You’d imagine he wants in desperately.

He’s not short of a $$$ so easy for him to check into the hotel at Olympic Park and immerse himself in Tom Wills.

He get covid and miss a week anyway so its hardly a big deal for another coach to sit in for a week. Every club is facing a similar issue at the minute.

I agree it’s highly likely that MM’s newborn or illness is likely to require him to miss one or more games over the remainder of the season.

It’s happening to every other club so we’re probably overdue.

In that scenario, you’d imagine Hird will step up and that would be a heck of an exciting fixture.

Wasn’t James Hird brought into the club to mentor the leaders? Lucky they’ve responded really, really well to him. To think things could have been even worse.

I think it's a better coaching panel than what we had. 2 Ex Premiership players with coaching experience. They don't need to be there full time, 2-3 days a week and game day is enough.

If that's the case then it's the ideal way to slash assistant coaching costs for next year and be able to afford Clarkson's salary and not blow the soft cap!

I think assistant's would take less to work with Clarko because of how many of his assistants go on to become senior coaches or senior assistants elsewhere. He's a kingmaker and there's a really good chance that you'll go on to get a better job elsewhere if you work with Clarko for a few years.

It’s good that we could get supports in and around MM so quickly.

Re 2023 and beyond, Hird should never be employed as a head coach before Clarkson. I don’t get the hype. He wasn’t a successful coach and oversaw something horrendous.

I’m starting to think that the Hird, MM, DS trio may not be the interim solution, but rather the ‘soft launch’ of the proposed 2023 Coaching line-up.

If our senior star players (who have individually underperformed in season 2022 to date, ex JK) demonstrate a significant lift in performance then that may give the Board the confidence to formalise it.

I suspect that’s the Club’s default plan unless something unexpected (ie, Clarko makes a killer pitch to the club) comes along.

In hindsight, it appears something (in addition to Jezza) has been broken or missing at the club from 2020 onwards.

You are correct that our senior players are massively underperforming, but I think Hird was brought in for 2022 to pre-position for LC’s departure - not to improve Toby or JK’s Captaincy for LC.

I never bought the official club management story that LC wanted and hired Hird.

Phil chooses his media words very carefully, and I suspect there is signal - not noise - in his choosing to to repeat the word ‘really’ three times in a row.

It also follows on from the recent TFG interview on Fox where he raves about Hird and complains about the lack of COLA for junior players and assistant coaches.

North players really wanted Rhyce Shaw too.
To be fair, the integrity of our leadership group and the way they have lead has been questionable.

I think players may be more open and honest with assistant coaches especially their position coach and not often is the assistant coach the one to be handing out big sprays to the group so it's a probably a different type of relationship which might explain that.

So one of the 3 structural problems embedded in this years poor on-field performance has been addressed.
The Head coach has gone.
Two remain.
The team isn't fit enough. Will the Strength & Conditioning head, (have a hazy recollection he was poached from Rugby League) also be axed?
& then there is Recruitment/ draft.
Adrian Caruso loves his big bodied mid-fielders; to the extent that Cognilio and Taranto have to be played out of position on flanks and have consequently lost impact on games. & Hopper will return second half of season, adding to the logjam.
Putting a long-term contracted millionaire and captain onto a half forward flank goes to the poor fit and balance of the team.
It just feels wrong. Cogs can't impact from there.

A cutting observation.

Fairly sure it will require this level of wisdom to turn the season around.
