This is the GWS Mock Draft order for the GWS Board Mock Draft.

Reminder, we'll select 3 rounds - as we get close to that (after a number of bids & matches, the last 'third round pick' will come earlier, I'll assess where we actually finish.

Reminder to tag me into any trades, bids & matches, and I will update the draft order after any bid matches (with an explanation of the matching cost & impact on draft order - based on my imperfect understanding of the AFL rules!). Also tag the next poster once you've selected your player.

I will pin this post & also update selected players as I can.

Hi all,

Last year this board ran our first mock draft, which I thought went pretty well, so I'm happy to do another one this year if there's enough interest. We didn't have enough interest to have 1 poster picking per team, but we only need 9 interested to have 2 teams per poster.

I'll start with EOIs - if you'd like to participate, drop your interest into this thread. Please nominate a primary, and a secondary team. If you're happy to take any team, or any secondary team, then say that so it gives me some flexibility. If you'd like to select for GWS, tell me that separately from your primary & secondary; since I expect a few will want to do that job I'll make a selection at some point on who I think has been a good poster over the past year.

I'll look to start in approximately 3 weeks, in early November, which is still a month before the real draft. Picks are still able to be traded in real life, but I'll lock the draft order at the start of our draft. You'll be able to trade in our edition, including futures, but I will run a "reasonableness check" so there's nothing unfair for other posters/teams. There will also be academy and father/son bids & matching - I'll crunch the numbers and reset the draft order after those. We won't move exceptionally quickly - no 1 hour time deadlines - but if you sign up, please keep an eye on the start and be prepared to check regularly. I'll start with a strict 24 hour requirement to select - if not, I'll choose for you. But I'm also happy if you know you'll be unable to check on some days to get a PM with a few preferences for your next selection. I'll limit selections to 3 rounds, given that list spots may not be absolutely finalised, and so as to not drag it out too much.

Anyway, let's start with EOIs. Assignments as below - happy to adjust if any more interest comes in:

ADEL - Rioli2Rioli
BRIS - Rioli2Rioli
CARL - Orange crush
COLL - Pie 4 Life
ESS - sydney_gws
FRE - Giant Strides
GEEL - Orange crush
GCS - Giant Strides
GWS - sydney_gws
HAW - Andre the Giant
MEL - PMBangers
NM - Andre the Giant
PORT - Giant Strides
RIC - Rioli2Rioli
STK - Giant Strides
SYD - GWS Goose
WB - GWS Goose
WCE - PMBangers

If you guys struggle to fill spots hit me up , happy to fill in
Thanks for the offer R2R. We seem to be struggling to get folk interested this year, whereas I would see this year's draft as quite interesting given the many permutations.

Do you have a preference for two teams to pick for?

REMINDER everyone else - let me know if you're interested. I'm thinking of starting it around 3/4 Nov.

Happy to take any team but im thinking probably Richmond as im a Tigers man and i could also take Brisbane & Adelaide as they are both pretty much just matching bids

I’ll do Richmond and any other team
Hey OC, would you be willing to let R2R take Richmond, which is relatively late in the draft anyway, and pick up a couple of teams with juicier selections - such as Saints, Geelong, Demons?

Cheers, standby while I negotiate.

Just for everyone's awareness, if no-one else comes on board, I'll pick up the remaining teams.

OK, thanks all. I've assigned teams to everyone who's expressed interest so far. If anyone else pops up wanting to join in, let me know, and I'll put you in against any team I have, or any secondary/tertiary teams for those posters above.

So, homework for everyone is to do some research on their assigned teams, and get a good sense of what draftees would suit them, and what their order of merit should be.

I'll aim to start our mock draft on Friday 4 November, so everyone's got a week!

OK, First Bounce will be 7pm on this Friday 4 November, so sydney_gws please be prepared to make your #1 call then. If you won't be around, please PM me prior what you're going to do (clearly, a bid is possible, or your choice) so I can start it on your behalf on time. Andre the Giant you should be ready to follow up soon thereafter as you have the next picks. Rioli2Rioli, clearly it's likely that Brisbane will be asked to match a bid within the first 3 picks, so please be watching for that and be ready to respond.

If you're bidding on a player, please tag in the poster who is selecting for the team with the player being bid on, so we don't have dead time. And when responding, please respond to the post, or otherwise tag in the original poster so again we don't end up with dead time.

I will play AFL House and do the points calculations & re-order the draft picks for any bid matches; but clearly if Brisbane match in the first 3 picks, there are a bunch of their picks in the 30s & 40s that will be removed ... but we can keep moving with the picks in the meantime until the mid-teens or early 20s when Jaspa Fletcher may attract a bid that is impacted by the Ashcroft bid/match.

