Kingsley Appointed Head Coach

Adam Kingsley is the new head coach of the GIANTS.

The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.
 
Rumor here in Adelaide is that Nicks has had his final interview and is our preferred candidate. Wish they would announce it already then.

I must say the finals series hasn’t really changed my view of Leon.

He is still a coach who does a good job of coaching grit, and is poor tactically.

I thought the quality of footy through the year was not great. Lots of grunt and effort. Several turgid losses with no system or energy.

I thought the Brisbane finals win was undeserved. Brisbane we much better but set fire to their opportunities. If Brisbane didn’t choke then it’s the regulation 5-6 finish it looked like being all season.

The Collingwood finals win was great. I think it wouldn’t have happened without the slippery conditions as that turned it into a pack to pack game, whereas better weather would have allowed Collingwood to slice us up with their kicking game.

Then in the GF it was very clearly the 6th best team who had fluked their way to an undeserved GF vs the clear best team, in clear conditions which suited them perfectly.

I hope the players and coaches do not take from this season that they are just about there and need to do a little bit more of the same.

We were well off the best teams, deserved to finish 6th. Significant improvement will be needed to even make top 4 next year.

While I agree Leon isn't great tactically, no plan B.
The Grand Final loss was down to playing players at less than 40% because we had no one else to put out there.

A full strength (and fit) side and maybe things change.

Always thought Leon is a brilliant man manager but he is 1 dimensional tactically.

Contested possessions level at half time if I recall and yet the game was over.

That's a frank assessment and much different to telling the group; We nearly got there, a 5% improvement will do it.
I think the Bulldogs style '16 fairytale run was an overly optimistic model for a finals assault.
Next time, a home qualifying final, that is finishing 1 or 2, is the aim.
 
Disappointed, and resigned, at the loss of Nicks. Came across as a guy with high EQ, and good footy intelligence as well.
Frankly, who becomes the next assistant coach is more pressing than who else we draft besides Academy Green.
We're actually down 2 major positions_both Nicks and Joyce need replacement.
 
I reckon GWS are a good enough club to not let those departures really have too much, if any negative effect.

I thought you blokes deserved to be in the GF.

And while you think that significant changes are necessary I would just like to point to Richmond of 16/17.

We didn't change toooooooo much. I wouldn't have called it a significant change, though those within the club might feel it was a huge change. We got a couple players in and freed up the players to play a bit more on instincts.

I think GWS are in a better place to win a flag than the tigers were at the end of 16.

Just keep faith a little longer.
 
Great interview by Nicks on trade radio which focuses on what he learned at different clubs

He said his time at GWS taught him a lot about culture and that’s a significant thing that he will take forward to the crows. Changing the culture at Adelaide will be a significant challenge

Given Leon is good with regards to establishing relationships, any merit in trying to get Ross Lyons over to take Nicks' role? Thought he might be a good tactician. We have always been good offensively, but maybe Ross can put in place a team defence system that can hold up consistently

Ross’ problem is his tactics are archaic he still plays back half football. The modern game is built off forward half pressure and forward half turnovers- now Ross has a strong defensive reputation but his emphasis on defense meant that the dockers played the game in the wrong half.

We would be better served to try and poach a 2IC from one of the tigers assistants- they play a fantastic brand of forward half footy

You had the review end 2016. Traded out Deledio, traded in Prestia. Lost to injury / dropped Vickery and Griffith to go with a one tall structure. Dusty played forward instead of back.

Massive change wasn’t it?

Not a rebuild, but a significant change to how you played from one year to the next.

Something about that level is what I think GWS need to jump from 5th-6th up to premiers.

From memory there is some kind of review happening at GWS so I am hopeful.
 
Guess I'm wondering if the soft cap came into play when promoting Adam Schneider into senior coaching, and not replacing Matthew Nicks directly. Not enough money to coax an Adem Yze type out of Vic as direct replacement?

Do you think the timing hurt us? I too wanted an experienced replacement but this happened so late in the season I wonder if we had limited options?

Stability since there is also other football dept spots to fill. Also he may be considered a good coach. Rhyce Shaw was still coaching NEAFL in 2016 and within 3 years made a successful transition to head AFL coach. On top of that Nick's has I think 3 spots vacant on his Crows coaching team and it would seem likely guys that have worked with him that he rates will be getting new jobs.

If we are to truly compete with Richmond next year, we have to do something different than last. A number of teams held us goalless for long periods of matches.
I know there's been little dissection/ discussion of the GF, coz it hurts to think about, but I guess you could say, pressure caused turnovers.

There needs to be a quantum jump in the coaching. If we can't beat 'em, do we join 'em. Play a pressure game, adopt a different game style.
Or do we know how to beat the pressure (what BT would call the chaos) teams, with our own game style. WCE beat a Rance-less Richmond in the air with McGovern, Kennedy and the other bloke. Collingwood / Cox beat them that way too two years ago Prelim.

Since Lobb left, no-one has dominated in the air for the Giants.

In summary, I don't think an in-house promotion of coaching staff was good enough. We need new, inspired ways to get back to a GF and win it. But it appears we will try and do this without any new fresh thinking .

I think we did really well with that late in the year and in the first three finals, and even in the first quarter of the GF. I think we fell away from it because we tried to be too smart, instead of playing it really safe like we'd been doing there started to sneak in chips across the backline while not taking into account where Richmond players were (Tommo!) and as often happens once a team gets a bit of a run on our heads drop and you can see our running cease.
 
I agree that I wanted an external replacement to replace Nicks. However, I don't know how we can get to a grand final and STILL criticise the coaching. I mean if there is a significant drop off next year then I think it could be warranted but to suggest there needs to be a quantum jump in coaching is a bit much. Nobody was suggesting Bucks needed that when they made the GF last year so why are we different?

I do agree we need to look at tweaking (not changing) the game plan. We are an exceptional stoppage team and our scores from stoppages etc were a clear strength. The problem when matched up against Richmond was they play a forward half pressure game relying on turnovers which happen far more often in a game than stoppages/clearances. Much like West Coast did a couple of years ago, I think we need to focus on playing specialist forwards in that forward line rather than rotating mids through it like we have done. Personally I don't like Cogs playing forward for this reason (even though he has been competent there). Daniels has been great with his forward pressure and tackling but he lacks another consistent supporter... im hoping Hill and Langdon compete well to solidify this role in 2020. Our tall forward line can sometimes be a hinderence to this as well.

All in all, I think that forward half pressure is still what is missing.
