Marshall will be over 30 before he’d even play a game at Geelong. I note the story said the cats would be paying a 1st round pick!

With all due respect Marshall isn’t in the top 10 of AFL ruckman and is already 30. I like him and if we got a pick in the 20s back then maybe but I’d be passing on that mentioned deal.

You simply don’t waste 1st Rd picks or million dollar contracts on ruckman.

I think he's comfortably top 10 and I'd put him no.2 if you're looking at the last 3-4 seasons.

Xerri and Jackson have shown huge improvement; it would be fair to put them ahead of Marshall now, but I'm not sure anybody else is clearly better.

There is a nice little batch of players that are forming around our picks for the draft.

At the moment we are around pick 17 and 35. Plus 5 with other picks f/s and academy.

The ones on my list that may slip who have enormous upside are

Cody Curtin
Has dropped down the ratings significantly and it is because he didn't have a great championship. He was a potential top 5 pick at the beginning of the year and is a mountain of a man I would guess 197 plus and 100 kg plus. He is the second coming of Tom Hawkins (Tomohawk won the larke medal though). He has looked slow at times and had many critics, so much that maybe he does slip to even our second round pick, but I would be happy to take a risk on him. Has kicked over 5 goals in 6 of his last 10 Colts games and has still drawn criticism. Btw brother of this years rising star Dan.

Hunter Holmes
Another brother that has slid down the rankings, he is a very raw talent but so was Max. Has that speed and carry that is so valuable and would love to have another set of brothers at the cats.

Archie Ludowyke
He looks a player that can take a grab at full stretch 195 plus and a little bit like Shanahan last year is a kpp player that may slip but has something that I really like from the vision I have seen. Played some senior football and held his own.

Riley Onley
Big bodied midfielder with power and speed, looks to have a gear that most don't for his size. Has a little bit wayward kicking at times but I think the upside is huge. I don't think he will slip to our second pick though.

Sullivan Robey
The hottest name in the draft at the moment has come from not making a under 18 squad playing seniors in the regional leagues and bursting on to the under 18 scene with 40 and 3 and 27 and 2 in the last two games being finals. He is a big midfielder a little bit like Jack Bowes but with a bit more explosiveness from what I can see. Will be a bolter but maybe too big a risk to go before our first pick.

Jesse Mellor
Our Academy boy kicked 4 last week in the finals and has played senior football for the cats already with 17 possessions and 2 goals in one game. Seems to be the forward who can go into the midfield type, which we have alot of but would be silly not to match a bid on him.

Sam Swadling
Love this guy as a footballer, his smarts and skills are great. He is a ball magnet and is dominating colts and playing very well in league football as well for West Perth. His championships became an all aus member but was not used in the midfield enough to really show what he is against quality opposition. Could be a Lenny Hayes or a Paddy Dow.

Cumming, Barker, Greeves possible slips as well.

That's a great write up. Like the sounds of onley and robey, robey especially. Fair odds we lose the pick for Marshall though.

Well at least we know that Mellor is a serious possability

I can understand your concerns.. however getting a pick back in the 20’s. Our R1 will probably be in the 20’s. Not perfect but it would give us some breathing space due to the lack of luck with Conway. Bottom line for me is we have a side that with another 20 games into our young players should be in contention in 2026. But our options for ruck are so thin they are anorexic

If we can work our a way to get done fro less than R1. Great. but considering the draft this year is considering average and our pick is probably post 20 … I could see the club just paying to cover the role

No chance. We will have to give our r1 and r2 but pick 20 and 40 odd in a crap draft i can live with it. It's a bad ruck market its life.

Fantastic trade opportunity for both, GC should also provide some change

Walters is surplus to needs, Carlton could get started on the rebuild

I think after last year … GC can really see the advantage of adding Pnp that are off the standard that will do the role…. and the trade cost will not worry them. They seem to be in a spot that Stk are trying to get to… that being.. that their team looks on the verge of a long period of strong competitiveness ..and suddenly they look appealing to serious players.

If they added Curnow , it would only again show that they have reached the level of serious appeal. So would it matter if they over pay by heaps especially if they can do a deal that see Carlton keep some of his money.

So yes id be willing to look at trading Walter and a selection of other players to get it done. Chuck in a R1 too

To what Pure? Getting him cheaper than our r1? I was just making the point in that post that our R1 is probably going to be in the 20’s … so I cant see us getting a 20 back in the trade deal.

P1 and P2 for a 30 year old… Thats like paying 40 bucks for a glass of water in a desert but ...

..you cant always get what you want but if you try sometimes you will find you can get what you need …. and we do need some sort of ruck coverage in 2026. So If we add Marshall and Worpel and couple draftees ..its probably not going to set our hearts a fluttering but they probably play more than the kids we could have drafted.

I'd settle with that, last time we got a ruckman that started at another club as a forward it was Brad Ottens and that would be lovely to have again.
Stanley actually started as a forward for the Saints if I remember as a forward then a forward/2nd ruck behind McEvoy.

I remember a game of the Saints early on they had him at CHF and were saying he would be the next Riewoldt.

I TOLD YOU ALL IT WAS HAPPENING.

MAKE ME A FREAKING ITK

Excited Lets Go GIF

Id easily have Marshall in the top 10 ruck.. id say he be in the top 7 ish

Yeah idk what old mate is on about.
Certainly seem like a top 10 ruck when he destroyed us in Round 2?

IMG_4748.jpeg

Doesn’t even mention the inside 50’s of which he had 6 and score involvements of which he had 9.

He’s like Rhys Stanley but like if Rhys was playing great games every week instead of the 4/5 games a year he does it.

I love Rhys but we can’t keep relying on him, Conway needs to prove he can actually string games together. Edwards and Mollier are super young, basically string beans.

We need a starting Ruck right now so we don’t kill Blics and SDK/Neale can play their natural roles.
Blics body is getting banged up, Rowan can give us a huge boost in an area of weakness.

Basically plays as an extra mid.

I'd settle with that, last time we got a ruckman that started at another club as a forward it was Brad Ottens and that would be lovely to have again.
I think Stanley started as a forward too didn't he? Pinch hit only.

I'd settle for a stanley type situation to bridge to Edwards.

Yeah correct theres no way we get him and keep our r1. In fact given his contract status and how late our r1 is it will probably cost more hence the r2.

Your analogy is good I agree its a lot but unless we can find another mature ruck now I think we have to with Conway injured again (and probably cooked).

I do not see any other gettable realistic options but I wonder when we look at ruck movement next year if Marshall will be assessed as the best ruck that moved.

Thank you. I don't have a chance to watch junior footy so really appreciate these profiles of potential draftees. So some questions.

Where do you think Holmes will go? Any chance he lasts to our second round pick - which will likely be our first if we are paying for Marshall?

on Robey: sounds good, but is he the kind of player who might dominate juniors because of relative size then struggle against adults?

I do not see any other gettable realistic options but I wonder when we look at ruck movement next year if Marshall will be assessed as the best ruck that moved.
I agree, but honestly I would be upset if we overpaid like some seem to suggest. StKilda need him gone just as much as we need him here.

I'm liking some of the names in the 2nd round and they are really not much worse than some of the high end picks in this draft
