I've got a theory that people care much more about the initial draft pick a player was drafted at than they should and that leads to frustration.

I reckon posters around here would feel very differently if we'd picked Miers up at pick 22 and Fogarty at pick 57. People would say Miers is a good pickup at pick 22 while Fogarty showed a bit for a pick 57, might or might not make it but we've moved him on for a pick upgrade. Overall a perfectly fine result.

People ignore that Miers at 57 is a great pickup and makes up for Fogarty being a poor pickup in hindsight and instead concentrate on another busted early pick. Yes Fogarty is disappointing but in recent times guys like Miers, O'Connor, Henry and Simpson look to be great late picks.

This is 100% true and I’m 100% guilty of this
The issue is around people taken around Fog there’s so many good sections afterwards, with a player like Miers there’s not that many.
Today’s a rough day for me because my 2 favorite kids in the past few years have been Cockatoo and Fog.
It hasn’t been a good day

Pretty average list build coming up. Cockatoo and Fogarty add to the already lengthy first round draft picks that didn't work out. Higgins and Smith coming in to push these guys out, really can't see the win here.

Since 2010 every man and his dog has predicted our club would be down and out. We can't afford to bottom out, as soon as we do, the AFL will have us moved to Marvel. Being in premiership contention year in year out is pretty fun as a supporter and member of the club. I'd much prefer our position to many in the league.

How do you explain the way people have reacted to Constable's treatment? He wasn't a high pick.

Most footy fans are obsessed by guys who get big stats and ignore the fact that playing midfield is the only way you can get big stats. No other player recently has played their early games as a full time mid (apart from the mature aged kelly) so some posters around here jumped to the conclusion that he was a gun and our best draftee in recent times. In reality he wasn't winning clearances, was being killed on the spread and his disposals weren't that damaging. Not saying he can't become a good player but posters around here got way, way ahead of themselves purely because he was given opportunities other debutants weren't.

The Fogerty trade isnt as bad as people are saying, we basically got pick 40 for him and likely get Higgins.

Out: Pick 38 - 465 Points + Fogerty

In: Pick 30 - 629 Points
Pick 51 - 259 Points
Total - 888 Points

888 - 465 = 423 = Pick 40

The best example to prove big stats are pointless.

No one ever tags Tom Mitchell, he’s one of the biggest ball winners in modern footy, he’s slow and would be one of the easier tags.
Why doesn’t a coach tag him?
Because he doesn’t hurt you

Having success with late picks and fail with early picks does , in theory, leave one with a less talented side... but I thin k its a syptom of not having enough top 10 picks . Fogarty at 22 was already in that range of players like Spriggs and Thurley...

Failures at 22 would not mean as much if we could add a couple of legit top 10 kids.

I have us with 5 senior spots less than last year, so taking into consideration the potential cutting of list sizes down 2 spots, we may see a few more go.

Constable is contracted, so only way he's not on our list next year if via a trade

Narkle, Jarvis & Zuthrie are the 3 waiting on decisions around list sizes as to what happens - Fogarty & Cockatoo being traded kinda helps, if Steven also retires it may also others to stay by open up a spot

How so? He has predominately played as a forward and played one good game against the bottom side in the middle, think you are overrating him big time, will be a bust at Carlton.

Eye of the beholder, so guess I would need a Carlton fans opinion, but Mick was well on the decline at the Blues.
Had perfected the floating helicopter kick just for them!

Comfortably top 3 in terms of performance at Carlton after being at Geelong though.....(Williams excluded as he went via Swans)

Not when we traded him to Carlton. He was cooked.
The draft pick we got for Mansfield was turned into Paul Capman.

Growing up as a kid he was just a favorite of mine, they way he played and his name.
Great upgrade to Chapman though

Fogarty wasn't seen to warrant an emergency spot, so he's down the pecking order a bit an not close to next best option outside of GF team

It's interesting to me how little our defensive-minded coach values midfielders with a natural defensive side to their game. It's been such a clear weakness in our side and is the main intangible benefit to playing Danger forward. Parfitt and Guthrie have been two but I thought Fogarty could be the third. Yet my read is that we're prioritising keeping Narkle, who is our weakest midfielder defensively, over Fogarty. Maybe Stephens offers a bit.

I expect him to go to North, that’s just my opinion.
They have stated they will top up through trade and draft.
Bringing in players and have currently had 1 trade

In my view yeah. I can't remember who the emergencies were, Atkins, Sav, Zuthrie and one other? None of those are midfield options. Out of the side were Narkle (one-way), Constable (unathletic, out of favour), Steven (bad), Stephens (1st year)... am I missing any? I think Fogarty was the best of those last season.