Picks may be traded during the draft (but not before - we'll go with the actual pick order that exists on the Friday when I finalise the draft order and post it here), including future picks. But it has to be reasonable, so please tag me in for approval of the proposed trade. Posters may negotiate pick trades via PM with other posters in advance of the draft, but once we start, I need the pick trades to be clearly stated in this thread. So, please post an offer/ask in this thread, and the accepting poster do so in this thread, so I can re-order picks. Just allow me a little time to do so - I won't be sitting on BF all the time for the week or two afterwards, but I will pay reasonably close attention next weekend, but not necessarily every minute of each day!

One comment around the draft order. While I've said we'll only pick the first 3 rounds, I will publish what I'll call the "final 2022 draft order", in which I'll make a bit of a judgement call on how many total picks each club will have. Because it will be before final list submissions, there will be a bit of black magic between each club's current list and any late delistings they might do to have more spots opened up. Don't get too het up about that - we just need to be working off a clear list for the mock draft. As well, even during draft night, we'll need to hold clubs to the number of picks equalling the open list spots, so Brisbane won't be able to sell their several picks in the 30s for multiple later picks before the Ashcroft bid.

I will sticky the draft order and chosen draftees to the top of each page early on Friday evening once it's finalised, so it will be easy to follow who's been chosen.

Anyone with any questions, please ask in this thread at any time. Thanks all!

OK, here's what I think is a current list analysis for each club, in preparation for the draft. I expect some changes will be made (either rookie upgrades or further delistings), but we'll start with this.

As I said earlier, we'll only select out to 3 rounds, but have a full draft order so we know where things are for trades & draft order moving after bid matching. Some clubs will lose picks (e.g. GWS will lose pick #61 unless they delist someone in addition to Phil Davis), and hence some clubs with later picks will move forward. So, when I create the draft order to start with, it will differ from Lore's draft order in the list management thread. And then it will start changing with bid matching for academy & father-son picks.

Adelaide
Current senior list: 35 players
Current rookies: 4 Cat A (Butts, Murray, Parnell, Strachan) + 2 Cat B (Borlace, Newchurch)
Live picks: 3 (46, 56, 59) - or might upgrade a rookie. Butts & Strachan probably need to be promoted, but we'll stick with 3 picks.

Brisbane
Current senior list: 33 players
Current rookies: 3 Cat A (Lane, Mathieson, Michael) + 2 Cat B (Madden, McDowell-White) plus will redraft Cockatoo and Lester
Live picks: 5 (34, 35, 36, 38, 55) but probably end up with the minimum three, two of which will be matching bids on Ashcroft and Fletcher, and perhaps even re-draft one of Cockatoo or Lester.

Carlton
Current senior list: 32 players
Current rookies: 5 Cat A (Boyd, Cottrell, Durdin, Mirkov, O'Brien) + 2 Cat B (Akuei, Owies)
Live picks: 5 (10, 29, 49, 66, 86) - unlikely to use them all

Collingwood
Current senior list: 31 players
Current rookies: 6 Cat A (Begg, Carmichael, Dean, Ginnivan, Johnson, Noble) + 1 Cat B (Wilson)
Live picks: 5 (16, 25, 27, 51, 92) - unlikely to use the last one (Wilson may need to be upgraded).

Essendon
Current senior list: 30 players
Current rookies: 7 Cat A (Baldwin, D'Ambrosio, Durham, Martin, Menzie, Voss, Wanganeen) + 1 Cat B (McBride) - will have to promote at least one
Live picks: 5 (4, 22, 54, 62, 68)

Fremantle
Current senior list: 31 players
Current rookies: 5 Cat A (Banfield, Kuek, Schultz, Treacy, Worner) + 1 Cat B (Kelm)
Live picks: 6 (30, 44, 67, 76, 89, 107) - might only take three and promote a couple of rookies

Geelong
Current senior list: 34 players
Current rookies: 3 Cat A (Atkins, Close, Dempsey) + 1 Cat B (Mullin)
Live picks: 4 (7, 58, 64, 94) - might only take one or two and promote Atkins and/or Close

Gold Coast
Current senior list: 36 players
Current rookies: 6 Cat A (Brock, Casboult, Faulkhead, Moyle, Tsitas, Uwland) + 1 Cat B (Oea)
Live picks: 2 (5, 45) - also have 71 but will need to delist one more player (may well delist someone & upgrade someone else)

GWS
Current senior list: 31 players
Current rookies: 5 Cat A (Derksen, Hamilton, Lloyd, Peatling, Wehr) + 2 Cat B (Brown, Shaw) (Davis to be delisted & Brown to be upgraded)
Live picks: 6 (1, 15, 18, 19, 31, 57) but will only make 5 selections to allow Davis to be a rookie selection.

