If we'd taken a bloke after he'd done a non contact ACL knee id still be deleting posts..

With CS, the break was minimal and healed non surgically. At this point, ill take that.

Remains to be seen what happens but given our history on drafting injured players, ill take the lesser of the two evils thus far.

GO Catters

I'm confused as to how a player with an ACL is somehow going to be more of a sure thing than the player who broke a leg & appears to have recovered

I get that Lang turned into bit of a bust, but didn't Kelly also break his leg but ultimately made a return & played an important role across our premiership years... Whose to say that CS won't be more Kelly like versus Lang like?

My take on your first paragraph is that you're questioning the assertion that an ACL injury is more likely to doom a player than a broken leg.......

If so, a couple of points:

An ACL incurred without physical contact implies an inherent weakness.... possibly one that can't be rectified without surgery, and the significant chance it'll happen again.

A broken bone however is said to be stronger when it heals than the original. And if it heals naturally, without surgical intervention...... Well, that's far more preferable.

Maybe I've just read too many post draft comments over the years and not sure there's too many selections where there's consensus that it was the right pick

The sceptical side of me thinks that regardless of taking Stephens or Kemp with our first pick, there would be a fair share of complaints about the selection, using our first pick on an injured player and that the other injured player would have been a safer option

For those interested, here are the players considered to be the top prospect in 2020's draft. I'm happy to update this as the year goes on, if there is interest.

Yep.

There'll be differing opinions in every crowd, and hindsight eventually clouds the debate even further.

Then there are the minority who complain for the love of it.

Kelly looked a better prospect than bartel and Ablett pre break. Not sure if that is the best example as he never looked the same when he come back

You don't need any you have 3 first round picks.

Thats a silly post. Several sides have had high level nga players..who they have drafted at a discount like TT at North for eg. having R1 picks has nothing at all to do with having a player tied to your club that you can draft at a discount. Id certainly like a player or two like Quaynor or Henry tied to us ... and if it gave us issues with our R1 picks..its a nice problem to have.

Nor do we have any good father/sons on the horizon. All while other teams acadamies are gold mines. We get sweet fa. The whole system is completely unfair.

Not sure you can exactly say that when you consider the success we have had from f&s picks over the past decade - pretty sure that most teams would have loved to have had access to even one f&s selection who'd have a career like Ablett, Scarlett & Hawkins have had, let alone access to all 3

Look at it as ebbs & flows of the system - just because we aren't reaping the benifits at the moment doesn't mean we haven't in the past nor that we won't in the future

F&S are one thing but academies are getting ridiculous soon 20-30 players every year from the top 50 or so will be discounted

I would have taken Robertson first up but are happy with Stephens. A few that have seen a lot more of him than me rate him highly so happy to run with that at this stage. Kemp’s knee rules him out for me with our first.

So I’d prob have gone Robertson and Gould, assuming that the Blues take Stephens with their first. If not it’s Robertson and Stephens to add some real grunt to our midfield. Take Finlay or Hilder later to bring in a Young KPD.

I preferred Robertson but knowing blues interest in kemp & CS id have picked kemp first to then get Robertson.
Knee is a risk but his talent at 17 or whatever it was was too good to pass up. Could be a top 5 player in the comp.

I like CS but to me we picked a guy who may not have the most talent but who will give his all. There’s nothing wrong with that and it means he’s a low bust chance. The only reason it leaves me a bit unmoved is that we lack young A grade mid talent. None on our list have anywhere the potential that a young joel did for example. They are all decent but nothing with superstar potential. I think it’s our biggest hole in our list for the future.

That may well be true with Cooper (being a safe bet) but maybe just maybe Wells didn't think that highly of Kemp and Robertson and thought that they are a higher risk for the same or less reward. Just because we think Robertson or Kemp would be better players eventually don't mean anything atm i mean Watts went at umber 1 .........

What about Tambling or Toumpas - both went top 4 and not sure either lived up to that billing

I think its fair to ask..are we leaving the emergence of talent from our NGA area to just nature or are we encouraging development. Just how much talent is in the area allocated is probably something for the club to calc and report to the afl.... but the whole concept is supposed to be about talent development ..not about a defacto zone.

This is from an article earlier this month - updated info on the club website about the NGA:

Further to this, under AFL Academy Guidelines, the club has been allocated regions of Barwon in Victoria (aligned with TAC cup region of the Geelong Falcons) and East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, from which Academy participants can be recruited from.

To participate in the Geelong Cats Next Gen Academy program, you are required to register your details. Once registered, you will receive an information pack about which program is right for you.

I'm curious how active is the club in recruiting participants - do they actively scout potential talent (similar to keeping an eye on potential draftees) where they encourage youngsters to register their interest or do they take more of a backseat approach to that side & the involvement is only after being accepted into the program?

There was another article earlier this year from April:
The Next Gen Program will consist of four different groups:
  • Under 16 Girls
  • Under 14 Girls
  • Under 15 Boys
  • Under 14 Boys

So maybe it's something the club reviewed after last season and acknowledged they could do more work with and from a younger age - if that's the case, we may start to see benefits in a few years when those under 14s & under 15s start to reach draft age

Allow me...

First, start with the word Geelong.
Second, follow with a randomly selected negative verb e.g. botched, ruined, underachieved, stuffed, tanked, etc etc

Easy peasy!
You should have seen how pathetic our first attempt at getting a female team.

We are just not that active with our academy.

Without knowing what all the other clubs are spending... the afl probably have a recommended number... and if we spend that and still do not even get a rep player for the u18's then we probably have ammunition to petition the afl for a change of some sort..

?

Our first season with a womens team at any level was the 2017 VFLW season and we finished 5th with 8 wins & 6 losses

Thought that was a pretty good, solid effort from an inaugural team
