ah was thinking he was at GWS longer but as mentioned he was with Sydney. Probably unfair to judge based off that anyway as he arrived right at their time of decline.

one of his first tasks once an assistant coach at GWS was to go to the meetings with Cameron & help to convince him to stay rather than join Geelong

Well, we know Cameron joined Geelong so his first task didn't go as the club would have hoped

Getting bont would equate to getting Danger 5/6 years ago... The unlikely hood of getting him, shows how rare the chance was off getting someone like Danger, a guy at his peak , close to the best in the afl.

If getting Danger was list defining as CS said, when he starts to slide, which may have already started to happen, we will notice a building demand for his replacement. Be nice if that could come from a second round pick somehow...or even any pick at all. WE do well with the picks we have, but I am resolute that the lack of single figure draft picks will eventually erode our lists quality.

The chance of of being able to draft someone as highly rated as Danger or Bont is so rare, take the draft that just happened, which outstanding gun kids would have said might have been capable of being that list defining mid player? Maybe Hollands or Phillips... hard to say. Does anyone know really what we have Holmes. Lets hope he is a top player but there has to be some question compared to the more known commodities.

So , the club does what it did last year attack known commodities, that are in system, a practical solution but hardly long term solution.... meanwhile were were beat in the GF by Martin, a player drafted at P3 by Richmond.

Its a conundrum that , I cant see changing till gravity finally wins its inevitable socialistic battle.
I remember saying it a few times after the TK trade that you get a player for less when you have less. Even without a 1st we still have a strong hand. I'd take everything we have to the draft this year, trade up using the 2022 first as well. Then in 2022, with only a 2nd/3rd/F1st start start hitting up a decent RFA from a side that will take the compo. We will have the cap given the number of guys we'll have retiring then and we'll know what we need for 2023 which is our danger year I think

Not bad options.

I am surprised that there has been no kick back about the FRA being matched, my bet that when it happens to someone else, the AFLPA will ensure the FRA is a dodo

they seem to have a bit of ill feelings towards us which I don’t think geelong recipricates.

probably a combination also of the feelings of pressure to achieve a flag with that initial gold mine of talent they got handed which they feel is slipping from their grasp right now.

I truly think Leon Cameron is a very poor coach. To achieve as little as he has with that group of talent has been quite a failure. I don’t think he will be there past his current contract.

If Steve Johnson is quality, they might groom him to take over the reins.

Reckon we're really interested in Merrett. Hawk gets along great with him due to their country roots/hosting country games, has leadership material, star player, and very close to leaving if things don't improve. Would be a perfect Selwood replacement, and would cost far less than Bont IMO.

Also, Hawk showing his cards with answering Merrett twice for footy nous and best kick - obvious that Hawk would definitely love him here

Cameron is a terrible coach. Dropping Cogs was one of the stupidest, most demoralizing decisions a club could make. Then they pulled an Adelaide and told Corr he wasn't welcome at the end of season function, which apparently derailed them even more (according to Heath Shaw). Complete dog's breakfast when it comes to culture and environment. I just hope that means we see Bruhn and Fleeton in the hoops in a few years time

Would be 26 by then, yeah?

Happy to recruit him if we delist 2 x 25+ yo's, and bring in Merrett plus someone under 25.

I could see Menegola being involved as that big bodies mid they need, especially if Clark smashes it this year. Menegola, another fringe player and whatever picks need to be added in

Not so sure.......I think he increased his value in the eyes of the MC last year

that mark and 55m goal under immense pressure in the last quarter showed something I feel a lot of us felt menengola didn’t have.. that extra bit under pressure.

he isn’t going anywhere for my liking

I'd be surprised if he was put on the table, but he needs to back up last year's form too

I also would be surprised if he was looked at as an exit option, after last year's surge in form.

Having said that, if they thought they could actually get Merrett through the door, I could see them looking at a deal. Zach is a seriously talented player and will be just the type we need as our list transition continues.

I wouldn't want to see him go, but also he's a mature age pick up who has been a part of our pay structure from day dot. He can't have earned his true worth in dollars. If he gets an offer from a cashed up side that sets him up a bit better we probably owe it to him to let him go. He's earned the choice

what price should we/would we pay for Merett?? Essendon wouldnt do a straight swap for menegola. They would want probably a first rounder on top of menegola, or see it as inappropriate to be involved in the trade deal given his age, and may simply demand 2x firsts for Merrett.

depending if we are still pushing for a flag in the next 2-3 years, we should be cautious giving up multiple firsts as a price

That was a great kick by Sam and a great mark (although at a huge price in ‘friendly fire’ - Simpson may spend the bulk of 2021 getting over the shoulder injury and possibly the concussion. I hate to think the score line in the GF without Sam and Gryan Meirs - just about our only good players after half time).
Sam was a revelation last year but I’d like him to back it up again - his lack of pace means he has to play at that level in other aspects.

WRT the question of Trade Bait ( for Merrett) - we have a very good younger list now and won’t be able to play all in the next two years so a number will want to walk. Stephen Wells can then package up the return picks to a top 10 equivalent.

He RFA. If Essendon tank then we just give a band 1 offer. If they don't then don't recruit him.

Extremely doubtful Menegola is going anywhere at seasons end unless something dramatic happens this year

He was due to be out of contract at the completion of season 2021 and would have been an UFA - could have walked to any club he wanted & nothing we could have done about it

Instead, he signed a 2-year extension in November last year - that's not the sign of a player who's looking at or open to moving clubs at the end of this season; if he was considering his options going forward he wouldn't have re-signed, instead just waited to see what played out

It seems like we are not willing to put it to players with that sort of criteria. If we were harder, perhaps I could see us frame our recruitment like that. A harder recruitment policy ..would we have traded 3 R1 picks for one year of Cameron?
If fear if we chase him, and we tell him we will make it happen, we would end up trading picks from this year and next ..because Ess know that we will do that type of deal.

They could finish Bottom 6 though, which would be a Top 6 pick from compo. So it would be either that, or our Ess and Giants Picks 24 and 28ish, plus a Future 1st - 14-18. Not sure that's better than Pick 6 or so.

We don't have the same draft collateral as we did with Cameron, given we traded out our Future 1st this year for Holmes (who knows maybe they did that on purpose so that clubs couldn't pull the same crap again citing our strong draft hand?)

Either way, I'm not really fussed as 7 years of Merrett would be better than anything we would get at any of our mid teens/mid 20's picks in 2021/2022

All true. The lower they finish would have an affect on matching. If they finished near bottom, and a comp pick earned then a pick in a pick in the first 5 , so they had , P4 and P5 for eg, it would have to be a careful consieration, especially after Daniher.

In view of Essendon’s hardline approach to trading, they will ask for the world and I don’t know if we can afford to give up our draft picks again.
Perhaps once bitten twice shy over Daniher. Our draft hand couldn't match a top 7ish pick anyway. Merrett is good enough to be a free agent pick up but I don't even think we'd bother if Essendon were going to match

I think Cameron is the kind of player we'd go for no matter what, merrett isn't. I'd wait to see where they finish and if they have a good 1st then put the scenario to Dodo first and Gauge his reaction.

If it at all looks like he'd match then I wouldn't even talk to Merrett, let alone make him any promises. He's good, but not worth a massive trade.
