I might be missing something, but I don't understand why they can't take the compo pick and then we do a secondary trade that favours them (without reaching draft-tampering levels)? That could work out for both teams.

Lets say a deal that makes it work out better for them than they would normally get..as long as they take the comp pick. It would have to stand up to scrutiny ..and a comp pick will push everyones pick back..no one likes that...but if they could find a way to do that then yes...why waste a pick.

Clark is contracted and worth more than pick 10.
I woukdnt trade him anyway.
I would want a very good reason to trade him...and then a deal that involved an upgrade this year and a FR1. If we trade out a player like Sav then we will not need to trade him. How much would his Y3 contract be? 280-300?

I dont see GWS as a good fit for Sav anyway.

We agree to disagree on this but lets not get bogged down on our opinion.. its only GWS opinon that counts. Do they want him as part of a deal? If so then its a ..would we trade him as part of the deal if he wants to go? Anyway just another thing to observe as it plays out

It's a problem with GWS and their apparent demands for players.

Where exactly does Sav fit in? They have Riccardi, Finlayson, Himmelberg in the forward line and now Pruess in the ruck.

Why is Sav agreeing to a trade where they were dropping some of those forwards throughout the season. Doesn't make sense to me.

For Parfitt it's the same deal. Tom Green who performed so well - and who they gave up so much just to get ahead of a bid last national draft - can't even cement a spot and he's supposedly the future of their football club.

Doesn't make sense to me

They are losing several mature players .. I presume that they are wanting to go away from just adding picks all the time. There seems quite a question that Cameron signals that they need to rebuild a bit .. if so ..one would think picks would appeal...so im not sure either apart from wanting to cause pain.

SOS said they should target Sam Dek..said they should have a look at our list .. so they are not alone in thinking that players should be part of the deal.
Thing is this is not usa sports, players have to want to go.

Herald Sun reporting Geelong will call the Giants bluff and let him slide through the preseason draft if they won’t take the compo pick. For all the hype, he’s 28 next year. No way the Cats are giving up 2 first round picks for a full forward who may not play any longer than Hawkins.

Be happy to think you are right.. I suspect they like to see GWS reasonably happy... Last year with Kelly ..and if you are correct this year with JC it shows a strengthening of our approach to trade

The word I have on Sav is that he’s unhappy at geelong. Has senior players into his. Constantly about his less than amazing work ethic and the reason he’s inconsistent is his poor work ethic/laziness. Don’t be surprised to see him moved on.

So perhaps a pick and Sav ?....

Make sure we do the Cameron Deal 1st

Pick 11 + Sav + 2021 2nd Round

Cameron + GWS 2020 3rd

If Clark wants to go to Freo

Clark + GWS 2020 3rd

Pick 10

That way we keep our noses in front of GWS in the draft

In - Cameron Pick 10
Out - Sav Clark + Pick 11 + 2021 2nd Round

Must make sure that Cameron is signed off and then open negotiations with Fremantle and not before other wise GWS come for both Pick 10 + Pick 11

Cameron+Fr3 (pick in the 50's) for P11 and Sav and Fr2 ( probably something in the late 30's early 40's)

If the club can arrange this would they do it? I guess it depends on how hard they want to push the "you will get nothing line" . As Rendel said recently ..it seems SWells like deals to be win/win ..so maybe . P11 is the pick Id prefer to keep. History has shown we will pay a certain amount to complete a deal.

P10 <> Clark+gws FR3 ...

I presume it is to replace the P11 ..but to me Clark for P10 alone is not enough ..without adding to him. He is contracted for two more years ..we do not have to trade for unders just because he had a soft year , he may bounce next year and star. Add that P10 is probably P12-P14 plus once you add comp picks and bids. Is the player we draft potentially better than Clark ? If by trading him we got ten, we keep 11 ..and we trade into an earlier picks then maybe I could see a reason to do it. Maybe

Jye Caldwell according to Tim Watson wont be at St Kilda or GWS next year, also suggests Essendon are no certainties.

Are we still a chance ???

