it's funny that the prevailing theme amongst Dogs supporters is that Baz is actually a bad footballer and they made out like bandits in the trade

He has a great game and they talk about disposal efficiency completely ignoring he’s one of the favourites for the freaking Brownlow lol

He has an average game and they’re calling him every name under the sun.

It’s almost like a jilted ex lover, pretty embarrassing to be focusing that much time and energy on an oppo player.
I’m sure they’d say, “But but but he brought up Ballarat”

To that I would say

1. He was asked the question about playing in front of nearly 90k at the G over other places, he didn’t bring up Crowd sizes in the first place and it was a harmless bit of banter. It’s not like he was saying they are horrible human beings etc etc.

2. Pretending you haven’t been living and breathing on every disposal he’s made or missed for 7 games across boards and threads not even involving your own team is pretty pathetic (it’s Tiger cooker fan level stuff….never go full Richmond)
Choosing to create a thread on your own board about an ex player is just juvenile stuff LOL

I know personally I couldn’t care less about players once they leave Geelong, if they want to do that it’s totally up to them but then they have to know they clearly value things other than winning more like homesickness or the money. That’s their choice, they are totally within their rights to choose their workplace and do so.

Bowes, Stewart, Cameron, Danger and others will be coming off large contracts, moved to the veterans list, or Duncan + Rhys retired.

The AFL community will absolutely lose it when we land both Reid and Butters (and more) — and I, for one, will be loving every second of it. Suck it, losers

They’ll say, “How can they afford everyone” while Brisbane roll around with the biggest roll Royce superstar squad with depth for days with guys getting paid huge money.

If Brisbane can do it and everyone pots Geelong’s list and Scott getting the most out of unheralded guys, then who are we actually paying? Older blokes take paycuts, young blokes aren’t 1st round pick guaranteed contracts. There’s about 4 guys on big money and they rest are cost managed.

Normally i'd be against it due to his age, but considering how well he looks after himself and how he plays I would be happy if we gave Blitz 3 years. If Conroy emerges, or we bring in a new ruck, or maybe theres a positional shift like Neale ruck and SDK forward, Blicavs at his worst will still be a very good KPD because he will always have a good enough tank and he is tall enough.

Or maybe for shits and giggles we throw Blitz into the FF role for 2 years and watch him win a Coleman :smirk:

A 3yr deal could see him pushing 350 games - for a guy who hasn't played since junior footy days and debuted the week of his 22nd birthday, that's just a crazy prospect

He did, but I still think Franklin for what he gave Sydney was an overwhelming success. But even then like you said, he wasn't a generational talent for the Swom like he was for the Hawks.

Wasn't his deal something like 10 years? I would say thats a success, I know he had injuries at times but he was their leading goal kicker for all their flag seasons and as Commando said by the end of his contract he was likely playing for unders.

I guess the real question is, is the issue with long term deals or is the issue with long term deals that tie up too much money for average players.
Found an article that doesn't differentiate whether they signed initial long deals or have just signed extensions but these are some names of players that signed longer contracts (article was written end of 2023)

Most of those deals at the time didn't make sense, and we are a season and a bit later on and already some of those deals are big wins like Blakey, both Daicos deals, Larkey and Hipwood and some are catastrophic like Ben McKay and Oliver.

And I think soon we will see some of those deals look bad in hindsight if we see Curnow or Harry McKay struggle with injuries, Hopper is poor, Mills is constantly injured, Petracca wants out, Jackson wants out and Naughton isn't top dog with the emergence of Darcy.
How did Brennan Cox get a contract that long?

Yeah Blitz deserves at least 2 more.
Not sure who Conroy is but I'd be keen to see him emerge from somewhere if he's a prospect.

Quick update:

It’s all happening this year, it’s madness…

Butters meeting confirmed. Basic indication is he is 100% leaving at the end of 2026. Race is on. (I personally think we should get Hinkley in some role to persuade).

Conversations with Reid’s management are strong and frequent. This is becoming more live by the day.

Conversation with JUH and his management occurred over the weekend. Lots of feeling out there but interest definitely not dead.

No updates on TDK.

No updates on Rowell.

No updates on Oliver.

