There is though. We went into the draft with a set list number and we stuck to it. It's only hypothetical that we would have picked up someone we liked.

Of all the years, this is the year we don't think there is any late talent? I don't buy it.
I thought they were in record as planning to go 2 short on the list but Davis was still there do it turned out to be only one short. I don't think we stick to it at all.

Worth adding that if we'd selected anyone at all in the rookie draft with the extra spot we had available then there'd be a reasonable argument. No salary cap impact, SFA cashflow, nothing to lose by having a crack at someone you think might get there in the end. But we didn't.

I'm declaring this trade officially dead.

Gibbs will play out his days at Carlton as we will not come to an agreement on value.

His value diminishes by the week for us.

Carlton must surely be kicking themselves about not doing this deal.

It's early days but I think history will show Carlton as the absolute losers in this failed trade and Justin Reid to be a man of conviction and foresight.

They'll come to an agreement this year if he still wants to be here.

If you think of a fully fit midfield group of Sloane, Crouch x2, Hampton, Cameron, Douglas AND Gibbs it's pretty scary. Add in the early season form of Poholke, Greenwood and the potential shown by Gallucci then we are set for some time.

Their only way out is to play the mental health card which necessitates us being implied to be uncaring assholes who wouldn't pony up Carlton's correctly arrived at value. They can't back down from where they sunk their flagpole last year, they need to win this deal somehow. Lucky most of their supporters seem flat out drousional and can see wins just about anywhere. They'll laud being good guys over us for a while and revel in statements like shit cumture, shit club, uncaring, no player will ever want to go there if their mental health isn't ever going to be a consideration. It'll be painful, but amusing.

Whatever it is, it's a waste of money and a list spot

Great player but was done. Should have been chaired off after the Sydney final and recognised at our club champion event. Lap of honour before our Round 1 game this year. Has missed out on all those honours. Will feel very hollow if they try to do them 12 months late.
I agree. I am on the record last year, mid way though that Thommo is done. You only need to compare his first 5 games last year to his last 5 games. They are chalk and cheese.

Unfortunately, for players that play the type of football that Thompson has played throughout his career, the end comes suddenly and sneaks up on players. The body takes the pounding for years and just packs it in suddenly. Same thing happened to Roo. He started the year in great form and it looked like he hadn't missed a beat but half way through the year he was cooked. Roo saw the writing on the wall and called it a day. Thommo wanted to hang on.

The end for those tough, physical types can come suddenly sneaking up on everyone. The body just packs it in overnight so to speak.

I completely agree with everything you've written except i think Roo went on a year too long

Serious! You are the one that starts talking bullshit about Thommo being on big money and playing in SANFL and then when someone disputes it you ask for a source?!

**** me some people are just not all there!
To be fair, I think the "source" reared its head because a specific value (minimum) and club being on the record was posted whereas the reality is that there was much talk from commentators and his agent that he was being asked to take a significant pay cut. But nothing has ever been confirmed, but it seems clear he'd not be on near what he had been.

You could do the same thing with Mackay. He started 2016 well, and faded. He started 2017 well, with most people rating his R1 performance among his best ever games. It remains to be seen how long he can sustain his good form this year.

Thommo may have had a few good games at the start of 2017 as well. We'll never know, because injuries prevented him from even having a chance. Those injuries could also be a sign of his body giving up the ghost...

Plenty of other examples too. Nigel Smart, Stiffy Johncock, Porps, ...

I'd put money on Gibbs being at the Crows next year.
Plenty of water to still go under the bridge but at this stage I would agree with this.

If I was a betting man, I think it is highly likely that Gibbs will be a Crow next season at a significantly decreased trade value. He might actually end up being the icing on the cake in 2018. With another year under the belts of Atkins, Crouch brothers, Cameron, Hampton, Milera, Knight, Menzel etc. they should all be better in 2018 than they are this year. Add Gibbs to that mix and all of a sudden the midfield should no longer have question marks over it and the depth and quality is significantly better than it was in 2016.

Best not to post when you are really, really drunk.
Might be harsh but doesn't mean its not true.

Thommo has always been selfish.

He had shit tackling technique but when he was getting beaten on the day his high tackle count went through the roof. Is that ego or selfish ? dunno.
Putting his hand up to play when he was injured and couldn't raise a gallop hindering our team - is that ego or selfish?
Going on TV and radio constantly last season saying he want to play on putting public pressure on the club to gift him another year - ego or selfish?

But back on topic, Grundy please.

Thommo took a massive pay cut & not on the money Sauce is.

Playing sanfl coach.
Not too sure but I think they were trying to get Thommo on a dual type payment, ie paid as a development Coach and Player, do not know if the AFL sign off on it.
But yeah no where near the money Sauce is on.

Think we need to put 1 spot open on our list in perspective.
The AFL list will be changing this year ie list of 44, have heard that the min changes required will be 4 up from 3.(no official source so could be bunkum)
Have not heard if cat B rookies are separate, But the Current Cat B rookies cannot be resigned this year as cat B meaning Keath and Greenwood either join the main list or are delisted.
If that all correct. then the Crow who currently have 45 on their list will need to delist 5 players
If we used our last rookie spot that would be 6 players.
Looking at our list to date it a lot easier delisting 4 players than 5 or 6 so I can see why they planned to go into 2017 2 players short, however, Davis was still available so they swooped. And if there was another player they believe good enough they would have picked them as well.
So again if teams are required to turn over 4 players from a list of 44 we have 45, therefore, need to move on 5 players.

So who do we delist? Shaw and Thommo are no Brainers. Remember we need to include the rookie's in this count.

I don't think silvagnis ego will allow for a reasonable trade.

I think it's done.

It's over.

To be honest I haven't even considered Thompson as being an "out" this year.

Even when he has gotten over his injuries I think it is going to be difficult to justify him a spot in our midfield.

Thommo in for the last couple of rounds when we've sewn up top spot already and rest some players for finals. :thumbsu:

I think the only way for Carlton to save face is to force Gibbs to play out his contract.

They made the claim that they backed themselves in to bring Gibbs back into the fold at Carlton so if he turns around and still wants to leave at the end of this year then you have say that Carlton made a huge mistake by not working with Adelaide to come up with the best possible deal for him back in 2016.

Any extra player we selected as a rookie on top of our current list would get the chop. The list size reason has never stacked up in terms of filling our rookie list. The player we didn't get would be the first to go, the remaining challenge is not impacted.