Hawthorn
Current senior list: 31 players [Added Fergus Greene]
Current rookies: 5 Cat A (Blanck, Bramble, Long, Newcombe, Ramsden) + 1 Cat B (O'Hara)
Live picks: 6 (6, 24, 41, 48, 50, 52, 65)

Melbourne
Current senior list: 33 players
Current rookies: 4 Cat A (Chandler, McVee, Smith, Turner) + 2 Cat B (Moniz-Wakefield, Farris-White)
Live picks: 5 (13, 37, 90, 108, 126) - probably just take two and promote Chandler

North Melbourne
Current senior list: 34 players
Current rookies: 2Cat A (Dawson, Edwards)
Live picks: 4 (2, 3, 23, 40) - also have 43 so will likely delist someone else from the main list to re-rookie (& use 43 on father-son Harvey)

Port Adelaide
Current senior list: 34 players [EDIT: added Francis Evans 3/11/22]
Current rookies: 4 Cat A (Dumont, McEntee, Pasini, Teakle) + will redraft Williams
Live picks: 5 (33, 60, 84, 102, 120) - probably just use three, and perhaps just 2 and a rookie upgrade

Richmond
Current senior list: 33 players
Current rookies: 4 Cat A (Bauer, Miller, Nyuon, Pickett) + 1 Cat B (Colina)
Live picks: 5 (53, 63, 88, 106, 124) - may only take two and promote Pickett

St Kilda
Current senior list: 32 players
Current rookies: 4 Cat A (Hayes, Heath, Sharman, Wood)
Live picks: 6 (9, 28, 32, 47, 85, 103) - probably take four

Sydney
Current senior list: 31 players
Current rookies: 5 Cat A (Fox, HHK, McAndrew, McLean, Wicks) + 1 Cat B (Sheather)
Live picks: 6 (14, 17, 42, 75, 93, 111) - might promote a couple of rookies

West Coast
Current senior list: 33 players
Current rookies: 2 Cat A (Culley, West)
Live picks: 5 (8, 12, 20, 26, 78) - might pass the last one.

Western Bulldogs
Current senior list: 31 players
Current rookies: 5 Cat A (McComb, McNeil, Scott, Smith, Sweet) + 2 Cat B (Khamis, Raak)
Live picks: 6 (11, 21, 39, 69, 87, 105) - probably take three and promote 2 rookies in Sweet and Khamis, leaving one rookie selection.

So, just a quick analysis on the cost to Brisbane of matching bids for Ashcroft at the first 3 picks:

#1 - cost is 2400 points - BN uses all 5 available picks (34, 35, 36, 38, 55) for 2238 points & carries a deficit of 162 points into 2023
#2 - cost is 2014 points - BN uses its first 4 picks totalling 2031 points, leaving 17 points residual (equates to downgrading #38 to pick #72)
#3 - cost is 1787 points - BN uses its first 4 picks totally 2031 points, leaving 244 points residual (equates to downgrading #38 to pick #52)

In the last 2 cases, the two middle picks go to the back of the draft.

Collingwood

Live picks: 5 (16, 25, 27, 51, 92) - unlikely to use the last one (Wilson may need to be upgraded).

From a Collingwood perspective:
- Noble needs to be upgraded as he's been on the rookie list for the maximum time = Pick 92.
- Murley delisted will be added to Cat A Rookie list if nobody takes him first.
- Wilson has 1 more year as Cat B I believe.
Therefore our live picks would be (16, 25, 27 and 51) prior to F&S/NGA/NA/Etc.

OK, approaching the start time for the GWS Board mock draft. I haven't seen any list changes today, so below is my assessment of where picks will be.

I'm going to make the following assumptions, and that affect the resulting draft order (below):
  • COLL - Noble upgraded, pick #92 removed
  • ESS - one of their A Cat rookies upgraded, limited to 5 picks, with #80 & later removed
  • FRE - one rookie upgraded, pick #107 removed
  • GEE - Atkins or Close upgraded, pick #94 removed
  • GCS - one player delisted but one upgraded, leaving just 2 ND selections & pick #71 removed
  • MEL - one rookie upgraded, pick #126 removed
  • NM - another listed player delisted (to be re-selected in the rookie draft), allowing pick #43 to be taken to the draft
  • RIC - Pickett upgraded, pick #124 removed
  • SYD - one rookie player upgraded, pick #111 removed
  • WB - one rookie upgraded, pick #105 removed
Clubs whose pick will be removed due to not having the live picks, either based on the earlier post assessing the number of live picks or the above assumptions, are crossed out below. In the next post, they will be removed, and other clubs moved up to create the starting draft order for our draft:
