The first piece of evidence that Thommo was a selfish footballer was his lack if defensive running and Bickley stating on AA that it was known and accepted that Thommo didn't work back. The second clue was when Thommo continually put himself ahead of the club by stating he wanted to go on the year after. Most, if not all, veterans do not do this. They almost always state that they're not sure it's a long season and they'll address it later after seeing how the body copes. Not Thommo, he was supremely confident last year that he was still a genuine best 22 player. But our club fosters this bullshit. How many captains of the last decade or 2 need to be forcibly removed from the role as VB was. Our club has sheltered and encouraged these attitudes but it's changing. Thommo failed to realise this. Thank fuq VB is gone and thank fuq Thommo has realised he's done as well. He will play SFA SANFL games. He doesn't have it in him. He is a selfish footballer, but that made him te champ that he was, but his time came 2 years ago we're miles better off without him.

There's nothing unarguable there Kane. Thommo has been enormous over his career but he has also been the only stoppage only rover over last 2-3 years. The competition moved on, but we couldn't because Thommo was he best at that finite role. But the role ceased to be relevant 2-3 years ago but we refused to move with the times.

It's no coincidence that we were 4 from 4, average margin of 70 points, when without Thommo during 15 & 16. In 2017 we're 3 and 0 without Thommo. Regardless of the actual results, our midfield looks decidedly better without a deicated player to slowly jog from one stoppage to the next.

We could pay him HALF of his previous salary and he'd still be well above the minimum.
If he's on half, which is entirely likely given he's due to spend most of his time if not all in the SANFL, then he would be WELL under the average wage.

It may not be minimum but it wouldn't be a lot more.

Whatever it is, it's a waste of money and a list spot

Great player but was done. Should have been chaired off after the Sydney final and recognised at our club champion event. Lap of honour before our Round 1 game this year. Has missed out on all those honours. Will feel very hollow if they try to do them 12 months late.

Yep, agreed. Thompson will be a cautionary tale for senior players across the league.

I don't think it impacts us much. Perhaps adds to our reputation for player support and team morale. Costs us some cash and a spot, both of which open up at the end of the year. I don't think it's anything to lose any sleep over.

That depends on what the players who went after we passed on our last pick turn out like.

Imagine for the sake of giving Thommo an extra year we missed out on a Charlie, Atkins, Laird or Hartigan?

Agreed - but we seem to have room on our list to have made other picks and didn't, so that says what we thought of the talent, independent of the Thompson decision.

However we went into the drafts with a set list size in mind based on on perceived AFL changes to the lists. That was Fagans response when explaining why we went in short.

So if we didn't have Thommo would we have gone in another number short or taken a punt on a player? That's the unknown but given our history of finding gems it would have been foolish not to take a punt in a strong draft.

I'm not sure this is now considered a strong draft.

Anyway - I was also surprised and disappointed we didn't use the full numbers on our list. Doesn't really make sense to me.

There's no such thing as money that you can waste in the salary cap. Every dollar is a dollar that could have been used front loading someone's contract to sign them to an extension, even if it doesnt pay for another free agent.

But if we saw a potential one of those there's nothing suggesting we wouldn't have taken them. They expected their talent order to run out with 2 free list spots, but because a player was still there we grabbed them. There's no reason to think we left one on the shelf. None of the players, or any others, you mentioned were just taken because we had a spot, they would all have made our list and been ranked. When the list runs out we stop selecting.

There is though. We went into the draft with a set list number and we stuck to it. It's only hypothetical that we would have picked up someone we liked.

Of all the years, this is the year we don't think there is any late talent? I don't buy it.

It probably doesn't Impact us much but I still don't like the Centrelink nature that may exist here.

I think this year is unique because we have two handy players who are category b rookies. If we want to promote one, or both, of them this year or the next, and draft some kids, then we need to have spots for them.

Of course we can delist players, but outside of Thommo and Shaw (maybe Gore and possibly Wigg) there probably are too many players we want to delist.
