I could see Kreuger playing in defense in 2021.
He is much the same size as Harry (although lighter atm due to youth) and like Harry is a left footer. He can also play at both ends as Harry has done at times.
Well the replacement can’t be any slower

Can we get something for Rohan?
He is a Barry Crocker
We need to take a step back to go forward but that wont happen sadly Rohan and Dalhaus still contracted for 1 & 2 years but would get rid of both if it was my choice...

Dalhaus sure has been a bit of a disappointment. Wasn't he a handy player for the bulldogs?

Yeah but think he played more onball his pace is a problem on our half forward line or lack of pace more to the point

If we get say Cameron, Higgins and Smith but lose Ablett and Taylor....are we a better team than this year?
*apologies this turned into a long post*

I would argue that the one that hurts us is Harry.

If we are going into the season structurally the same with Blitz on the wing/ruck then it's because DEK is best 22 in the backline. Now does he have the physical characteristics yet to not get pushed off it by the gorilla forwards? I'd say not yet. So if DEK is coming in he's playing maybe 3rd tall defender territory which is Kolos role but is 2m DEK going to be good enough at ground level work? Also probably not.

So I think what hurts us is that Blitz goes back to FB which he's very good at but really hurts us for that rotation off the ruck, can't sneak Stanley into fwd 50 etc. It's not all bad because Clark is an AFL standard wing and he is straight in for him, or maybe Higgins or Smith there, but I think we're going to find ourselves short on ruck stocks very quickly unless Sav can build his tank enough over preseason to play a full game chasing stoppages. Even if he did he's coming in to cover Stanley if injured not to rotate with him.

Ablett, once we're past the emotion of it, is easier to cover. Not in the sense that the footy world can churn out another GAJ because they obviously can't, but we can either play Higgins there in a low budget copy of what we had, or play someone with more ground level pressure. Of those choices i think the MC would prefer Higgins there but I think that's a mistake. With Cameron in for Rohan we're losing a bit of ground level pressure. Our ideal f50 would be something like:

Miers Hawk Higgins
Danger Cameron Dahlhaus

I think we'll see 2 things here. First even playing that forward line there's less ground level pressure than we've seen previously. Secondly if we do start to see issues in the ruck then I can see us start to lose midfield contests and Dangerfield is back to the middle full time. This means that we will probably need Close or Atkins permanently forward regardless. I think we're a much better side against undersized opponents in dry conditions and would potentially be worse than our current line up against a side like Richmond in the wet. There's an outside chance too that Camerons value is diminished at KP in less space

So in my view:
Harry for Clark > likely creates holes in the ruck but not much we can do
Ablett for Higgins > a downgrade but not awful
Cameron for Rohan > massive upgrade in the dry, creates a likely issue in the wet with lost ground level pressure

The one that keeps me up at night though isn't a list change, it's diminishing returns from Selwood. He peaked in 2018 I think and while he has been good the last two years it's a bit below where he was at. I think that we might need to consider transition away from captaincy and manage him the way Port did with Boak but they had Rockliff, wines, and SPP bashing in. It may be fine but I think we may see a real contested possession issue in the midfield. Still I think that's a 2022 problem more than anything

I think on balance you could argue better on paper but massive changes to line-ups sometimes have teething issues and it's probably pretty reasonable to think we don't work out the kinks in year 1. Unfortunately I think we'd be up against it to be better in 2022 so if we don't roll around again the way we expect then giving up picks for Cameron would in retrospect turn out to be a massive strategic error.

Im not on twitter or stuff like that .. I wish someone would ask media why they are deliberately in accurate.
Cornes says ... a 28 year old Cameron coming off a poor season is the same as a 26 year old Danger coming off a B&F... 2 years is a lot of games.
Then Edmonds brings up what Shiel etc got traded for ...ie 2R1 picks... never a mention of the full trade and what GWS gave with Shiel.
No mention of the so call side deal that I heard...

in spit of all that ... I still maintain P11 and our FR1 will probably get it done... if they convince a Narkle( or someone like that) to go with it then we should be getting something back ... maybe a Fr3 or something.

