What’s changed with the Jack Steven situation?
First time on trade radio Wells says “I think it’s reasonable to think Steven will be at Geelong next year”
Then in a short time does a 180 on it.

Has something changed for us?
Or is it a case of St Kilda realising that all the players they want are going to cost them more than they want to give up? I read that they don’t have a lot of picks so would probably try to get Geelong to pay for Steven with a usable pick - obviously something we probably didn’t think we’d be doing initially.

Yes, from what's been inferred St Kilda are wanting too high a pick - probably one they can use for other trades, well above Steven's current worth.

Yeah, I think saints might be pricing us out. That's fair enough, he's a contracted player of theirs.

I would like to think Wells has his eye on a bigger fish, but that’s dreaming.

The bloke is FREE next year as an UFA so a 2nd round pick for all the things wrong with him seems a mighty high price to pay for a years rental. Added on top they need him out to now to bring in others.

Yep we need that years rental granted but I’d rather a 3rd round pick of GTFO

He has been played down back a fair bit this year with Abbott/Kreuger/Smith/Fort all sharing KP roles with him. Any decision they make on him becoming a defender long term will be based on plenty of evidence

Should be done with Buzz and Abbott if still on the list.
Bit late for Abbott l think.

He might be handy to have for that year's rental, but I don't think we need it, especially being a big risk with his current fitness and other issues. I would much prefer to wait for a year if they're demanding anything higher than a 3rd rounder too - he'd be UFA next year and it would be less of a risk as it would be clear if he had got his fitness back and his other issues had been resolved or improved.

Can they delist and re-rookie. Seriously will either of them see game time anytime soon if ever. I’d be more confident on ZGuthrie but Simpson doesn’t have the size or hurt factor to ever be an AFL player in my opinion.
Not sure you can delist players who have just spent 3-years on the rookie list only to redraft them as rookies - thinking there may be something in the rules around that

Steven will still get to Geelong. Saints surprised themselves with too many players saying yes. Hence, need currency. I don't think much changes here. They will fold.

Kelly is going to be interesting. I suspect Freo will come in with a new $$$ offer to Kelly and he will change his mind to get it done. Remember too that Freo can't even make an offer until they trade Hill to Saints as they may need that pick for Kelly.

This draft feels like Geelong will look after Geelong. When Varcoe was released for a massive loss, Geelong did the right thing for a player that should have been a rookie. However we were relatively stronger. Now with a weaker list, we will not be paying too high a price for a player that is not right.

The biggest issue here is that the saints have 750k tied into a player who can sit on the sidelines next year. This is simply a rubbish story. Stevens has accepted less cash contract if he gets to geelong. If the saints dont do the right thing here, he can simply not play and get paid for the next 12 months. Wells is realising being the good bloke carries no carry forward currency.

In regards to TK, this is so funny it is ridiculous. Comparable trades are there for all to see. Weller, Neale, shiels, treloar etc
This is not some picks +12. Because if wells accepts picks 12 and 20 he should be sacked. Geelong simply cant compromise its future time and time again.

We overpaid for Henderson, why? He couldnt get a game at the blues. A first round pick was used on a round 2 player. Geelong supporters need to remember Rivers provided greater service and cost nix, and Henderson cost $$$ and a high pick.

Wells is not being a dodoro but stating what everyone in the industry except wce supporters accept. If wce were not prepared to trade out a player or two to get this deal done, they should not have given him false hope. Maybe wce thought gaff was gone last year, and had a different hand, and this situation is spiralling out of control.
