Maybe, but you're asking a lot. He's playing like a 500k player these days, and owed an average of 1.6m for five more years.

He won't go down to 500k, so even if you meet in the middle and say we'll offer you a new deal at 800-900k, that's still way too much, and he'd have to agree to it too.

The whole thing is screwed. I seriously doubt we'd entertain it even if it was Bowes esque.
The dees just have to use this period to knuckle down on front loading that contract so that when they have new players coming through they aren't tied to him significantly

Problem is Clarry isn’t the only one on such a high contract at the club

It’s going to bite them in ass big time

Absolutely zero surprise

When you consider the number of players that St Kilda has been linked to reportedly being interested in and the money they're reportedly been throwing around, the fact they've yet to be linked to any interest in Oliver says a lot

Makes you really appreciate how well run this club is , saw it with Collingwood a few years ago and it looks like Melb and saints will be next in the firing line for poor SC management

Bris is another discussion altogether if they get Allen and Co..I don’t know how they are affording all of their players

Luck is huge too. Clarry might have been stinking it up for us this year and preventing us going after other players

I hope TDK's manager is reading him bedtime stories about the tale of Clarry Oliver.

Melbourne must make significant changes in personel even if the changes don't change their salary position that much.

I agree its a lot of money. But the pressure to perform will be greater than any player ever. One bad game and it will start. He will get really good money to set himself up for life regardless. Is the extra cash worth the pressure. I would think Clarry might not think so these days.

NWM would be feeling a ton of that atm , I think high performance athletes are under pressure no matter what pay scale they are on it’s the nature of the job

Now the question should be if the culture and work life is worth the money imo

Jon Ralph on Oliver
  • zero interest from any other club
  • Oliver would need to take a significant pay cut of at least $500k
  • clubs are looking to the future with players like Butters and saving money for players other than Oliver and simply don't want to use salary cap space on him
Ralph is wrong on the middle bit. It is Melbourne who will be paying a big chunk of Oliver’s full salary in order to move him on. What a costly mistake. Hope Brad Green is happy.

I think it would be both. Even if he takes a $500k pay cut, his salary would be north of $1mil a season, which would still require Melbourne paying a significant portion.

His currently salary is so far from his worth that it would require both, not one or the other.

I think he is just one of those types who is hesitant, almost introverted (unlike most AFL players!) and lacks self-belief. He was like that from the start in the VFL and it took him a year to believe and then he played some really good games at that level. I think when he has played AFL (and he hasn't had a good long run at it thru injury and form) he looks around and sees Danger and Bont and Jezza and Gawn (etc) and thinks he shouldn't be out there with them. If he can overcome this, he could be good. And HBF is a good place to get some confidence.
I'll preface this by saying I watch very little VFL. But this has always been my first thought about him. If he had a little more arrogance about him, he would be a much better player IMO.

The three players at the draft thing is a huge driver.

Imagining a scenario where we land Marshall and Worpel, clohesy and Mullin need to be upgraded to senior list. That's 4 spots plus 3 draftees for 7 total out from the senior list.

Less controversial:
Duncan
Guthrie
Bews (for real this time)

More controversial:
Stevens
Whiltshire
Bruhn (no further comment)
Conway (traded, i hope not)
Clohesy (traded, not my preference)

Delist and re-rookie?
Stanley?

I posted more than 7 due to certain unknowns that will not be explored further
The fact that it's even possible for us to re-draft a 34yo who has played 224 games onto the rookie list shows how much of a farce the rookie list is.

For new players, I am worried about our backline.

And would absolutely be throwing the hat in for Silvagni.
I really like him. I cant believe he's even an option.

My only gripe is that his first thought is to move the ball sideways.
We can train that out.

Will cost us bugger all. And then keep the powder dry for butters.

I wonder what Oliver's contract says about playing VFL ?

What sort of penality is there for breach sal cap to rebalance their cap? If they could push money forward to rebalance their cap.. this year might be the time to do it. Get excluded from R1 ? They do not have an R1.

Ideally it would be great if you could trade out a big contract to a club like the saints with heaps of cap room.

The list looks ordinary. Id have a look at which players have value. I cant see anyone who is OOC in 25 that would gather a decent pick or really appeal much to other clubs.

The AFL should take some reasonability. Allowing these stupid contract lengths without having some sort of buy out as protection.

Specifically … what is this. No pick to get him as he is a FA. He would be on 700 plus dollars..

Gonna be a great poster child for stubbornly holding a player to club and contract that they arent worth - mind you aint stopped other clubs throwing mega numbers and deal offers at players

People can all see the CO cliff coming - yet they all think it cant and wont happen to them. Titanic mentality.
