That is 100% what I never want to see again
People forget we were playing with all of J.Henry, Ratugolea, SDK and Kolo at times this year. And we have Guthrie plus maybe someone like Clark or Knevitt to add to the midfield group this year.

Structure wise it wouldn't surprise me if at times they had Blicavs taking a tall and Henry as the free interceptor.

Surprise me? No.

So I want to see it? Also no.

He won a bnf at FB sure but having him as the second ruck/mid is almost a structural hack.

We'll have to see. His output dipped in that role in 2023. I'm hoping that with Danger not carrying injuries, Guthrie back and Stanley playing more consistently he can get back to his 2022 best. But I could see that being compatible with brief stints behind the ball too.

He went from 2.56 coaches votes per game and All Australian best 22 to 0.79 coaches votes per game and not close to the AA squad of 44.

Disposals, disposal efficiency, rebound 50s, intercepts, marks, spoils, tackles and hit out numbers declined.

Champion data had him as one of our decliners in 2023 along with Tuohy, Smith, Stengle and a few others.

Plus he also missed a few games and didn't always have the best set of players around him.

So yes he's one I have marked for potential upside in 2024 compared to 2023, because I rate him highly. He is still good enough to be in the AA squad conversation.

I think Blitz performed quite well this year. I just think he was in a position where, without the more attacking mids taking the lead the overall mix looked worse. Would take that any day over having in the backline again

Geee I must be one of very few on wanting Blitz to go back into defence in 2024 and beyond.. But still playing that 2nd ruck...

Look this is only my view ( and all of us here know better as we're all keyboard warriors and we know best )

Id rather see his role in the midfield be used for the youth to play there, as we all can't keep playing all these 30 plus year olds in there, eg Guthrie, Dangerfield, Blitz..
I wouldn't mind giving that spot for the Clark, Bruhn, Knevitt etc ( yes Bruhn played there this year but would of he got that greater opportunity playing there if it wasn't our majority midfielders were injured, probably not )

Well I'm just explaining how his output dropped - it's not a subjective thing, in fact it's very measurable and right there. It's not an insult - he was an AA level midfielder/second ruck in 2022. And it's a good thing because it gives us potential upside in 2024. It would be scary if everyone played to their full capacity in 2023.

Jezz I hope we just pick a really good player for pick 8. Nate Caddy would be my choice. Second power forward in the top 10. Apparently quality drops from the second half of the first round.

I'm warming to Caddy a bit.

He reminds me a lot of Oscar Allen at the same age. Oscar slid a bit in his draft year, and that was mainly due to the same question marks that are being placed on Caddy.

Is he big enough to be a key forward? Is he just a really tall mid? Stuff like that.

A mate of mine who barracks for the Eagles mentioned them trialing Oscar as a 'Fyfe style' mid in his early days, and I could see similar with Caddy.

He still wouldn't be my first choice, but I'm getting my head around us taking him. I would prefer him to O'Sullivan for instance.

You take the gun key forward over the gun key defender every day of the week. They're just so valuable, and they're almost always early picks for a reason.

An O'Sullivan type can be found later in the draft, and we've already got SDK & Jack Henry who will be around for most, if not longer than the next 10 years.

Up the other end, Ollie Henry's a proven gun, while Neale is more of a ruck forward type in the mold of Rory Lobb. We do need another one coming through, either this year or next, or we'll go hard for JUH/Cadman.

Caddy won't be Tom Hawkins, but nobody will be. The great irony in all of this is 5 or 6 years ago, many where of the belief that players of Hawkins' ilk were going extinct.

The game seemed to be progressing further away from traditional, bulky, lead and mark key forwards.

If Caddy was being drafted back then, he'd probably be a lot more popular on here, as players like De Goey, Stringer and even Buddy to an extent where all the rage as mobile, psuedo key forwards who didn't rely on their marking game.

Hopefully for the sake of this board, the whole discussion is pointless and we're getting Sanders, but that feels increasingly unlikely without trading up.

Can't quite get my head around the logic here.

Having to use Blitz as a pinch hit ruck / mid is a bandaid .

If we had a genuine ruck and strong mid division Blitz down back would make us stronger. A luxury even.

Blitz had about half a season when he was good down back, back when we had a game style devised around slow ball movement to protect the back six from counterattacks. Whenever he has gone back since he has been ordinary. While you don't want to be in a position where he is our #1 ruckman, I'm not sure how anyone can argue that his best position is mid/utility by a country mile.

Don’t let an argument of him winning a best and fairest 5 years ago ruin a good story

We can only dance with the midfield shoes we've got though and we don't have Gawn-Trac-Oliver combos there.

If I can paint a picture: the year Blitz won a bnf as a defender we also slowed ball movement to a crawl to protect an extremely inexperienced backline. Our backline looked far better than it was. Blitz moving to a ruck-wing combo supported a strategy of running oppo rucks ragged and forcing their second strings to take more hitouts. I think this was a big part of getting a flag from 2 GFs since the move.

What I'm basically saying is yes he can do both, but one of those roles has much more impact than the other in my opinion.

Caddy is so hard to judge because it's really hard to judge forwards in the under 18s, whilst they are all talented young kids the ball movement isn't always great and they are reliant on how their team performs. I think he's shown he has talent but how high to rate him is hard. I wouldn't be disappointed if we take him.

My read is that if Caddy is available when it’s our turn then we’ll take him. If he’s taken earlier (assuming Sanders is as well which seems a given) then we will consider offers to trade down. The interesting player is Curtin. Would we take him if he’s available or would we trade?

If we do end up trading then we likely pick up either an extra pick in the top 25 this year and/or get a future pick of some sort for 2024.

Who we look at if we trade down is hard to judge as there’s a very even group after the first 10 picks.

I think there’s a good chance one of Caddy, Sanders or Curtin will be available at our selection. If that occurs, then 100% we’ll use the pick unless we are offered something tantalising for the future (eg. WCE F1, NM F1 - if they offered this, I’d probably expect us to swap F1 selections)

I would be surprised if WC or North offered up their FF for Curtin when you consider what the Eagles have already knocked back for pick 1 this year and that North would have bypassed him with their first 2 picks if he’s available to us.

Freo might offer their FF but that won’t be enough in itself. They don’t have any picks this year of value either.

Adel are the club that do have the picks to trade with us AND could be interested in taking Curtin. Whether we would trade out and bypass him is the question…?

i would trade for Adl future 1st. big chance they could slide back ala freo 23.

Cherry picking stats there. He also averaged more kicks, clearances, inside 50s, goals, and goal assists this year. He also came 6th in the B&F after missing four games and being subbed out early in another. He had a great year.