He wasn’t even in his prime this year. He had a poor year. There’s no guarantee he’ll get his form back.
He was coleman winner last year. This year the whole team was crap, and he was unhappy being screwed out of at least half a million dollars.

He will have no problem finding form. Talent just doesn’t disappear. If anything he will probably become a better player at a good club like ours. It was actually one of the reasons he gave gws for leaving, by saying he thinks we will make him a better player. Gws have a poor culture and standards. Players are just in it for the money, and personal accolades.

He is 23 Not 20. He aint need any developing.
I know patience is a word you despise.. but learn it anyway.

Sav just needs more time and work. You need a little.. ( insert guns and roses music video here)

Go Catters

Did Brad Crouch pick St Kilda over Geelong ? Or did Geelong withdraw offer?

It’s quite possible you’re right and obviously I hope you are. I’m just saying there are no guarantees.

As I’ve said elsewhere, there was optimism about Mitch Clark. He was a different case and there were clearly risks attached to hm, but things can go wrong. Have a look at Bradley Hill at St Kilda this year. He may come good but had a poor year.

That’s why I’d be loathe to give two first rounders for him. Sounds like the club won’t, which is good.

There would be several players who like hub life..and others who hate it and their form is consequently affected. Id imagine its just like when very talent indigenous footballers struggle with a different environment. One would think he would have had a good look at what we offer..and where he would fit in... he could easily return to kicking his normal type numbers.
This year is possibly his worst ever. ..24 goals from 17 games , in 2019. it was 76 goals from 24 games. If he can add that while not reducing Hawkins out put..it would seem a big increase in our scoreboard pressure

I have not heard us liked to Caldwell.. have you ? I suppose now that we have let Crouch go elsewhere..we may have an interest in a mid

If they match the deal he has to sign the contract doesn't he? 🤔 Or does he remain uncontracted and refuse to sign it? 🤔
How many clubs would be able to afford him who could take him before us since we'll have pick 17 or 18

Is this where clever accounting comes into it where we frontload

If they match he isn't forced into signing with them. He just loses FA rights and becomes like every other uncontracted player.
Hence why there is talk of trading.

My guess is Geelong's offer was a lot less lucrative. We might have told him it could be upped if Cameron said he wasn't coming which is why his choice came out after the Cameron news.

Its all rubbery as its never been done. My assesmengt would be ..the match and then the player decided to accept that match or decide to proceed with a trade. If they match they cant withdraw that matched contact

Well its a contract offer. He can choose to sign it and stay or choose not to and be traded / or go to the draft.
So it is a risk from the team matching the offer if they aren't prepared to pay that amount in the first place, as he may stay. And you are correct they cannot withdraw it.
But if a player wants to leave for any reason other than money they wont be signing it.

Exactly! And I hope Wells is moving them towards this option. It's entirely possible too, because unlike some other clubs, we do our trading and negotiating behind closed doors, not through radio interviews and press releases.

Once the dust settles do you think this will end up being the end result?
Take the compo and we'll work something out. Or do you think we'll stick to our guns now they want to play this out in the media

On a side note i think it was Cook that said the club is constantly approached by agents to get players to Geelong, do you expect any other players to come in that we haven't been linked with in the media? 🤔

I think it depends on what other moves we make but i think we will want compo and a side trade with them that makes the most sense to me. Whether our fallback option is then a trade or to make the offer so so high that they cantmatch i dont know.

But i think we will be working on bringing in other players too not just crouch and higgins.

About that id say which gives us no financial incentive to tradeclark. Keep him for another 12months unless they put brayshaw on the table (which they wont).

Xoh was one but i assume they haveenough cap room to retain him now withallthese departures.

Make sure we do the Cameron Deal 1st

Pick 11 + Sav + 2021 2nd Round

Cameron + GWS 2020 3rd

If Clark wants to go to Freo

Pick 10

If that was the deal, wouldn’t it be better for GWS not to match and get pick 9 or 10 (which would make our pick 13) and just trade Sav to them for a future 2nd separately. That mean they take pick 10 to the draft instead of pick 12 (if they didn’t match and we traded) for the sake of a future 2nd instead of future 3rd... would keep some goodwill in GWS favour also
