 Draft.

It is not hindsight. A lot of people melting after the draft on here about not getting Grundy. Those people were proven correct

Wells was shocking around that time though so not a big surprise

Just like Robertson, he doesn't hit the scoreboard much either.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but here kinda fits.

Nakia Cockatoo.

I've not seen or heard anything about him. Is he still alive...... Is he still at the GFC..... Has anyone actually seen him since mid 2018?

Just curious.

He’s fit. Will be returning to training this Tuesday with the 1-4 year players along with Jack Steven and Mitch Duncan.
