Yeah, but it's just a terrible look. How would you feel about a club that said:

"Nah, we're not gonna offer you a contract until we can see if we're better off keeping you or shipping you off"

Like, yeah, footy is a business and all that, but there's still a personal relationship element.

Surely even going "This contract is what we value you at. It's on the table, sign if you wish. No obligation, we won't be upset if you talk to other clubs" is a better way to go

Like mentioned before, much rather bundle up whatever cash we have for Crouch, and throw it at Marshall.
Ruckmen are a bigger need for our club. We have plenty of players who can get the ball and turn it over. Let's blow the cash on someone who will give us the first option rather than Crouch who often picks a poor option.

If we get both Crouch and Viney as free agents they'd have to change the rules. I'm starting to wonder if we're handing out brown paper bags.

We had a lot set aside for Kelly that we didn't spend plus Ablett and taylpr are retiring plus other retirements the next 2 years we have more space than people think. We will lose some fringe guys but it will be more for opportunities than cap space.

They want a flag and think that Higgins is a finisher and polished and if they get 1-2 years out of him, and it doesn’t cost much, why not.

Will we be in flag mode next year? I dunno. If this squad bombs again in finals then adding an ancient import from another club is not going to materially improve it.

This year has a 2015 off season vibe to it. If we can nail the trade period and draft, can set us up for a few more years at the top challenging for the flag, would be quite incredible if we can pull it off.

What's your best 22 should we recruit both of them, I can't fit everyone in. They're not the types who you'd play outside the primary midfield rotation.

If we get crouch and viney danger is clearly going to play mostly forward and sav will potentially either be in the ruck or out of the team. Higgins would be a winger or goalkicking HF. Backline composition is the unknown for me as is what we do with the 2nd ruck spot.

HB: Stewart Kolo Tuohy
C: Menegola Duncan Guthrie
HF: Higgins Hawkins Parfitt
F: Miers Danger Rohan
R: Stanley Selwood Crouch
I: Viney Dahl Steven/Clark Sav (or whoever ruck 2 is)

Backline could use an extra tall potentially but is experienced and quality. Mids have a good balance of ball hunters (crouch viney Selwood Parfitt plus danger and Steven when there etc) complimented by good outside ball users (Guthrie Duncan Menegola higgins). I'd like Clark to come through to give us some real line breaking ability.

Forward line has stacks of marking power plus speed (danger and rohan) guys like miers and Higgins can really finish and Dahl and rohan give you pressure.
The only real weak point is the second ruck spot unless Hendo holds up or we bring through another tall defender we will need to take blicavs and put him back which then means either sav or Jenkins needs to get a gig as 2nd ruck unless we bring in someone else for that role. I don't rate fort so we have no real cover if Stanley goes down.

Obviously depth depends which fringe players go but you would still potentially have Atkins Close CC Narkle Fogarty Zuthrie Simpson Jenkins and Stephens plus Hendo (if he doesn't retire) and our R1 picks this year as decent depth. I would argue with the exception of the ruck and key back positions that we would have really good depth across the park.

Am I missing something when I say that technically the Crows wont know what compo they will get for Crouch until they choose not match?
And by that stage its too late if you don't like what you get.

You're correct and sides still get surprised by being in a different band than they expected but certain information about it is known. They can back calculate and take a pretty well educated guess. The part that's hard to judge is the scaling system for age which appears to use groupings rather than a set ranking.

Rather than taking an arithmetic approach though you can play the stats angle. Since they last changed the system the only band 1 comp was for a million dollar player. There's been plenty of band 2 on contracts up to 700k.
