Reaaly good article

Interesting that our 2021 draft gain is rated as about 65% of our 2020 loss. I don't really get how that can be true

What ended up happening with Jack Steven? Did he go or have list sizes stayed mostly the same and we'll go around again?
I Reckon they've told Jack you're a champ mate but we cant have you put GFC culture into disrepute by dishing up stabbings and flab. If you're willing to bring 100% fitness and effort in 2021 we want you there, so go and have a think and let us know pre final list lodgement.
If a fit and firing Steven joins Smith, Higgins, Guthrie, Duncan, Menegola, Parfitt, Selwood and the occasional Dangerfield in the middle, we are some force to be reckoned with.
I think maybe the same commitment is being asked of Narkle

I think he couldnt do another hub and it was looking that way until the last couple of weeks. But doubt he wants to put all the effort in if he is fit but not selected in the best 22 come finals

I could appreciate that but I don't think the drop in cap is necessarily the issue as there would be multiple teams in that position, there is something far more going on here. It might not even be cap related.

I also don't think the AFL would hang teams out to dry because of a cap reduction. If anything I could see the AFL saying okay well your only over the cap because of covid, don't worry about it. The $2m figure that they have dropped is a massive amount and just doesn't make sense.

I just don't see how they miscalculate by $2m.

Plenty of reasons why. As mentioned below by PO. They also expected Darcy Moore to leave to the swans last year. But he changed his mind.

They got caught out because they still have to pay beams the next 2 years..langdon is on big money but cant be medically retired as he is contracted..i think they wanted to push degoey out but after his police charges no club wanted to trade for him and no one wanted to take cox/thomas etc money off the books either so they simply had to trade whoever else clubs would take to stay under the cap.

I think they should just say it's time to go Jack. If he is flip flopping on whether he wants to play on next year, then I think that is a clear sign his head won't be in it. Nor do we really have a place in the 22 for him imo.

A lot of us spent most of last season wondering whether we were too tall down back... I think we're fine. Oscar McDonald is rubbish, Kolo or Henry playing tall are much better options.
Blitz can do the job but if he is not there in big games you can't possibly go with them on Charlie Dixon, Tom Lynch, Daniher, Kennedy, Darling, Hipwood, Max King. They just aren't big or strong enough.

Lets not be like Port and pretend and tell everyone its not a huge problem then recruit somebody post fact. They got saved by poor kicking and weather or they were in all sorts.

I'm not expecting some miracle in a rookie but I think Oscar McDonald could do the job physically. The Demons play the exact opposite style to us so he's worth a discussion. He also doesnt care about just locking down. I remember a mid 20's Tom Lonegan was worth half a Mars Bar. Jordan Roughhead, Alex Keith the list goes on and on. They are out there. Geez I'd even get McCartin in for a chat as he played some games down there.

What we do better than any team in the competition though is avoiding one on one contests with these big forwards. Harry's experience and strength is a loss but on the flipside you end up a bit more mobile. As the last guy on our list I wouldn't complain but I'd rather just get an 18 year old in on the off chance they become a long term player. Just like I'd rather have drafted a player over Jenkins last year.

Same, hope it’s a wake up call.
I find him a bit lazy, big off season & work hard at his game. Come back & be hopefully an improved player

Same for Constable - the lack of interest from other clubs will hopefully ignite a fire, and change the narrative from:

"Poor me, I'm not getting games at Geelong so I'll go elsewhere" to
"What do I need to do to become a regular seniors player, and show the 17 clubs who ignored me what they missed!"

He needs to have a big pre-season & take it from there next year - this is his chance to control the narrative in the next chapter of his AFL career

To be honest, I think Simpson has all but taken Steven's role - the HFF with midfield stints.

Except it will be for less than a second rounder if he can’t get a regular game in 2021.

Agree i can just see us chasing him again when hendo retires next year.

Steven is still good depth IF his head is in it and we would still be paying him if he retires anyway.

IF we change the way we play , which I do question a bit ..but its no good having a race car and only driving it to the shops , so if we change to a more frentic less concerned with an occasional turnover , then Steven could be a firecracker.
He may decide he is not up for the fight for a spot. If it was me ..seeing these guys come in, I'd be doing an all out effort to get in the best shape of my life. Strip every bit excess off me. Any player at Geelong worth his salt would think the a side that is loaded to take no prisoners , is one they would want to be a part of .. especially when if one that can see the sun's orange glow as it slowly drops below the horizon.

Jack played in some very dark days at st kilda and carried them he will want success and to work for it more than anyone. I suspect the decision will come down to 2 things..does he think his body is capable and more clarity around restrictions..i think someone with his personal issues might really struggle in a hub so whether or not they will exist might be a factor in him playing or retiring.

Not to mention Hawkins just won his first coleman at 32, nothing to stop Cameron from being the best forward in the league in 4 years time
Think they're very different types. Hawkins has never relied on athleticism or agility and so he hasn't diminished with age. If Jez's physical traits start to drop of will he be as good?

I am ecstatic and can’t comprehend the naysayers logic.

Once GWS matched the bid, best case scenario evaded us.

So, a new best case scenario arose and Wells did it.

To get Cameron in for late first round picks while making next year’s draft hand quite strong is a win/win.

I guess people are underrating Cameron maybe because of his bad year. Maybe because they don’t watch many GWS games. But finally we have an outright goal kicker in our forward line. I know Hawkins kicks goals but he doesn’t conjure them from nothing. Cameron is the first player on our list since Stevie J left who can produce magic in the forward 50 and create a goal from nothing. We’ve been lacking it for such a long time and he’s going to improve everybody in the forward 50. I am absolutely over the moon with this move.

Oh, and then to add in the class of Higgins on half forward... don’t worry about his age. Stop stressing about after 2021. Nobody knows what happens in 2022/2023/2024. What we know is we have an absolute A grade talent in Higgins coming in. And if he was 23 with his talent, we could never get him. So it’s a smart, shrewd move that fills a void that nobody else on our list could and very few in the league could.

Then Isaac Smith. He’s the icing on the cake to the icing on the cake that is Higgins. Come games at the MCG, his running, penetrating kick and line breaking will be absolutely massive. Again, we don’t have that talent on the list.

I will say one thing, Jordan Clark must start on the half back flank and we must drop a tall to accomodate him moving back and Blicavs moving back to fill in Harry’s role. And Dangerfield shouldn’t be a deep forward. He’s not a good enough kick for goal. He has to play high half forward and basically be an attacking mid/forward like Dusty. Up the ground around the 70/80 metre zone is where he’s most damaging and scary for oppositions.

This is the best 22 I envision:

O’Connor Blicavs Bews
Stewart Henderson Clark
Menegola Selwood Smith
Higgins Cameron Dangerfield
Miers Hawkins Dahlhaus
Stanley Guthrie Duncan

Tuohy Simpson Parfitt Kolodjashnij

Emergencies: Ratugolea Henry Close
