Great for us .....not sure Gibbs Manager will agree to that reduction ? ......Gibbs manager will want his cake (forward payment) + eat it too (the original $650K per year)
That is a huge risk by a club then.

Is this example right:
  • Gibbs had $650k per year for 5 years ($3.25 million for the full contract)
  • Carlton pay extra in the first two years at say $900k ($1.8 million cf $1.3 million if paid equally)
  • The contract has 3 years and $1.45 million remaining on it. ($483k per year)
  • Gibbs breaks the contract and leaves for Adelaide and doesn't have to repay any of the $500k overpayment?
  • He can then renegotiate the remaining 3 years with Adelaide?
WTF?

One last thing before I leave your board. Seems from IM's that some of you don't want me here which I respect. Carlton are not going to to take less than Gibbs is worth because they do not need to trade him. Adelaide are not going to pay more than he is worth because they do not need to take him. The deal will get done, I understand early next week, and all of us will be a little bit disappointed but not very disappointed.
We've enjoyed your contributions .....unfortunately every board, including yours, has its extremists :thumbsu:;)

That seems to be the outcome we've been discussing ???

They'd probably just sign a contract that says their reserves match payments are identical to AFL match payments
Not sure .....but a Jake Lever / Wayne Milera though would be on match payments plus base salary .....if they get dropped, they get a much lower match payment

Lever would have had a great year financially .....and his contract next will be unconditional

No!

Do you understand the concept of contract payments?!
yes i do ......but the forward payment probably was not in the contract, but a voluntary payment? .....we don't know?

Your correct though, if the weighting of annual payments was contracted .....then no dispute, we benefit from that ....which may also explain some of Carltons angst

No again!

There is no such thing as a voluntary payment!

Front-loaded contracts are in writing & cash flowed accordingly.

Not sure why you are making a big incorrect deal about this when it won't have an impact on whether Gibbs joins afc.

Was speaking to someone involved ......they said 50 % of AFL Player contracts are unconditional (highly paid players) ....whilst the other 50% are on incentive contracts, which include match payments

Obviously Mackay is on the unconditional contract :D
I was arguing with someone about this. They were trying to tell us that players had to have a match payment component. The rules quoted just set out the minimum amount that a player earns, it didn't define the contract structure. As if Sloaney will be earning less next year because he twangs a hammy. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Theyd have to agree to trade and break his contract.. if the opposite happened and back ended it the the club tried to trade him he'd have to agree to it knowing he'd lose that money.

I was simply having a discussion ......why should you care ?

And just for your limited understanding contract variations are common, maybe not in your industry, but across many industries and in PM they're more than common .......are they verbal and not in writing? .....do you think i have L Plates on

Honestly some of your posts around contracts has been naive & incorrect.

Match payments are still mandatory as far as I'm aware
You're wrong about this. There is nothing in anything you've posted that states that a contract needs to have a match payment component. The rules set out the base salary and minimum match payments that need to be paid if on base. We can contract any player we like for a fixed amount provided it exceeds the minimum amounts in the players EBA.

Been doing them twice as long as you Kane mate .....and a lot larger

I was having a discussion .....if you care to read, i was mostly asking questions .....i wasn't coming from a position of knowing how the AFL contracts worked ......but then neither do you, so get of your high horse
