Help me understand why anyone would want to lose someone as important to us as Stengle, plus a F1 for a guy who's numbers are inferior to a young forward we have who has a lot more upside than Curnow moving forward. We have 2 years more of Jezza, in that time Neale will become a beast. Molier looking very likely. Watch replays of Curnow this year. He's a lazy downhill skier, doesn't chase, no second efforts, wouldn't know a 3rd effort if it bit him. We simply don't need Curnow unless he costs us bugger all.
Polkinghorn as well as Molier.
Polkinghorn was our best forward this season.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Mannagh & even Dangerfield up forward have had something of an impact on his scoreboard impact

Back in 22 it was Hawkins, Cameron & Rohan as our 3 tall/er targets with Stengle, Close and to a lesser extent Miers as our small forward options

This year it's Cameron & Neale as our consistent KPFs, then we've used Ollie Henry, Martin & Dangerfield in the third tall forward role, with the captain also a wrecking ball once the ball hits the deck. As Mannagh has joined that small forward group alongside Stengle & Close - even though both Mannagh & Miers do spend time up the ground, both have shown an ability to be dangerous when there's a ground ball to be won or getting on the end of a scoring chain

So there's a bit more role sharing for Stengle this year and he's had to find other ways to impact games than simply hitting the scoreboard himself

I think we need to look at a players performance within a season and season to season as organic things. Life situations and physical issues can cause small changes within an athlete. Sometimes one small thing leads to a domino effect of things which distract. These guys are high performance and being a slight bit off can show itself on field. We who watch the games and study stats sometimes look at them as robots who should be able to replicate performance day after day.
Without any proof or knowledge, I think Stengle may have had something going on in his head, wasn't totally in the zone he is capable of, his stats decline, we go.......
But I think whatever it was; external, internal, something totally imaginary, he has worked through it and is very focused and maybe entering the zone at a good time. :thumbsupv1:
Anyway, that's my 2 Imperial Galactic Credits.

What sounds logical :

Conway’s history and recent surgery mean he is 100 :1 to be a reliable prospect in the long term
George Stevens was at home in the seniors late in the year and is coming on well - mad to lose him
Clohesey has a bit of Atkins feel and ditto too early to lose him
All Bruin entries here are BS - no-one actually knows so let’s wait it out and trust the club to make the right call
Worpol is a good get regardless of anything else, as he is a free agent
Curnow is click-bait - Cats can’t trade big for an aged banged up Curnow, regardless of a cut in salary
Marshall makes total sense and we should get him if we can - that’s where the trade capital will go
Perfect summary.

I haven’t given up on Knevitt either (but understand why they just try out one year). And Clark’s performance over last couple of months gives us some hope that he just needs more pre season muscle and we might all be shocked at what that does - he only plays one way…but his body doesn’t yet suit it.

So if they both take a next step, and Ted and George also improve we have Clark, Bruin (he will be back), Worps, George, Ted, Knevitt all as largely back ups looking for 1-2 to try and push into best 23. Now could argue none a A grade but we just need a solid group of options for 1-2 to surprise and the rest to be depth? Pretty good depth as all of those “play the right way” in terms of head over the ball.

And then of course with Butters a certainty 12 months later I am feeling pretty bullish about how our midfield will evolve.

Re Curnow, if he was free agent he would be playing for us next year…and despite how he has looked at the Blues sometimes this year - he would be pretty handy in the hoops (understatement!), we would squeeze him in! But he isn’t so he will not be with us.

All this talk of trading Clohesy makes me “post GF loss” kinda sad…

Reckon we will regret that..ina. Tommy Atkins replacement kind of way.

Go Catters

They have pushed Miers up a bit more this year, attending some centre bounces, but I would still consider him more of a high half forward than a wing.
Given he often starts on the wing at centrebounces and gets most of his possessions there, I would be inclined to disagree. This metamorphis has taken place over 2-3 years.

If you're giving up a best 22 player in an area of surplus to get a best 22 players in an area of need it is a good idea maybe.

If you are giving up a best 22 player in an area without surplus for a best 22 player in an area we don't need you are doing it wrong.

Curnow is a great player that makes one of the best offences maybe stronger(you can't 100% say it will be better by booting Cameron out of the forward line to the wing) but would require weakening other areas.

Getting Marshall stregnthens an area of need
Getting a mid like Butters does the same for the midfield

In area of importance for improvement in 2026 the list is

Ruck
Mid

Defence

Forward

Don't get me wrong Curnow is a great player and or the right cost it would be a great move but what it will cost us isn't worth it.

Carlton aren't trading him for late round 1s and we would be stupid to give up any of the best 22 players they would ask for.

If we didn't have a good forward line say we had Cameron and not much else kinda like with Hawkins for years yes you make that move as the forward line would 100% be the area with the most need.

Some of our forward lines from 2016 when we got Danger until post 2020 were ****ing awful which is the complete opposite of right now.

Marshall and Blitz would be such a perfect combo of ruckmen.
Mellor would be a good pick up in my opinion.
I hope we can get Onley as well or take a gamble on Curtin if he falls.
I know people will hate this but give Fin Mcrae another shot.

The VFL side or senior team?

Unless there's a couple of surprises we could be tight on senior list spots

I'd pick him up for the senior side, I think he has been used out of position and in the sub role a lot at Collingwood and has performed when given an opportunity.

Hate is the wrong term, but I don’t see Macrae becoming best 22 at age 23.

How do we fit him on the senior list though?

We've currently got 5 senior listed players out of contract - Duncan (ret), Bew (sounds like he's headed west), Stevens (Ade?), Guthrie (ret?) & Wiltshire (delist?)

Then we've got Clohesy who is delist or elevate, while Mullin has to be elevated (if he wasn't already elevated this season)

We're then strongly linked to Marshall & Worpel who'll take 2 of the vacant list spots that we need to create

When then factoring in that clubs need to take 3 selections at the ND where we may well be taking 2 NGA picks, how do we then fit in Macrae as a DFA?
