There is something rally wiffy about this draft...to many ealy picks getting traded ...
It is as deep as a tea spoon for quality young players i'd say.
I've heard it said and read many times.
I will say it again, picks between 5 and 15/20 are much of a muchness to me.
If we can trade back with extras this year or futures we shall be doing well.

They can because they have taken mcasey thilthorpe and rachele as r1s within the last 4 years. So long as they trade in a future 4th (which wouldnt be hard to do) they can.

McAsey on leave...looks like that is flushed early R1. If anything it shows that picking someone like Clark has its upside.

And even that isn’t simple as if you have 1 or two free agents lined up the very last thing you want is multiple round 1 picks.

The two free agents that stand out are locals Parish and Doedee. You could see both those clubs threatening to match and demanding multiple first rounders if we had them.

Its a fair point on Restricted FA's.... although if either of those clubs thought they would lose a player to a band one offer I doubt they match next year. Thing is do we need either of them. It will be an ongoing discussion on what we do next year. I suspect dfa's may play a part

I hope we are targeting McKay as a RFA.

If he gets a big enough offer North would likely not match as him going would net them a very very early pick in a good draft (Frawley style).

You would think that McKay would be keen on moving to a decent club as well... So I see him as a real chance to leave (maybe not to us.. but just outta Norf).

In the end, getting any decent free agent will be a bonus so hopefully we are right into a couple of the good ones.

It would be an even bigger bonus if we can get our free agents for nothing like all other clubs seem to be able to.

I suspect we may have 3 or 4 retirements next year and the young blokes on the list will get an extra year to show there worth. Doubt we will make 8-10 changes with no picks.
Don’t agree on the young blokes. If I was Whyte, Kroger and Willis Id be very nervous. If you are looking at what went wrong this year that was a complete wipeout. The latter two have been more than a one year wipeout. I’m not writing them off at all but it’s a an enormous year for them. We have shown more recently we are prepared to cut and run.

If Sav, Menegola and Sammy don’t play more than 8-10 games they are more likely than not gone.

ISmith, Ceglar, Tuohey would be greater than 50% chance of retiring. That’s with a few other being one injury away - Hawkins, Stanley and Duncan.

Agree with all but Dunc, as he's signed until 2024 and still playing elite footy. Hawk may bow out or continue on his merry way - that one's a mystery, probably even to him at this stage.

Rohan is perennially injured, so he retires end of next year as well IMO. This gives us Smith, Tuohy, Stanley and Rohan as retirements next year...possibly Menegola too, but I think he could also have a revival too...just depends on how his injury troubles go.

At a totally random hypothetical guess, I'd have something like this happening end 2023:

2024 Future 1st for TDK and Future 2nd...after he doesn't get as much gametime this year and we finish 5th or 6th.

Pick 12-18 used at the 2023 draft.

Future Carlton 2nd from TDK trade on traded for 2nd in 2023 draft.

2023 2nd used in 2023 draft.

Menegola traded to rebuilding team like the Roos for a 4th.

Use 2023 4th in draft.

Tuohy, Rohan, Stanley and I. Smith all retire to make way for new blood (Mullin, O. Henry, Conway, Knevitt etc.).

5 out and 5 in:

TDK, Pick 12-18, 2023 2nd, 2023 4th, Pick 97 (Pick 65ish)

************

Again take all that with an absolute grain of salt, but an example of what could happen in terms of retirements and incoming players. One thing is for sure though- there will be nowhere near as much turnover as this year or previous years, as we have barely any draft capital so we might as well retain those on our list for an extra year.

May delist one or two like a Whyte, Simpson, Kroeger etc and then pick up a FA or two if there's too many issues injury/form wise. Could also trade a player like Sav if he wants out again. Whoever we trade or delist though, we'll still have limited picks so the retirements/delistings won't be massive, IMO.

It really depends if we like a slider, or we rate someone just outside top 10.
I mean getting Hewett or Ginbey as well ain't that bad, they seem to have the tools to make it.
Then getting another crack just outside top 15, for next best.
But agree, would rather get someone like Humphrey, Phillipou, Clark.
I just can’t see us having a specific person in mind and if they aren’t available then trading down
There’s going to be more than 1 very handy footballer left between Clark, Humphrey, Ginbey, Phillippou and Busslinger at our pick
I do think you will find it’s going to be 100% one of those players who becomes a GFC player.

I suppose Sam Gilbey, the chap who had glandular, will go well before our second pick: he looks very promising.

Re comments above about changes to the team: we won the flag with the oldest team ever. Meanwhile we've recruited a lot of talent - or al least we all hope that's the case.

Thus we're in a position that is unprecedented so far as selection, injury management and managing expectations are concerned.

As one pointed out above, some of our GF heroes are arguably one injury away from the end. It's conceivable we could play off next year with 4 or 5 different faces in the team. Bowes, Bruhn, Henry, Neale, maybe even Mullin if his deeds match his reputation, will all be expecting to get a few games next year, and some of them may go past their equivalent in the current team. And then I'm hoping to see Dempsey get some AFL time and maybe even Willis.

This will all be fascinating in itself.

Agreed. No ragrets as they say lol.
Seriously, i think Bowes alone was a good get.
I was hoping we'd be able to land him for our first this year when I first heard about him coming...then to hear we were getting him for nothing, AND getting GIVEN a shot at someone like Jhye Clark...still blows my mind how god like this whole trade period ended up being.

There's a reason basically every pundit and sports website had us as the clear winner of trade period...given we gave up one late first rounder and a couple of second + useless picks...to land 3 first round talents and a top 10 pick

You are real giving type hoping to hand over a first rounder for a guy playing VFL for the GC.

Happy it worked out the way it did. Easily the greatest trade discrepancy ever.

Trading back and getting Hollands could also land us his brother in the future. Still can't believe the Suns won't take him and unite the brothers. Thought they were mad not taking the King brothers a few years ago for the same reason.

Its why I think it won't be long until he heads to St Kilda, the club he supported, to play with his brother, when if GC had taken both of them the odds of staying likely increase.

Hard to go past Brisbane as the #1 winners this off-season - but I'll settle for 2nd or even 3rd, especially when this time of year is when the Bomber usually "dominate".

Haven't the King's said they prefer not to play in the same side?