It will not be in Geelongs interest to let this fester.. although Idl love to see them throw a 1.5M at them for two years and see them say we match it... I doubt it happens
I think it will be better for the cats to let it fester. GWS are under far more time pressure given the number of trades they need to work through.

I’d trade Kolo. Him and Henry in the same team doesn’t work. Need more run like the Tigers have with Short and Houli. Clark needs to play.
Ok then who switches onto Martin last night and Cameron last week?

Not trying to defend Kolo but I think he is more important than people realise.

Agree we need to get smaller.

I don't think there too many out there that have his ability to play on either Charlie Cameron or the bigger boys. He's not perfect but he's developing well.

So do think the structure of the backline should stay pretty similar next year?

I’m not sure we have anyone. But that’s true for just about every other team too. It’s not about finding a matchup for Martin, it’s about getting more balance into our back six. To have O’Connor, Kolo and Henry in there as non key defenders is too much of the same I think.

Especially after last night... if we dont believe in our youth in what we have to take Ablett and Taylor's spot we have a problem... if we bring in a 32/33 Higgins in , instead of playing blokes like Clark,Constable, Narkle, Close... Why if we want to recruit young players would a young player want to come to our club...
Im not talking about Jeremy Cameron as he will hugely help us, im talking about a 32/33 Higgins...

God I hope we pass on Higgins. I don’t see too many 33 year olds playing good footy

Try and retain Narkle.

Give him, Fogarty, Ratugolea, Henry, Parfitt, Simpson and De Koning as much opportunity as possible to play next year.

Leave no stone unturned in search of a youngish ruckman.

Get a left-footer or two into the team.

Kreuger is a lefty.

I just don't see a gained advantage with replacing 30 something year old's with guys in their 30's.

We've done the old guy thing to death.

Ablett is gone, and I'd retire HT, send Hendo, Kolo and Dahl to VFL / depth only, and bring in Clark, Freddy, Sav, Close, Narkle etc.

Simpson should be a walk up start, and I'd give that Cameron guy a game if he turns up.

Our problem pure and simple is the midfield. Not good enough for a four quarter effort and get overwhelmed for at least a quarter where we are thrashed and can’t stop it. If we don’t have at least 2 or 3 younger faster hard types in there we will get the same results regardless of Cameron. HT and Gazza wage pays for Cameron, but we need to find a way to convert what’s left after the Cameron deal into at least one hardened clearance player. We also need at least one or two of Narkle, Constable or Stephens to improve and be a regular. Blitz was slow in the second half and Balta as the second ruck thrashed us and really dominated the third quarter. Perhaps Esava is going to be the second dynamic ruck but it’s taking too long. Blitz needs to go back and I think Krueger as well and Clark.
All this means I think we need to change at least 5 of the team from last night. Sick of minor adjustments they won’t beat Tigers. Let’s not mention game plan.
I have been critical of DalHaus all year, but credit where it’s due he took Houli out of the game last night which was a great job. I think Houli did his calf at some point. I think miers works hard but is so unreliable kicking for goals, and totally poor under pressure, that I think he needs pressure on his position and be dropped to develop, he showed last night he wasn’t mature enough. That play on for a point from in front was the symbol for me we were wasting our chances as usual.
get our new mids under the mentorship of Duncan, Menengola, and Guthrie (all sensational), and turn Joel into a part time coach cause his input is limited on the field now, and review his on field role because it noticably slows us down now So he has to relied on more as clearance ans defensive stopper. If he plays down back we get another issue with speed.
so, maybe Sav second ruck, Stephens and Narkle into mid rotation (ideally one other we get in), Clark and Krueger down back with SDK when he is ready but will probably be too light next year BUT the option he offers is to be the second ruck.
weve got an OK pipeline, plenty of draft capital ans retiring players for cash - need to be really ruthless at the margins here, and I really think we need to change 5 to 6 in total with the focus on midfield.

I don't want Higgins, even if I think we already have him, I'd replace Ablett with Close and just roll with it.
Likewise I'd say goodbye to Harry and Hendo and bring Blicavs back to full back and slot Clark in across the half back line (or Tuohy back there and play Clark in Tuohys role).
IMO there's only 1 player I want to bring in, Cameron. Nobody else we've been linked to would improve our team enough to warrant losing games we could put into younger players.
