I think the only way for Carlton to save face is to force Gibbs to play out his contract.

They made the claim that they backed themselves in to bring Gibbs back into the fold at Carlton so if he turns around and still wants to leave at the end of this year then you have say that Carlton made a huge mistake by not working with Adelaide to come up with the best possible deal for him back in 2016.
I think that Carlton will want the cash, they have a record number of people out of contract this year.
12 months does a lot, they can decide to re orient there public stance to compassion, they can say that his value is different now and they can say that they needed him this year for their developing players.
Last year it was moving fast around them and there only option was to say no. They can lead it this time.

If Bryce still wants a move, he's a year older, one less on his contract his value will drop to a single 1st. We can give up pick 18 no worries.

You could do the same thing with Mackay. He started 2016 well, and faded. He started 2017 well, with most people rating his R1 performance among his best ever games. It remains to be seen how long he can sustain his good form this year.

Thommo may have had a few good games at the start of 2017 as well. We'll never know, because injuries prevented him from even having a chance. Those injuries could also be a sign of his body giving up the ghost...

Roo went on a year too long as well.

Plenty of other examples too. Nigel Smart, Stiffy Johncock, Porps, ...
AFC is accomodating if nothing else.

I'm declaring this trade officially dead.

Gibbs will play out his days at Carlton as we will not come to an agreement on value.

His value diminishes by the week for us.

Carlton must surely be kicking themselves about not doing this deal.

It's early days but I think history will show Carlton as the absolute losers in this failed trade and Justin Reid to be a man of conviction and foresight.
Good, I hope so.

Dustin, Rocky or Fyfe come on down.

Another stake in the hearts of Carlton fans. SOS's project on GWS garbage has failed.

Look at AFL article.

Think we need to put 1 spot open on our list in perspective.
The AFL list will be changing this year ie list of 44, have heard that the min changes required will be 4 up from 3.(no official source so could be bunkum)
Have not heard if cat B rookies are separate, But the Current Cat B rookies cannot be resigned this year as cat B meaning Keath and Greenwood either join the main list or are delisted.
If that all correct. then the Crow who currently have 45 on their list will need to delist 5 players
If we used our last rookie spot that would be 6 players.
Looking at our list to date it a lot easier delisting 4 players than 5 or 6 so I can see why they planned to go into 2017 2 players short, however, Davis was still available so they swooped. And if there was another player they believe good enough they would have picked them as well.
So again if teams are required to turn over 4 players from a list of 44 we have 45, therefore, need to move on 5 players.

So who do we delist? Shaw and Thommo are no Brainers. Remember we need to include the rookie's in this count.
The AFL won't shrink the lists, if anything they will increase their size since every side now has a reserves side. The minimum size for the new list will be the size of club with the biggest list. Gills management style is trying to make everyone happy and not wanting to make a hard call, the list size change will accommodate everyone.

They'll keep Charlie Curnow. Looks good in flashes already, could develop into a top notch prototypical big bodied midfielder. McKay could be anyone's guess. Could be good, could spend 6 years doing squat all getting chance after chance cause he's big.

Delist: Armfield, Jones, Lamb, Sumner, Thomas
Trade, Otherwise Delist: Boekhorst, Casboult, White, Jaksch
Trade, Otherwise Retain: Kreuzer, Rowe
Retain: Buckley, Curnow, Curnow, McKay, Phillips, Simpson, Wright

Not a lot of quality on that list. Plenty of guys with low or essentially no trade value

I think they they will come back with the spin similar to this:

We owed it to our supporters to give this a try as Bryce is a valued member of the CFC and we were not going to trade him unless we tried everything possible to make his life and that of his young family easier in Melbourne as a Carlton player. 12 months on and despite our best attempts the issues are still at hand and we feel that we need to do the right thing by Bryce and his family as well as CFC. As a result, we are willing to accommodate his request to return home. Bryce has been a great player for the CFC and we wish him and his family all the best at AFC. He will always remain part of the CFC family.

The end result will most likely be that Bryce Gibbs will be a Crow in 2018.

Did not say they were shrinking the list, It looks like the AFL are combining the Rookie and main list to = 44. But when you add the min turnover of 3 players (which could change to 4 depending on the CBA), it means Clubs are starting out needing to get their lists down to 41. when you include the rookie cat A players. This will mean the Crows need to look at moving min 4 players from the current list of 45, as I believe our we cannot retain Greenwood and Keath as Cat B rookies after 2 years. If the change the min turnover from 3 to 4 that changes to 5 players the Crows need to delist or Trade. But they will include the Rookies, So we have Shaw and Thommo so far, who next.

No, a contract pretty much say's we cannot delist him unless there is a breach of contract.
We can absolutely delist him while contracted, we just have to pay out whatever penalty is listed in the contract in order to do so (or the entire remaining value of the contract if no penalty is listed).
