Not last two years at all, Danger was AA captain last season and Guthrie was in the team too, so I’m not buying the narrative that we don’t have A grade mids. All of Danger, Guthrie and Duncan were injured for large periods this year, have a bit of luck next year and they’ll still be a grade mids.
Too old to peak in September though.

Not quite.

There's enough good players and it just requires the MC to actually make some tough decisions in who they play (no more playing the old blokes if they do not perform and actually play players based on good form).

Talia if fit would hold it open a little longer - I have always liked him down back. A mid or two that is more in the 24-27 bracket to add energy and drive. A fit Stewart. A fit Dangerfield (slimmed down version please) and a change of game play (there are other things of course) could very well see us up and about again.

It's not all doom and gloom. Geelong has been, for quite some time now, a very proud club that prides itself on pushing towards being great. Tweaks will potentially get us there or near abouts again.

We got smashed in 2010 and we responded in 2011 ... who knows hey?
Another year older, and our gun midfielders are already just about cooked. We just don't have the midfield power to be able to seriously contend anymore.

We do need to inject some youth, and it might keep us playing finals, but we are simply way way too far off the best teams to be able to turn it around. Would be a different story if most of our best players weren't over 30, and declining in front of our eyes.

No it's not. He's had injury issues but Dangerfield over the last 2 years hasn't been in our top 5 players overall. They had similar years last year but Duncan's finals series was awesome.

This year they've both had injury problems but Duncan was in great, consistent form until injury this year. He also came back and had a better finals series than Danger. Danger played 3 or 4 great games against ordinary teams but ultimately showed no consistency and (again) didn't do much when it counted.
FFS he was in the all australian team last year, stop saying the last two years! Geelong only finished top 4 last year off the back of some Dangerfield heroics.

We have tried to move Selwood away from midfield before and it doesn't work. It is midfield or retire for Selwood. He was very poor in the prelim. I don't know if he was trying to play on the defensive side without Parfitt / O'Connor but he was all at sea and torn to shreds by Petracca regardless.

Correct - Sel is a MF and really only that. But he's also no longer the #1 or 2 Mid... he's the 3rd. And thats ok, provided the other 2 are doing their thing.

And it wasnt happening. And Trac was running rings around most people that night - size and power wise PFD on Trac made more sense IMO but PFD would have to wrk defensively and... well... we all know how that goes.

Atkins was tried but never stood a chance really.

Trac just too good. Selwood needs help.

MORE CHANGES AT CATS AS SHAKE-UP LOOMS
Lachie Henderson and Geelong are both taking time to consider whether the veteran defender plays on next year as the Cats look set to lose another assistant coach.

Corey Enright on Friday moved on from the Cats and landed at St Kilda, only days after fellow assistant coach Matthew Knights moved to West Coast.

Saints footy boss Simon Lethlean said Enright would be a key addition to the club’s AFL program.

Geelong was keen for Henderson to play on but their dramatic flame-out from the finals and his quiet September form might influence a decision.

Nathan Kreuger is just one of the key position players waiting in the wings for chances, as is the club’s No. 19 pick from the 2019 national draft, 200cm tall Sam De Koning.

There is a feeling the Cats need to change things up and formulate a plan for the years ahead that could involve blooding younger kids at the expense of early-season success.

As Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling said this week, the club needs to find a way to get games into midfielders like Cooper Stephens so they are ready to fire by the finals next year.

Quinton Narkle will stay at the Cats given there are no suitors, while Charlie Constable is keen to get more chances but can’t find another home either.

That's got a lot to do with the 'in their prime' part of what you're replying to though. If all your mids are 30ish you are going to get more frequent and more serious injuries.

The weird thing is that's not what happened this year.

Our older players Selwood, Smith, Hawkins, Tuohy and Henderson between them barely missed a game through injury until Tuohy did a hammy on the eve of finals. They all had pretty good years albeit better in H&A than finals. Danger had the worst run of those guys but he's also the youngest.

The main issue was guys in the 23-30 age bracket. Duncan, Stewart, Cameron and O'Connor all were badly injury hit. Parfitt was injured in finals. Atkins had back issues in the lead up to finals and didn't look the same player on return. Simpson barely got on the field. Miers had 2 leg fractures. That's an awful run of injuries and not at all focused on our older players.

I think Selwood could play the role that Atkins is playing now
He could, but I don’t see the benefit of playing him at halfback.

With all due respect, half-back is where you can put players who don’t work out in other roles. Hunt was a rover, as was Atkins. Mackie and Varcoe were forwards. Enright would have been a great midfielder but was squeezed out.

I would vastly prefer to see Holmes or Clark played at halfback to seeing Selwood shoehorned in there just to keep him in the team.

And yet that year when he did play on the wing (2019) was the best-balanced version of Geelong since 2011.

That said, I don’t think he was so much poor as just well-beaten.

Which assistant do we look set to lose?

Enright is old news

Is anyone that surprised by the last line of the article pasted above?

"Quinton Narkle will stay at the Cats given there are no suitors, while Charlie Constable is keen to get more chances but can’t find another home either."

Haven't there been reports the past couple of trade periods of Constable being open to a new home for more opportunities but for 3 years we're yet to hear anything solid regarding interest from potential suitors

As for Narkle, wonder if there ever really was 5 potential suitors as said by Carr and Narkles late season form turned them cold or if there was never any suitors? Sign him on a one year deal and see what he brings to the table - this past season we saw what he can bring when switched on & playing to his potential, but we also saw games of peak frustration that even had opposition supporters questioning his game

It's not realistic to expect him to play at the GC game level every week (though it would be great to see), but he needs to reduce the gap between that match and the lack of effort we saw against GWS

I'm happy if Constable stays at Geelong 😃

Its the Rhys Stanley syndrome... the gap bw the best and the worst is FAR too great. Dont need to be at the best all the time.. but must close the gap b/w the worst and the middle.. and lift the bottom line higher.

Thats the challenge IMO

What about luke dunstan, he is a free agent. He could replace or lessen the load in Selwood.
If we got him, brandtner , picks 30,32,34 in that is a reasonable trade period, makes us hopefully better and a fraction younger. Without trading players like Jeremy Cameron or Tom Stewart ( I would guess most valuable trade assets) what else can we do in one off season. Or would Jack Billings be a better option? I dont think so, but will happily defer to the clubs and most of big footys better judgement.

I'm happy if Constable stays at Geelong 😃

He's already got his Bankers Guernsey, though he may need a new number if he's only signing with our VFL team

Things may change, but not sure Constable will be on an AFL playing list next season
