Hawks have more cap room than us. They can outbid for worpel if they want.
If they aren't offering him more it means they have a high value trade target lined up.

Nah there's no way in the world they've got more cap room than us.

We've got Cameron, Stewart, Guthrie, Blicavs and Danger all on very good money who are 32+ and will be gone or on way reduced money in 2 years.

The 2 young guys worth a huge amount (Holmes and Smith) were both signed when they were worth far less than their current value.

The Hawks have nobody on big money 32+. They have guys like Meek, Weddle and Newcombe out of contract soon and deserving a massive raise. And they just splurged on Battle and Barras who are likely both on more than Smith.

Because he's played 240 games in the Hoops, he's a premiership player, had worn an All Australian blazer and is dual best & fairest winner - he's earned the right to give himself the best chance of playing senior football this season and being the one to make the call on his future, rather than the club essentially calling time on his career

We need to realise that there's simply no stand out state ruck that's calling for selection at the MSD - Keogh who had been tipped to go to Essendon is now out for the year due to injury, and suggestions are their attention is on Ajang Kuol Mun. If that's who a team with less ruck options than us is looking at, it gives a good indication of the lack of quality options that look like being available

Besides, we've currently got 8 players on our list capable of playing in the ruck and the club will continue back in those players to be able to get the job done this year

The other factor to consider - Stanley is already back running, and not expected to be out for too long and the MSD isn't for another 2.5 weeks, so Stanley could be back before then anyway

Add to all of these good points.
If we turn around now and put Guthrie on the long term injury list, what was the point in putting all the work into him over the last couple of years if we just give up on him now.
Doubt that happens

We should be going so hard at RoMa. He can walk into our #1 ruck role and be coached by the best coach in the league. What's not to like?

The problem with Roma is he's 30 and he's banged up from having to carry their ruck division every week. He might only have say 3 good years left.
Now if they would trade him cheap say a r2 sure we would do it but they will want 2 r1s and he's nor worth that due to age
The time to trade him in was a couple of years ago.

Although we have a long list of players who could nominally play as Rucks, I think we really have only Rhys (Old), Conway (injury prone and not proven and Pike (not ready) as guys you would list as rucks in the traditional sense. I would call Edwards and Molier hybrids rather than Rucks but both are not ready anyway. Neal, Blitz and SDK all fall into the hybrid box.

I would be amazed if we were to select a Ruck in the Mid Season draft because Scott would rather go with existing pinch hitters. I feel we are better positioned in this category this year than the last couple of years.

If the vibe about Harley is true, I imagine every move we make from now is about landing him while still having enough talent to survice 3 years without a first or second round pick. So mature age guys or recently overlooked with some potential types, both in any other position would be my guess in the Mid Season draft. Of course that assumes we make a slot available.

If we are serious about Harley and he is held to his contract this year, I would expect us to roll our first and second into next year. Getting him and being able to trade for anyone else are mutually exclusive. So its acadamy guys, long shots and free agents all the way.

Fortunately Wells and Mack love a challenge! Picking up Marra as a DFA at year end will be a great start.

I agree with all that. My only point is this draft is really compromised and I can't see teams wanting to trade into it much
So if we have a late r1 (finish top 6) that will probably only fetch us a 2026 r2 if we try to roll if forward to next year. But I agree with the strategy.

They do because when they traded Mitchell and Jaeger they cleared huge wages and replaced them mainly with kids (even when meek came in he was on a fringe on low wages and massimo the same) so they were front loading to hit the cap floor. They haven't done many huge wage ins apart from battle and barass now.

That said even though hawthorn will have more cap room than us it's not really the point. They can afford to pay worpel more than us but if they decide he's only worth say 650k because they want to prioritise other players then we could well get him.

High Value Trade HVT? Fair enough.

If they lose Worpel to us or the Saints … whats the FA comp going to be? Band2 ..Worpel would not be Band1 would he?

They have Carltons R1 , add another Band2 comp ..is that enough to get Rowel from GC or to get into Reids ear?

Depends on Allen. If haw get him then they get no compo for worpel unless they match and try to force a trade. His wages (he won't go to St kilda) won't be enough to get band 1-band 2 at best.
I think Rowell will stay at gc for 2 years. Reid is the great unknown.

We'll send you our 2026 and 2027 third rounders with Harley but I'd say this will be the deal if he asks to leave to you blokes.

I'd try and roll our 2025 r1 into a 2026 r1 if we can get a buyer (might only fetch a r2 though) and I'd trade that plus the 2026 and 2027 r1s (3r1s) for Reid. If we can get a couple of r3s back either this year (for academy points) or future I'd do it.
Would mean we would be picking late in the draft rookies and mature ages for a few years but I could live with it.

But you guys wouldn't trade him to us this year anyway.

