How do we possibly have the cap to do this? Stengle dekonning close atkins are all due much bigger coin going foward.

geelong has always priortised minimising payments over draft picks.

doesnt sound right to reverse this approach and pay bowes 850 thousand in the reserves just to get pick 7.
We'll likely never pay him $850k in a single season. He will come here on an extended deal with that money plus say 2 extra years at a significantly reduced salary spread (or back ended) over 4 years.

So what would he be worth on $850k per year? Pretty much nothing. Maybe pick 80? A token gesture at best.
So you think Bowes on 850k is worth something?

It's like selling someone a $50 note for 2x $50 notes.

He is worth less than nothing on his own and for 2 years on 850k.

My calculations add up to about a minus pick 7 negative value.

The missing link is here.

He is not worth nothing on $850k, it's worse than that - he is actually detrimental to their list management strategy and they have to get rid of him in order to take on other players. They cannot even give him away for free because other clubs do not want to put themselves in the same bind.

Not many clubs have a spare $850k laying around, nor the certainty that they can open up space in 2 years time with a bunch of retirements looming like we do.

GC see him as dead cap being spent on a VFL player. We see him as a possible reclamation project that comes with an almighty sweetener.

If he chooses us, they are over a barrel.
I haven’t missed that, but yes it’s relevant.

But nobody can say with a straight face that the cost of taking on that salary is pick 7. That’s absurd. It’s something between pick 7 and zero and we can argue about the detail. I’m guessing GC will push for something close to 7. You might say it’s less than that but it won’t be far off.

No I said nothing (or close to it) didn’t I? Maybe slightly negative value. Nothing close to pick 7 though. That’s way overrating the value of cap space.

This isn't going to be a fair deal for them. They are in a bind and only have so many ways out. That is the only reason we are getting involved.

I think that remains to be seen. I don’t think they are in salary cap “trouble” so to speak. They want to create space because they’re no good now but have players who will need a pay day in future.

Hawk could play forever. Doesn't rely on speed, his kicking is good and he's still monstering defenders and rucks in contests.
As long as we have mids good enough to get it to him he looks ageless.
I'd also suggest that having a player like Cameron along side him in the forward line will help to extend his career as he's no longer playing something of a lone hand

Don't think we should underestimate how much the partnership they've formed in that forward line will be helping the other

Bowes (a guy playing VFL at the Gold Coast) on 850k for 2 years is maybe a slightly negative value?

You pulling our legs here?
This isn’t Jordan Murdoch we are talking about. He can actually play.

salary cap is a fixed resource. Any gap you have now can be used to front load contracts giving you extra space in the future.
That’s pretty much what I said.

Might wanna tell the GC that... He is playing in their magoos & they could handle some more decent players.

And I know he had surgery, but he has been playing week in, week out since R6... so he has had plenty of time to lock a spot in that below average side if he was good enough. He did get back into the AFL side and was sent back to the VFL.

He is ok/solid... a real fringe player type at Geelong.

If the club that he goes to gives back a 1st rounder I will tip my hat to you... And lol at the club that does it.

So much water to go under the bridge anyway... He might not even nominate us.

Bowes would be crazy to nominate us IMO. Much better chance of establishing himself in the best 22 at one of those other clubs that are mentioned as being interested (Hawks, Bombers etc).

I can't see him wanting to come here when it's safer for his career to go elsewhere.
