2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

https://central.rookieme.com/afl/power-rankings/ed-pascoes-2025-phantom-afl-draft/

Has us taking Barker, Mikunda, Mellor, and Rongdit.

Swap out Mikunda for Oudshoorn-Bennier or Holmes and I'd personally be pretty happy with it. Not a huge fan of when we seem to go local for the sake of it, but happy to be proven wrong.

I don't know if he's across the Mullin upgrade, as he has us taking 3 at the national draft, but a pretty comprehensive effort nonetheless to cover every club in detail.
Note that he had an early bid on Dean there. Made our first pick come in to 18.

Senior List Changes:

#15 George Stevens - delisted*
#22 Mitch Duncan - retired
#29 Cam Guthrie - delisted
#31 Keighton Matofai-Forbes - delisted*

#34 Oisin Mullin - rookie list elevation
James Worpel - FA acquisition

That equals 2 vacant senior list spots

Cat A Rookie List Changes:

#25 Xavier Ivisic - delisted
#27 Patrick Retschko - traded to Richmond
#40 Ted Clohesy - delisted

*Stevens & Matofai-Forbes have been promised to be re-selected via the rookie draft

This equals 1 currently vacant Cat A rookie spot

Cat B Rookie List Changes:

#34 Oisin Mullin - senior list upgrade

One Cat B Rookie spot available

Who are our current rookies? I'd assume:

Cat A: Currently only Joe Pike? Soon to be + Stevens and Matofai-Forbes.
Cat B: Only Cillian Burke?

That's my understanding of our current rookies

I suppose with late picks in the draft and rookie, we look at a lock-down zippy small/medium defender and try find and outside midfielder with dash and good footskills. I always like going for those types of players late. Role type players.

Iv got no inside info but I would of thought if Greeves is still there when our pick is up, im sure we will be rubbing our hands into getting him
he will be available and no way we select him
we already had a better version of him and we delisted him (hopefully to rookie)
Wells/Mack will have something from left field
Koby Evans looks a likely sort

Wouldn't be surprised to see Hawthorn take him with their first pick

What does it mean for Stevens and Matofai-Forbes to be delisted from the senior list but re-selected via the rookie draft?

That rather than being senior listed players they'd be rookie listed players

Fortunately everyone gets a free farm at the cats

They drop to $100k. Which is obviously low for anyone.
And the contract will be year by year which really affects your ability to buy property.

Yep, and it would have been paid this year.
They didn't delist him, pay him out, then intend to recontract him to pay him again. That would be paying for next year twice

The whole point is that if someone else picks him up you're off the hook for his contract and if not the $100k of his rookie contract comes off the cap set aside for him

What?

If you get delisted your contract is paid out.
The first $100k of a rookie contract is outside of the cap.

And we haven't rookied him yet.

Well, Stevens was out of contract so he's dropped nothing

While KM-F has a contract for next year and that will still be paid out to him in 2026; it hasn't simply been ripped up and paid out this year

Just need to look at other clubs around the league who've delisted senior listed players that have "retired" with a year to go on their contracts, but to balance out the clubs TPP, the player will be delisted before being re-selected via the rookie draft to allow their final year of salary payments to fall in the correct year - while also opening up a senior list spot. That's exactly what's happened with the likes of

2023
Sydney - Sam Reid
GWS - Adam Kennedy

2022
GWS - Phil Davis
Adelaide - Paul Seedsman

2020
Adelaide - Bryce Gibbs

Average wage in Australia is $105k pa - that means there are a lot of people out there on a lot less than that to make $105k the average - particularly considering minimum full-time wage is something like $50k.

If they weren't kicking a footy around, at 19 years old, they'd be living at home, going to uni (and then hoping to get a grad job paying likely less than average wage - depending), learning a trade, or back-packing through Europe on a shoestring budget. They wouldn't be looking to buy property anyway.

In the grand scheme of things, I doubt they're complaining by hanging on to an AFL list - even as rookies.

Yes/No

If someone else picked up KM-F we'd have to fork out the difference between his rookie salary at this new club and the 2nd year salary owed to him as a national drafted player - I remember that issue being raised back when we delisted Oscar Brownless & Ryan Abbott

St Kilda picked up Abbott as a DFA, so not sure what happened in regards to his salary but we were able to re-draft Brownless and didn't take a hit, but it was mentioned it another club drafted them that they'd only need to offer a rookie contract and we'd need to pay the difference with what was owed

Not sure if things have changed on that front