Does anyone know Brad Green's postal address?

I'd like to send him a gift for vetoing the Oliver trade last year... bro saved us millions and a first-rounder.

This was an all-time save by Greeny... Well done mate.

We only ever offered a 2nd rounder but fair point.

It's pretty curious they haven't offered him a contract. They're up to something

Look my mail is he loves it there and wants to stay (although if he gets pushed out I think he will pick us) so if they don't offer him a deal soon they definitely have some big trade ins in the works. I doubt they are in for Butters but you just never know.

Will they match though. K get the feeling that although they rate him…in the usual Haw way ..they will not cry into their pretzels about him going ..especially if it gets them a pick. At worst it gives them cap room for next year and on. Is it possible, like with Danger , that non match trade happens Nowhere near a Danger trade but a trade before a match..as they really do not want to be left holding a match that Worpel say thanks I will stay.?

Rowell for 2 make sense. Give the GC another two years to do something ..and tehn will be UFA when the money tree gets shaken from Tas looking at players. They will be inflationary ..and even those that do not go to the green devils will benifit from their money.

and Reid ..I still don't see them trading for three R1 picks that are almost R2 picks. Maybe we can get a early R1 somehow not sure.If and when he names us ..then maybe I will believe a little more

We have Jesse Mellor and Ben Rongdit coming through as NGA.

Mellor looks like he could go top 15 in the draft at this rate and he is NGA for us so just have to bid match.

This is a game he had recently for Vic Country and what scouts said about him,.

#14 Jesse Mellor
Geelong Falcons (Geelong NGA) | 185cm | 04/01/2007

Stats:
17 disposals, 6 marks, 6 goals, 3 behinds

Finishing with a six-goal haul which four of them coming in the all-important last quarter, Geelong NGA product Mellor was dangerous all day inside 50 for the Vic Country team as he continues his excellent start to the season. That haul could easily have been more with improvements needed for his snap shot kicking and at times judgement of the wind when it came to set shots. He kicked his first goal from a set shot kick and throughout the day he provided a great medium sized forward option. Mellor looked for better options when necessary highlighting his selflessness and was quick to pounce on loose balls showing his quick reactions and crumbing ability. Amongst his better goals for the day included the one on the run in the third quarter and then showing great positioning to instantly reply after the Young Guns kicked the first of the final quarter. He then backed it up again to kick another later on to put Country back in the lead and they were never headed from there.”

Kid is gonna be a freak and the melts are gonna be incredible when we get him.
Cats have only ever picked up Ted Clohesy out of our NGA, it’s basically been unused for us.

Rongdit will probably go 2nd or 3rd round and is the small/medium defender we’ve been desperately chasing for years to actually play that role. He didn’t have a huge amount of footy but impressed with his athleticism and x-factor.

#8 Ben Rongdit | Defender
Geelong Falcons/Vic Country (Geelong NGA)

Stats:
3 disposals, 2 marks, 1 inside 50

Rongdit only found the ball a few times but only needs those moments to show his potential. His closing speed to spoil and willingness to compete aerially were impressive, even standing bravely under a high ball to take one of his two marks. Few prospects display such defensive intensity as the competitive left-footed prospect, who is part of Geelong’s Next Generation Academy (NGA).

I like what I'm reading too but there's a long way to go with both jesse and Ben. Positive signs

Another week, another game where Butters severely outperformed Rowell.
I think the same way we put Mullin on Daicos we need to put Mullin on Butters. He generates so much for them. Also, we need a defensive forward on Rozee. He's been good off half back. We do that we severely limit their movement

Agreed.

And the same way we recruited Dangerfield, we need to recruit Butters.

Rowell is looking more like a Tom Mitchell. Still a great bull to have, might peak for a couple of years but not an absolute game breaker for years on end. Lack of pace, power and skill compared to your A+ players.

I'm cooling on Rowell big time.

Would still take him, but if you'd asked me 6 weeks ago, three firsts would have been on the table. I don't know if I'd give up half of that now.

I know that sounds like a big shift for such a short period, but it's concerning how he starts seasons as the second coming of GAJ, and as soon as the weather cools a bit, he turns into something resembling Tom Atkins if he took 'The Substance' (good popcorn flick btw, should check out if you haven't.)

Still a good player obviously, as is our Tom...but if we're selling the farm here, I'd be going for Reid or Butters first.

You can still pickup Worpel that way for SFA if we're that desperate for some more grunt.

Both of these guys appear to have some potential. I guess my point is that if we want Harley we will have to be all in. Whether its these guys being selected by other teams early or anyone else in the draft that Wells likes, we wont be able to have it both ways. 3 years with no early draft picks means 3 years with no early draft picks.

Hope he is worth it.

I mean we've had 3 early draft picks since 2007 so I don't know it's a huge deal.