Also, asked about Worpel. The news I’m hearing is he will go to Saints.
This is elite intel that drives good Big Footy chat. Thanks so much.

My thinking is Conroy = Conway, with maybe a bit of autocorrect in there

From afar, the thing I’ve most admired about Geelong over the last two decades is the quality of people in your playing group. Selwood, Hawkins, Dangerfield etc...you always knew what you’d get. Ultimate team players.

We’ve had talent, but team harmony and selfless footy have been recurring issues. It’s why we had to trade out guys like Stringer, Hunter, and more recently, Baz.

The only player Dogs supporters would want back is Dunkley. He was the glue guy – the defensive anchor in midfield and the ultimate team man. He left because of issues with Hunter and Baz.

Kennedy is our Dunkley replacement. Swapping him for Baz makes no sense when the team is finally clicking.
So you are absolving Bevo of any complicity in Team attrition (including possibly JUH)? The "Bevo Repellent" effect..

Doesn't the buck stop with Bevo?

It's a convenient narrative to say that someone like Dunkley only left because of other players. It makes absolutely no sense when you take even a moment to think about it, though.

Even if the issue was primarily with 'characters' like Hunter and Smith, who is ultimately responsible for keeping those players in sync and not causing untoward issues for the group? It's absolutely the coaching staff and football department.

So any reflection on how 'untenable' it was to play with Lachie and Lenka is also a profound reflection on how ineffective the powers that be at the club were in dealing with the mavericks.

So whether Doggies fans feel it fits the narrative or not, Bevo is definitely in the thick of it. You can't supposedly be 'all good' with the coach while he's also part of setting a culture that allows behaviours that you think are selfish, indulgent and costly to the group at large.

And I think Dunkley is actually the most interesting departure of all, really. Didn't just want out at the end of one season. Was forced to stay and was then just as adamant that he was still getting out of the place twelve months later. Hardly speaks of a player who was really enjoying the coaching environment and just wanted the odd player to pull their head in to make everything sweet.

Since the Oliver wanting out still story broke it seems journo’s are linking Cats and Reid more and more, whereas I think only Cal Twoomey was going with it prior to that.

They are now running with no suitors for Oliver unless he takes a $500k paycut, wonder where they heard that….cough….bigfooty…cough!!

post below

My table just lifted with excitement.

I would engage in the like button, but I was banned using it for a week because I LOL’d at a collingwood fan saying geelong bribed all the umpires

Hunter also left at the same time. If he really was that big an issue then surely him leaving would mean Dunkley would change his mind. But he didn't.

It's undeniable that the dogs have had a string of talented players leave. We don't know the reasons but it's clearly not positive and the idea it's all down to a couple of players is laughable.

Saints are chasing Oliver and TDK. Not sure about Worpel so I will ask. Their list management team is obsessed with getting a big name star and that's all they want to talk about. Just pure frustration that they are offering 300-400k more than other clubs for players and yet no one will bite. Ross Lyon seems to be well liked among the playing group and the players who do meet Ross like him.

We were all over JUH a month or 2 ago and it looked almost certain we would get him. Not so sure now with his behavioural issues.

Yeah we are still hunting JUH. Just no point driving his price up when there’s a real chance he could become a DFA

Yeah prior to that I think some journalists just liked putting him with Essendon because he has a friend in Caddy there and the “2 million dollar man” headline sells.

But Twomey has good intel. And it’s a pretty open secret we are in his ear and chasing so only a matter of time everyone jumps on it.

if Twomey (an Essendon tragic) is still saying it's Geelong...well that says a lot.

He was also saying Geelong for Baz long before other journos and they were all saying Baz to Hawks.

Twomey is good value, you know he doesn't trifle with bullshit innuendo and
If he's certain about something you know its live.

Want to give you a nice pat on the back.

Keep the info and details coming.

Whoever gives you crap needs to understand… that not all discussions and talks behind the scenes end up public and many things end up falling through. Anyone who has had involvement in corporate sales and business deals also understands this.

When you are talking trading people… there are so many dynamic parts and decisions that fluctuate, things can go from certain to uncertain as well at times.

It does not discredit you…I imagine we make 100 enquirers in due dilligence with only a handful turning into something more and from those handful only a smaller handful eventuate.

Continue the awesome work.
