This is where Stevie J earns some of his keep. He is one guy in the group who knows intimately what it is like to be the hunted and deal with the weight of expectation. Hoping he is a calming influence and fosters the focus on staying grounded and true to the teams goals.

Steve Johnson a calming influence?

Don't think this has been posted previously - it's the best balanced article on the 2017 Giants I've seen to date. It analyses last season's stats (in brief), discusses the off season trading & drafting with due reference to the early normalisation of list size & cap. Good analysis of the strengths of the midfield & forward groups; great discussion about the backs (and gives great description of the value of Rory Lobb & Zac Williams :thumbsu: ). Also provides rationale discussion of the potential barriers to success. A few hyperboles but not excessive. Overall, a pretty good read IMHO.

A great read. The glaring ommision of Corr who I see as a stopper bemused me though.

True. I think the fact that his appearances in first grade have been a bit spasmodic so he's not seen as an experienced stopper might have contributed to that.

I'm curious as to how much Corr will be used in 2017. I think that he would have played that second KPD role last year had he not been injured; but with Tommo's emergence later last year has he taken Corr's place? But I'm not sure Tommo is a stopper - at least not in the classical sense - but that's also not how Leon plays the defensive unit. With Patfull's retirement his role is up for grabs. I don't think that Corr suits that role, but Tommo might and allow Corr back into the second KPD. Alternatively, Buntine or Griffen could do Patfull's role - although by all accounts Griffen is training pretty well this year, so he might spend more time in the middle. An interesting period coming up where we see in the intra-club and JLT Community series how the possibilities stack up.

Agreed I think Corr definitely had the inside running for that spit but his injury has changed the plan.
I sèe it as between Corr and Bunts. I still think there was something amiss with Bunts second half of last year. He's in our leadership group and has to be an attractive optionwith his ability to play short and tall in a zone defense, surely. Corrs interview does suggest he sees himself after Patful's role but I guess that's obvious.
o_OFollow that path in my head and I have Wilson playing NEAFL and that's just wrong.

I hope buntine takes patfulls spot. He is a great young leader and played some really good games last season before injury struck.

FB: Buntine -- Davis -- Haynes

HB: Shaw -- Tomlinson -- Williams/Wilson

Agree with you on the make up of the back 7 with one on the bench and with Williams ability to play in all 3 parts of the ground his versatility is important to allow other more specialised players and the 1st and second year players
in the best 22
I can see form in the pre season deciding between Corr/Haynes/Buntine and Tomlinson. Not that Haynes is not best 22 more if the MC see him as playing second KPD or having him more intercept and rebound. Out of the other 3 who would be most suited to that role?

Himmelburg?

Himmelburg?
Could be another option but i would have the others ahead based on last year and it will change after the preseason games
NEAFL KPD
Mohr Corr/Tomlinson Himmelburg/Jezza#2
NEAFL KPF
Flynn Himmelburg/Jezza#2
And with the 2 rucks Simpson and Downie it will be a tall lineup but it wouldn't surprise me to see the lineup with 1 of the rucks and a top up tall (Brander??? or ???) or Tiziani to be the third tall?

Fair enough.
It seemed to me Himmelburg was given a few games and he played really well, and was then sent back to the NEAFL to develop. He's very young and you'd reckon an off season in the gym will suit him. I think he fits Haines intercept role best, but I it requires intuitive positional play IMO. Not sure that can really be taught, but probably can be strengthened theough coaching.
Regardless of intent it will come down to Pre season form as you say.
Your talking my language with Tiziani and I will be watching closely his role in the NEAFL to get a clue about his future.

Yes it ill be interesting to see where players fit this coming season, I personally would like to see HH play forward as it is where i see a lack of depth options more so with Tomlinson playing down back
I feel Tiziani was picked up as he would be a bit more developed with an extra year in the system and after the loss of several players around that age

Himmelberg is an interesting case as he showed composure beyond his years in his games and will definitely be in the mix.

However this offseason will see us probably lose one of Tomlinson/himmelberg/corr depending on who is getting game time. I've already personally written off Finlayson as he just can't seem to get games despite NEAFL form which is unfortunate

I'd like it too, but I think there's a real possibility Griffen takes it opening up a mid spot instead

I'm thinking Griffin lives or dies in our mid rotation. I get it's dynamic and people change roles in game, but I didn't notice him playing back much last year? I have moved up to get a better persective this year.

Whats going on there? Fin just not popular?

I don't know if TOJ is the next Miles/Whiley/Townsend/Barrett or the next Sauce Phillips.

Kid has obvious talent and can handle back or forward, looks composed and a beautiful kicking action - but gets injured at seemingly just at the wrong time (he's also under suspension for the first couple of weeks after ironing out someone in the Granny). I really hope he gets a chance at some point this year because he really deserves it.

Anything is possible, but looking at team strengths and weaknesses I can see it happening, club bio is 12 months out of date but they label him a probable half back.
