Clarko's emphatic response to $1.6M North links

Alastair Clarkson has emphatically denied rumours suggesting he's asking teams for a $1.6 million salary to return to the coaches' box next season.
The 54-year-old hosted a function with AFL broadcaster Gerard Whateley on Friday afternoon, and Whateley said Clarkson "resents" recent reports surrounding his potential demands. "'Bulls--t'. That was Alastair Clarkson's reaction to what's in the public domain about $1.6 million to join North Melbourne," Whateley told AFL Nation.

"He's had an embryonic discussion with the Giants, he hasn't had any contact from North Melbourne." Whateley also revealed what Clarkson is said to be looking for at his next AFL home. "I think it's fair to interpret that he resents the assumptions being made about him," he said.

That will be up to the AFL Commission. That decision for either North or GWS will be determined by Clarkson.

If he decides to join either club you can expect them to stump up. They can’t have their baby becoming a basket case like you so they are happy if he goes to either.

Poor old spike… I’m not sure he’ll ever get a head coach position now.

The last month hasn't been great for Spike's coaching aspirations but at least Spike coaches with genuine care for the club, not just to get the HC position. He's been hard on the players w calling the passengers out but the fact he called for a change in the leadership group despite the big names (Our big 4) and those floated to leave the club (Hopper, Davis) really shows how he's not coddling the players to get the job. Hopefully the next coach realises the leadership potential of Pez and Slammer who bleed orange even if it comes at the expense of one of our bigger name players

I find Spike’s honesty really refreshing. These guys need a rocket under their arses, they are entitled, ahead of themselves and delusional.

Some home truths might give some of them an opportunity to reflect, work harder and maybe salvage a viable career.

When the new coach comes in he won’t give a s**t about what draft pick players were taken at. He will want to make his own mark and will clean out the deadwood.

Spike is trying to help these morons with some tough love and I admire him for that.

We need a coach who can restore the sense of purpose and direction we used to have.

Up until 2020, there was a sense of destiny around the club. We were expected to win a premiership. That was our story. COVID exposed all of the accumulated underlying divisions and blew that away.

With our current situation, if so many players have already checked out for the season, that tells me McVeigh isn't the person who can restore purpose and direction. We don't have a team at the moment. Yes, the list has problems, and when the season finishes there will be a clean-out, but our challenge is bigger than that.

The new coach must create, from scratch, a sense of purpose, direction and destiny. That is hard, but every successful coach does it.

If that person is an up-and-comer, rather than a big name, I'm inclined to give them an opportunity. As long as they have a plan
to create a team with purpose and direction.

Do they go a McRae type of coach, teacher of young players with plenty of experience? Is that more beneficial than a clarko? Not sure Al is that good with the new generation, seemed to trade out youth for experience in his last few years at the Hawks, with not so great results.

I'd be looking for a coaching group, inexperienced senior coach with lots of industry experience at a few clubs, with an ex senior coach as the senior assistant.

Do they go a McRae type of coach, teacher of young players with plenty of experience? Is that more beneficial than a clarko? Not sure Al is that good with the new generation, seemed to trade out youth for experience in his last few years at the Hawks, with not so great results.

I'd be looking for a coaching group, inexperienced senior coach with lots of industry experience at a few clubs, with an ex senior coach as the senior assistant.

You’re right, so long as all the other pieces are in place. Shepherd, Bartel, Matthews and McCartney are responsible for creating and maintaining a platform for the coach to succeed. Let’s see if they’re up to it. Recent history suggests they’re no chance. Will Dave’s boys club be broken up?
